Sensory

Sensitivity and the Built Environment

INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARTICIPANTS

You are invited to participate in a research study being conducted by Beth Noble, a
Masters student in Building Science at Victoria University of Wellington.

Thank you for your interest in this project. Please read this information before
deciding whether or not to take part. If you decide to participate, thank you. If you
decide not to take part, thank you for considering my request.

Project Summary
This study examines how sensory sensitivity affects indoor environment comfort in
the built environment.

What will I be asked to do?
You will be asked to complete a survey asking you a range of questions about how
comfortable you feel in your home, your place of occupation and other buildings
you use, as well as some questions about your general sensory perception.

How much of my time will be needed to participate in this study?
We expect the survey to take approximately 15-20 minutes, depending on your
answers.

What will happen to the information I give?
This research is anonymous. This means that nobody, including any of the
researchers, will be aware of your identity.

What will the project produce?
The information from my research will be used in my Masters thesis, and may be be
published in academic journals or presented at conferences.

Can I tell other people about the study?
Yes, you can tell other people about the study by providing them with my contact
details. They can contact me to discuss their participation in the research project
and obtain an information sheet.

Do I have to answer every question?
No, you do not have to answer any questions that you do not want to.

Can I withdraw from the study?
Participation is entirely voluntary and you are not obliged to be involved. If you do
participate, you can withdraw at any time without giving a reason. You can
withdraw by not completing the survey, however once the survey has been
completed and submitted you will no longer be able to withdraw.

Data storage
Data will be stored securely on a password-protected computer with access
restricted to the investigator (myself), and my supervisors for the duration of the
project. After the completion of the project, the data will continue to be stored like
this for up to five years, after which it will be destroyed.

What if I require further information?
Please contact any of the investigators listed below, should you wish to discuss the
research further before deciding whether or not to participate. You can also request
a copy of any reports produced as a result of this research by contacting the
investigators.
