The Importance of Communion.
And they continued steadfastly in the apostle's
doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of
bread, and in prayers (Acts 2:42). A very literal
translation of 42b is: in the breaking of the bread.
The inclusion of the definite article indicates
that this bread was not the ordinary bread of
mealtimes, such as we see in Acts 2:46 where
bread in that verse is not preceded by the
article. Communion was a vital part of the life
of every Christian in Jerusalem. They had
communion with the Lord through the study of
the apostle's doctrine, and they had communion
with the Lord in gathering around the
Communion Table.
Less than two months had passed since the first
celebration of the Supper on the night before
Jesus was crucified, no doubt the memory of
that evening was still vivid and they wanted to
hold onto to it as long as possible. It was also a
reminder, not only of what Jesus had
accomplished for them in His death and
resurrection, but also of His promise to return.
Given these things, they joyfully obeyed the
Lord's command to observe communion
regularly. The celebration of the communion
meal was essential to the Christians of the early
church because it bound them to the Lord Jesus
Christ as nothing else could. This is why it is
still essential for Christians today.
The Lord's Supper keeps His substitutionary
atonement fresh in our memory. When Jesus
instituted this memorial celebration He did so
by recalling the events of the original Passover
when the angel of death passed over all those
who were covered by the blood of the sacrifice.
Christians, likewise, are covered by the blood
of the perfect, once for all sacrifice, and as we
participate in the Supper we are reminded

afresh of just how great a price has been paid
for our salvation. Because we still sin and need
to confess our sins Communion reminds us, in
a way that nothing else does, that we are
forgiven. It reminds us of our dependence on
Christ, of His gracious and merciful love for His
people, and of His promised return.
In partaking of the bread and the cup the
believer and the Lord are united in what is a
Holy Communion. It is no ordinary meal. It is to
be attended with a sense of awe and humility
and reverence. It must not be treated lightly or
shabbily - remember Pauls rebuke to the
careless Corinthians (1 Cor. 11:29)! We cannot
imagine a member of that first church in
Jerusalem ever treating the Lords Table with
contempt - preferring to go to the beach, or
sleeping in late rather than gathering with the
saints to celebrate together -and with the Lord.
They would, no doubt, have set aside many
other things in order to partake of the Holy
Meal.
The Lords own words in Luke 22:15 ought to
be the prototype of how every Christian should
consider the communion table: I have eagerly
desired to eat this Passover with you. The Lord
eagerly desires to have intimate communion
and fellowship with His people. A good thing
to ask is: Do we return the feelings He has for
us?

Are you God's Wife?
An eye witness account from New York City , on a
cold day in December, some years ago: A little
boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a
shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering
through the window, and shivering with cold.
A lady approached the young boy and said, 'My,
but you're in such deep thought staring in that
window!'
'I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,' was
the boy's reply.
The lady took him by the hand, went into the
store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs
of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could
give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly
brought them to her.
She took the little fellow to the back part of the
store and, removing her gloves, knelt down,
washed his little feet, and dried them with the
towel.
By this time, the clerk had returned with the
socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she
purchased him a pair of shoes.
She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave
them to him. She patted him on the head and said,
'No doubt, you will be more comfortable now.'
As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her
by the hand, and looking up into her face, with
tears in his eyes, asked her.
'Are you God's wife?'

Diane Muenzenberger (teacher at Faith Academy
in the Philippines with WorldVenture) writes:
The school year has almost finished. Just a few
weeks and off to break we go. This has probably
been the busiest school year I have had since
coming to Faith Academy 12 years ago. Yet, it has
been the most fulfilling and rewarding. God has
allowed me to be part of many amazing things
this year and I would not change one thing about
this busy school year.
I can say that I have taught all but 6 of our 112
Middle School students this year. And I think
that is pretty cool. I have enjoyed my 6th graders
(a first). They bring a different kind of energy and
excitement to the classroom.

In September, I took on a new role for our
Outdoor Education program, ministry
coordinator, coordinating a ministry involving
200+ people from 3 different schools and 200+
people on 2 ministry sites that were 3 hours away
from where I live.
This was probably the most rewarding job that
God allowed me to be a part of this school year. It
was amazing to see how He put all the pieces
together.
We were able to go back to a school that God used
us to replace a roof on a building and go to a
needy village school that God is continuing to use
Faith Academy to bless. It was at that village that
we were able to take 200+ shoes and raincoats to
the village children.
In December, I was honored for 10 years at Faith
Academy. (I am actually finishing my 12th year
but I was on home assignment during year 10.)
During, second semester one of my 7th grade
students came up and said to me, Miss M, before
this school year I really did not like Social Studies.
It was hard for me and I never really understood
anything so I did not like it. But this year I am
doing so much better and I think it is because of
you. You make things so easy to understand. You
make class fun. I like Social Studies now.
She goes on to say that she is presently under
supported by $410 a month. Pray for her in this
matter. She may need to come home a year
earlier than planned to raise support.
She is undergoing a major tooth repair which cost
half of one month's salary. Pray for her dental
work as its only half done.

The Sovereignty of God and Prayer

I am often asked, "If you believe God works all
things according to the counsel of his will
(Ephesians 1:11) and that his knowledge of all
things past, present, and future is infallible, then
what is the point of praying that anything
happen?" Usually this question is asked in
relation to human decision: "If God has
predestined some to be his sons and chosen them
before the foundation of the world (Ephesians
1:4,5), then what's the point in praying for
anyone's conversion?"
The implicit argument here is that if prayer is to
be possible at all man must have the power of
self-determination. That is, all man's decisions
must ultimately belong to himself, not God. For
otherwise he is determined by God and all his
decisions are really fixed in God's eternal counsel.
Let's examine the reasonableness of this
argument by reflecting on the example cited
above.
1. "Why pray for anyone's conversion if God has
chosen before the foundation of the world who
will be his sons?" A person in need of conversion
is "dead in trespasses and sins" (Ephesians 2:1);
he is "enslaved to sin" (Romans 6:17; John 8:34);
"the god of this world has blinded his mind that
he might not see the light of the gospel of the
glory of Christ" (II Corinthians. 4:4); his heart is
hardened against God (Ephesians 4:18) so that he
is hostile to God and in rebellion against God's
will (Romans 8:7).
Now I would like to turn the question back to my
questioner: If you insist that this man must have
the power of ultimate self-determination, what is
the point of praying for him? What do you want
God to do for Him? You can't ask that God
overcome the man's rebellion, for rebellion is
precisely what the man is now choosing, so that
would mean God overcame his choice and took
away his power of self-determination. But how
can God save this man unless he act so as to
change the man's heart from hard hostility to
tender trust?
Will you pray that God enlighten his mind so that
he truly see the beauty of Christ and believe? If
you pray this, you are in effect asking God no
longer to leave the determination of the man's
will in his own power. You are asking God to do
something within the man's mind (or heart) so
that he will surely see and believe. That is, you
are conceding that the ultimate determination of
the man's decision to trust Christ is God's, not
merely his.
What I am saying is that it is not the doctrine of

God's sovereignty which thwarts prayer for the
conversion of sinners. On the contrary, it is the
unbiblical notion of self-determination which
would consistently put an end to all prayers for
the lost. Prayer is a request that God do
something. But the only thing God can do to save
a lost sinner is to overcome his resistance to God.
If you insist that he retain his self-determination,
then you are insisting that he remain without
Christ. For "no one can come to Christ unless it is
given him from the Father" (John 6:65,44).
Only the person who rejects human self-
determination can consistently pray for God to
save the lost. My prayer for unbelievers is that
God will do for them what He did for Lydia: He
opened her heart so that she gave heed to what
Paul said (Acts 16:14). I will pray that God, who
once said, "Let there be light!", will by that same
creative power "shine in their hearts to give the
light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the
face of Christ" (II Corinthians 4:6). I will pray that
He will "take out their heart of stone and give
them a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26). I will pray
that they be born not of the will of the flesh nor of
the will of man but of God (John 1:13). And with
all my praying I will try to "be kind and to teach
and correct with gentleness and patience, if
perhaps God may grant them repentance and
freedom from Satan's snare" (II Timothy 2:24-
26).
In short, I do not ask God to sit back and wait for
my neighbor to decide to change. I do not suggest
to God that He keep his distance lest his beauty
become irresistible and violate my neighbor's
power of self-determination. No! I pray that he
ravish my unbelieving neighbor with his beauty,
that he unshackle the enslaved will, that he make
the dead alive and that he suffer no resistance to
stop him lest my neighbor perish.
2. If someone now says, "O.K., granted that a
person's conversion is ultimately determined by
God' I still don't see the point of your prayer. If
God chose before the foundation of the world
who would be converted, what function does
your prayer have?" My answer is that it has a
function like that of preaching: How shall the lost
believe in whom they have not heard, and how
shall they hear without a preacher, and how shall
they preach unless they are sent (Romans
10:14f.)? Belief in Christ is a gift of God (John
6:65; II Timothy 2:25; Ephesians 2:8), but God
has ordained that the means by which men
believe on Jesus is through the preaching of men.
It is simply naive to say that if no one spread the
gospel all those predestined to be sons of God
(Ephesians 1:5) would be converted anyway. The
reason this is naive is because it overlooks the
fact that the preaching of the gospel is just as

predestined as is the believing of the gospel: Paul
was set apart for his preaching ministry before he
was born (Galatians 1:15), as was Jeremiah
(Jeremiah 1:5). Therefore, to ask, "If we don't
evangelize, will the elect be saved?" is like asking,
"If there is no predestination, will the predestined
be saved?" God knows those who are his and he
will raise up messengers to win them. If someone
refuses to be a part of that plan, because he
dislikes the idea of being tampered with before
he was born, then he will be the loser, not God
and not the elect. "You will certainly carry out
God's purpose however you act but it makes a
difference to you whether you serve like Judas or
like John." (Problem of Pain chapter 7, Anthology,
p 910, cf. p 80)
Prayer is like preaching in that it is a human act
also. It is a human act that God has ordained and
which he delights in because it reflects the
dependence of his creatures upon Him. He has
promised to respond to prayer, and his response
is just as contingent upon our prayer as our
prayer is in accordance with his will. "And this is
the confidence which we have before Him, that if
we ask anything according to His will, He hears
us" (I John 5:14). When we don't know how to
pray according to God's will but desire it
earnestly, "the Spirit of God intercedes for us
according to the will of God" (Romans 8:27).
In other words, just as God will see to it that His
Word is proclaimed as a means to saving the
elect, so He will see to it that all those prayers are
prayed which He has promised to respond to. I
think Paul's words in Romans 15:18 would apply
equally well to his preaching and his praying
ministry: "I will not presume to speak of anything
except what Christ has accomplished through me,
resulting in the obedience of the Gentiles." Even
our prayers are a gift from the one who "works in
us that which is pleasing in his sight" (Hebrews
13:21). Oh, how grateful we should be that He has
chosen us to be employed in this high service!
How eager we should be to spend much time in
prayer!

Steve's Letter: Make Sure You Get Loved!
Irving Kristol, an early leader of the neoconservative
movement, once said that you should remember two
basic facts about politicsthere are other people and
they disagree with you.
As you know, my debate with Shane Claiborne and my
reading of Rob Bell's book on hell (and the angry
response to that book) prompted me to create a series
of sermons: Why Can't We All Get Along?, Why Can't
We All Agree? and Why Can't We Sing the Same Songs?
The addendum to all three questions is without
losing our convictions.

I'm working on the second sermon. As always, I'm
inflicting on you (both this month and the next) some
of my thoughts about that subjectthat may or may
not make it into the sermon.
In the current issue of First Things magazine, the
editor, R.R. Reno, wrote a fairly negative piece on his
encounter with some liberal political types. He
basically believes that political liberals have lost their
ability to govern. He wrote, liberals "lack the capacity
for the generous appreciation of other points of view
needed in a pluralistic society. That capacity is more
likely to be found today among conservatives,
particularly religious conservatives." He said that
while the meeting he attended was one of good will,
those in attendance "could not get their minds around
the notion that a reasonable, morally serious person"
could hold a view different from their own.
While that may be true, I don't think Reno runs in the
same "religious conservative" circles I do. Just a
cursory reading of the various Internet blogs on Rob
Bell's book should disabuse anybody of the opinion
that "conservatives" have a "generous appreciation" of
other points of view. Not only that, Reno should read
some of the letters I receive on a regular basis.
A while back, I told you that I was one of the
contributors to the Festschrift in honor of my friend
and colleague, John Frame, Speaking the Truth in Love:
The Theology of John M. Frame (published by P&R).
(For those of you who are cretins and not as
sophisticated as I am, a Festschrift is a book to honor
someone written by friends, colleagues and students.
Okay, okayI didn't know either. When the publisher
asked me to do it, I agreed without having the foggiest
idea what they were asking me to do. That's a
dangerous practice. And besides, it sounded kind of
like a disease. I had to go back to my study and look it
up. And if you say I told you that, I'll say you lied.)
They asked me to write the chapter, "John Frame: The
Closet Radical." In researching that chapter, I read
piles of critical material on John Frame and his
theology. I was shocked at the vitriol directed at this
good and gentle man. It wasn't just disagreement. It
was so angry and hateful I thought it was written by
pagans. They didn't want to debate; they just wanted
John to "get the fever and die."
So Reno may be wrong in his assessment of
conservative religious folks. While we have some good
parts, we can be as mean as any liberal. And just so
you know, I'm not just talking about them. I'm talking
about me. I'm probably the most opinionated friend
you've got and, as you know, I also have a mean
streak. My initial answer to the question of why we
can't all agree is simply that I'm right and those who
disagree are wrong. And given enough time, "I'll show
you whyunless, of course, you happen to be so
obtuse that you can't see truth when it's in front of
your nose."

One more quote from Reno:
"My convictions won't let me remain at a distance
It's the nature of robust religious and moral
convictions to motivate us to plant our flags in order
to claim territory. But to plant my flag I must come
ashore. I must engage my fellow human beings face-
to-face, for they are also trying to plant their flags. It's
a fraught encounter, of course, and a dangerous one,
as history teaches us. But it's also one that takes
others with the utmost seriousness."
I move the previous question: Why can't we all agree?
I don't know. Or at least, I don't know for sure.
I do know that it isn't a new phenomenon. In Acts 15,
Luke references a disagreement between Paul and
Barnabas over John Mark. Luke says, "And there arose
a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from
each other" (v. 39).
Let's trace that issue to see if there is some biblical
insight into the question of why we can't agree. This
examination will take more time than I have here, so
I'll have to continue with it next month.
The first thing immediately apparent is that in their
disagreement, Paul and Barnabas were family. They
worshiped the same God, were forgiven because of
the same sacrifice of Christ, and worked for and cared
deeply about the same cause. They weren't
disagreeing over whether to have waffles or pancakes
for breakfast, or over the appropriate dress for the
Jerusalem conference they were attending. They were
disagreeing over important convictions to both of
them.
And therein is the first reason we can't all agree. It's
because we care.
My friend, John Frost, is one of the reasons for the
success of the You Think About That spots airing on
contemporary Christian music stations around the
country. John said to me the other day that he finally
had me figured out. "You don't care," he said, grinning.
"You just don't care."
He's rightor at least partially right.
As I get older, a good number of things just don't
bother me as much as they used to. I don't care much
what people think about me and certainly don't care if
people think I'm right. I've been right and I've been
wrong...and I'm not even sure how right or wrong I've
been. (I sometimes say at the end of sermons, "Fifty
percent of what I just taught you is wrong. The
problem is that I don't know which fifty percent, so
you're going to have to get out your Bible and check
for yourself." That drives people nuts.)
I don't care much that people think I'm good either.
Nobody has ever been saved because I managed to be
good, pure and obedient. In fact, just the opposite.
People have come to see that if Jesus loves me (and he

does), he can love anybody. So I've quit pretending to
be better than I am. Insofar as I'm able to pull that off,
I've discovered that people are drawn to Christ
because nobody loves and forgives them the way he
does.
And I don't care much about people I don't know. I
hardly ever lose sleep over Casey and Caylee, over
appeals from organizations I've never heard of to help
people I don't know, or over whose secrets are being
shared on WikiLeaks. I don't give a rip about Lady
Gaga or Britney Spears, and don't care how Amy
Winehouse died.
So I don't care. Because I don't care, I'm not willing to
fight and die on those hills. It just doesn't matter to
me.
But along with the not caring part, I've found that
there are some things about which I passionately care.
That includes (and this list isn't exhaustive) my
family, my friends who are lost and my friends who
are saved, my church, my country and its direction,
Key Life, the seminary where I teach and you. I really
do careand care deeplyabout the eternal verities
of the Christian faith. I would die for the truth of the
Bible and the truth, Jesus Christ. Give me a sword and
I'll stand for the "faith once delivered" and the
precious Christian heritage that God has graciously
given me.
And therein is the problem. The only places where one
is willing to fight are the places where one cares. And
the more one cares, the more one is willing to fight
and die.
Next month, I'll share some other biblical reasons we
don't agree; but for this month, let me offer a tentative
solution: When you get saved, make sure you get
loved too. If you get saved but leave before you get
loved, you'll become a serial killer. And frankly, we
already have enough serial killers in the church.
Please note that I'm not suggesting we should give up
our convictions or that love will sand down those
convictions. In fact, when one is loved deeply,
unconditionally and fully, it makes one dangerous.
Because I'm loved and know it, I'm far more willing to
speak truth to whoever will listen and not shilly-
shally. It's one of the reasons I get into so much
trouble.
I am saying, however, that because I'm fairly secure in
my convictions (people who aren't secure shout a lot
and demean others who don't share those
convictions) and because, in my finer moments, I
know I'm loved, I can tell people that they're going to
hell (or even tell them to go there) and sometimes
they'll even look forward to the trip.

stones for the altar in Exodus 20:25 said this: "Many

as to the doctrines which they believe. There is among
Christians far too much inclination to square and
reconcile the truths of revelation; this is a form of
irreverence and unbelief. Let us strive against it, and
receive truth as we find it...rejoicing that the doctrines
of the Word are unhewn stones, and so are all the
more fit to build an altar for the Lord."
Good point, that!

God: because many false prophets are gone out into
