Baby Dumping

Baby dumping is leaving an infant in a public place or private setting for an extended

period of time with intends to dispose the child. Baby dumping is a social crisis and has

chronic increase as many cases are occurring in Malaysian society, the baby dumping issue

arise when the women had her unplanned pregnancy and been pressured by the question

about the status of the child, even worse that mens irresponsibility also contribute to this

social problems. Statistics from the Welfare department found that in year 2010, from

January to April, 111 young girls ware pregnant and statistic from Police Department they

have discovered more than 66 abandoned infants, most of them dead by the time they were

found tragically buried, dumped in dumpsters or wrapped in plastics bags and even thrown

into rivers or drains. This problem happens due to lacks of education, family problems and

the influence of media and friends.

Teenagers nowadays is lack of knowledge, their prefer to know about gossips, artist,

entertainment and ect. This happen because the entertainment information is easy to get and

the price of magazine is also not expensive then education books. The causes of teenage

pregnancy, is lack of sex education from parents, schools or otherwise. According issue on

baby dumping (n.d) the teenage lack information about process of birth control and how to

dealing with their partners who always keep pressuring them to having a sex before married.

The women/ girls have to be brave and exercise their right contraception how to say NO

and must not be fooled by their couples. If they having an intimate relationship and wearing

protections, the chances of pregnancy are still there, with sex education this can help and

avoid them from commit the intimate relation. In Muslim culture, most of Muslim parents do

not or discuss about sex education with their children because of cultural upbringing (Shahid,

2006). Parents put all responsibility to Islamic school and public school to give education

about sex to their children, but at the school they do not learn about sex education overall, the
school teacher, they only teach about the basic knowledge. Muslim parents have to be

opening minded about sex education because Muslim lifestyles are totally different with Non

Muslim in their value system and way of life. Based on, Loh, 2010 stated most of the cases of

baby dumping happed due to not alert about baby hatch. A baby hatch is a place where

mother who are unable, or unwilling, to take care of their babies of their babies can leave

them in safe environment where they will be cared for. Many abandoned babies die from

exposure to the elements. Teenage should aware about baby hatch and information

surrounding because it will assist then to solve the problems in a right way.

Another factor that can bring to this problem is a constitution of the family is having

problems with each others. Zarina, (2010) said, if the family institution are not stable the

parents dont pay so much attention on their teenage/ children behaviour. This will be an

advantage to the children to do what they want because their parents are not giving an

attention and caring to them, they also prefer to solve their own problems by themselves. The

problems become more seriously when parents are divorce and their children tent to seek

other attentions. This will give an impact to the children then it will bring to the social

problems, without a proper attention that as a parent should give to their children. Then when

their daughter gets pregnant, they will shame about the baby status, Furthermore they was

fearing the society perceptive and Malaysian society are not yet to be open-minded about

pregnant before marriage. issue on baby dumping (n.d). The society have a bad thought and

perception towards the pregnant women, this will make them feel depress, lost of confident to

facing the worlds in the future and they decide to dump the baby. The family will get angry

and started to blame the world and other people when know about unexpected pregnancies.

The family will throw their daughter away instead giving them the moral support, and the

mother (pregnant woman) has to dealing with a mental pressure from their family. This will
influence the mother mind to make a silly/ stupid decision by dump the baby because they

dont get support from their family.

Based on, (Shahanaaz, 2010) this social problems come from the influence of mass

media and social friends. Mass media like television, magazine, games, comic and internet

access are the one of most influence thing that can bring to this social problem. This happen

due to lack of monitoring from the parents, example, like internet access the children can

access without no boundary at all they maybe surf the porn website without parents

permission, sometimes they also can access through mobile phones. Parents should monitor

they children activity, they can make limitation to internet access and should not trust their

children 100 percent. Other reason about this problem is the influenced from bad lifestyle of

the socialize friends between the teenagers. They do not put limit between boys and girls.

New Year`s Celebration, Velentine`s Day celebration and Merdeka Countdown is also as

possible causes of baby dumping because these events allowed free mixing between the

sexes. Moreover the teenagers like to spend the time with their friends and enjoy with

immoral activities such as liar party, drug, alcohol and ecstasy. The fashions nowadays also

give reason to this problem because teenagers like to wearing sexy clothes when go out.

In conclusion, the baby dumping issues is already a national issue to our country and

almost every day we will read or see this news in newspapers. Baby dumping may be

classified as attempted murder or murder. Parents, society, government and media must play

their roles and support each other to control these problems, and they must try to find the best

solution to solve this problem from become more seriously year to year. The youngsters

should be able to think wisely and be more matured in making decision because they are

assets for future government. For Muslim teenagers, they responsible to follow what have

stated in Al-Quran as they role and guide on the life.
