Lougheed Lesson Plan

Latin Verb Lesson

Lesson Date: October 29, 2015 (45-minute period)
Lesson Topic: the irregular verb malo to prefer

Objectives:
SWBAT recognize and conjugate all forms of the verb malo.
SWBAT compose sentences using malo with infinitives and direct objects.

Materials: malo activity handout & worksheet, whiteboard markers, two large whiteboards

Time Activity Notes/directives
5 min Warm Up Each student finds a spot at the whiteboard and conjugates
the present active indicative of volo (to want) and nolo (to
not want) from memory.

10 min Lecture & Introduce all forms of the related verb malo (to prefer).
Discussion Encourage students to make educated guesses (using their
knowledge of volo and nolo) whenever possible. Discuss
which forms of malo are irregular and which are regular.

15 min Activity Students are given a handout of options (tea or coffee,
beach or city, to run or to swim, etc.) in Latin. They must
walk around the room and ask different students in Latin
what they prefer (using the verb malo). They must find
fellow students with similar or different preferences and
write Latin sentences about who prefers what. Worksheets
are collected for an in-class assignment grade.

13 min Game Students play the Columns game with the verb malo. The
class is divided into two teams, each at one of the large
whiteboards in the classroom. Each student has a
whiteboard marker, and the six Latin verb tenses are
written on the board, heading a column where students will
eventually write the entire verb conjugation.

Each student is stationed under a tense. When the teacher
gives the signal, each student writes the first form under
their tense, and then moves to the right to write the second
form under the next tense, and so on until all the
conjugations are complete.

The team that finishes first gets three points. However,
when both teams are done, each team crosses over to the
other teams whiteboards and circles errors. One point is
deducted for each error (the teacher has the final say on
errors).

Time permitting, the classes reviews common errors made
in the conjugations.

2 min Exit Ticket Students quiz themselves by conjugating malo in the
present active indicative from memory.

Homework: Memorize all forms of malo (if you havent already!) and be prepared for a pop quiz
tomorrow.
