Functions Domain, Range

Functions

Definition: DOMAIN, RANGE

A function is a relationship between two variables such that to
each value of the independent variable, there corresponds exactly one
value of the dependent variable.

The domain of the function is the set of all values of the

independent variable for which the function is defined.

Functions

Definition: DOMAIN, RANGE

A function is a relationship between two variables such that to
each value of the independent variable, there corresponds exactly one
value of the dependent variable.

The domain of the function is the set of all values of the

independent variable for which the function is defined. The range of
the function is the set of all values taken on by the dependent

If the range of f consists of all of Y , then the function is said to

Function Evaluation

Function Evaluation

The function notation f (x) = 1x 3

defined the dependent
variable as f (x) which also indicates that x is the independent
variable and the function itself is called f .

Function Evaluation

Function Evaluation

The function notation f (x) = 1x 3

defined the dependent
variable as f (x) which also indicates that x is the independent
variable and the function itself is called f .

The symbol f (x) is read as f of x thus, the notation f (3) is

the same as saying what is the value of y when x has a value of 3?

IMPORTANT NOTE

NOTE
Although f (x) is generally used as a convenient function name
and x as the independent variable, other equations using different
variables like f (g) = 3g 2 4g + 2 and f (m) = 3m2 4m + 2 define
the same function as f (x) = 3x2 4x + 2.
