1. Introduction
Proposed ROB at km 24+468, along Madurai Ramanathpuram (NH-49) in the state of Tamil Nadu. Steel-
Concrete composite girder superstructure system is proposed for the track span . This report details the
calculation of bearing loads for 38.973 skew span as per IRC codal provisions.

2. General Arrangement
The ROB consists of 3 structural spans and RE wall embankments for the approaches. Central track span is of
38.973m length (skew), Madurai side approach span is of 38.973 m length (skew) and Ramanathpuram side
approach span is of 38.973 length (skew). The superstructures are having a skew of 620 29' 33" with respect to
centre line of existing railway track. The vertical profile of the ROB is finalised based on the minimum vertical
clearance given by Railways, (6.525m from Rail top to deck bottom) in the approved GAD. Overall
superstructure width is 12.0m, which comprise 0.50m wide crash barrier on both sides and 1.5m wide footpath
+ 0.25m wide handrail at the outer end with 9.25m wide carriageway in between.

Simply supported pre-fabricated steel girders + cast-in-situ deck slab superstructure is proposed. Each
carriageway is formed with separate decks of 12.00m width using 5 girders. Superstructures are proposed to
rest on POT-PTFE bearings over RCC Trestle piers/Abutments at both ends resting on pile foundations.
Single unit strip seal expansion joint is proposed at abutment location. Bituminous wearing coat of 75mm thick
is proposed on the bridge.

3. Analysis and Design Methodology


Bearing loads are calculated for all vertical and horizontal loads and its various possible combinations. As
mentioned in the introduction, the seismic and wind force on the bearing is calculated based on the latest
amendment of the clauses issued by IRC.

6.0 Calculation of wind force - Loaded case


Wind force on the exposed face of superstructure is worked based on the clause on wind as per IRC:6-
2014. Basic wind speed is restricted to 36m/s, as for above speeds, it is considered that, deck is carrying
no live load on top of it.
Basic wind speed of Cuddalore, (Appendix A, IS:875 - Part-3 :1987) = 36 m/s
