Cancn (maya: kaan kun, olla o nido de serpientes)?, es una ciudad con desarrollo
turstico de nivel internacional certificado por la Organizacin Mundial del Turismo
OMT UNWTO.2 Ubicado en la costa noreste del estado de Quintana Roo en el este de
Mxico a ms de 1.700 km de la Ciudad de Mxico, el Proyecto inici operaciones en
1974 como Centro Integralmente Planeado, pionero de FONATUR, (Fondo Nacional
de Fomento al Turismo), antes conocido como INFRATUR.

En pocos aos, tuvo una notable transformacin, ya que de ser una isla de pescadores
rodeada de selva virgen y playas desconocidas, en la actualidad es junto con Acapulco
el centro turstico mexicano ms reconocido en el mundo. Polticamente es la cabecera
del municipio de Benito Jurez, del estado de Quintana Roo. La Organizacin Mundial
del Turismo (OMT) a travs de su fundacin UNWTO-Themis concedi el premio Lo
Mejor de lo Mejor "a la excelencia y la gobernanza" al Fideicomiso de Promocin
Turstica de Cancn el 3 de febrero de 2007. Cancn se convierte de esta forma en un
organismo avalado por el Departamento de Educacin y Gestin del Conocimiento de la
OMT.

Cancun (Mayan: kaan kun, "nest of snakes")?, Is a city of international tourism

development certified by the World Tourism Organization UNWTO UNWTO.2
Located on the northeastern coast of Quintana Roo on the east Mexico, more
than 1,700 miles from Mexico City, the project began operations in 1974 as
Integrally Planned Center, a pioneer of FONATUR (National Fund for Tourism
Development), formerly known as INFRATUR.

In a few years, had a remarkable transformation since being an island of

fishermen surrounded by virgin forest and unknown shores, is currently along
with Acapulco's most renowned Mexican resort in the world. Politically is the
head of the municipality of Benito Juarez, Quintana Roo state. The World
Tourism Organization (WTO) through its foundation UNWTO-Themis awarded
the Best of the Best "for excellence and good governance" to the Trust for
Tourism Promotion of Cancun on February 3, 2007. Cancun is converted in this
way in an organization supported by the Department of Education and
Knowledge Management of the WTO.

Toponimia

Existen dos versiones sobre el origen del nombre, de acuerdo pronunciacin maya, la
primera versin es "nido u olla de serpientes" y la segunda versin y menos aceptada es
"lugar de la serpiente dorada", esto es debido a que la isla de Cancn tiene una forma
de "7" y en el amanecer aparenta una forma de serpiente dorada por el reflejo del sol.3

El escudo del municipio de Benito Jurez, que tambin representa a la ciudad de

Cancn, fue diseado por el artista chetumaleo Vital Jess Carmichael Jimnez (Elio
Carmichael) se divide en tres partes: El color azul que simboliza el Mar Caribe, el
amarillo la arena y el rojo los rayos del Sol.4

pronunciation, the first version is "nest or pot of snakes" and the second version
and less accepted is "place of golden snakes," this is because the island of
Cancun has a form of "7" and the dawn appears a golden snake form by the
reflection of sol.3

Cancun, was designed by the artist Vital chetumaleo Jesus Jimenez
Carmichael (Carmichael Elio) is divided into three parts: The color blue

Historia

Durante el periodo clsico y el perodo posclsico mesoamericano, los mayas

mantuvieron una red comercial desde la Laguna de Trminos hasta Honduras, para esta
actividad establecieron rutas martimas cuyas trayectorias recorran toda la costa del
actual estado de Quintana Roo. Debido a ello realizaron construcciones junto al mar
para efectuar intercambios comerciales, as como para vigilar y ayudar la navegacin.

De acuerdo a los estudios arqueolgicos, "El Meco" y "Yamil Lu'um" y "El Rey" fueron
puntos habitados hasta el siglo XVI. En las crnicas de Indias se describe una localidad
con el nombre de Belma, es probable que esta localidad corresponda al punto conocido
actualmente con el nombre de "El Meco".

[editar] Antecedentes a la construccin de la ciudad

La zona que ahora comprende Cancn e Isla Mujeres fue descubierta por Francisco
Hernndez de Crdoba en 1517. Pero la historia de la ciudad, propiamente dicha, es el
resultado del sueo de un grupo de banqueros que supo encontrar un punto geogrfico
donde se explotara el turismo, convirtiendo su sueo en una realidad de niveles
internacionales.

La primera referencia geogrfica de isla Cancn o Cancuen de la cual tenemos noticias,

es en base a un mapa elaborado por el cartgrafo Juan de Dios Gonzlez en el ao de
1776. Durante el siglo XIX y en el ao de 1841, el capitn Richard Owen Smith, en un
recorrido por el Caribe y Amrica Central indica en sus notas de bitcora la existencia
de edificios prehispnicos en los extremos norte y sur de la isla. Se deduce que los sitios
en cuestin son El Rey, Yamil Lu'um y El Meco (sitios detallados en la seccin Lugares
de inters).
El estadounidense John Lloyd Stephens y el britnico Frederick Catherwood
describieron en 1842, aunque muy someramente, la existencia de dos edificios situados
en Punta Kancum, ellos probablemente se referan a los templos que se encuentran
asentados en Yamil Lu'um, en la Zona Hotelera.

..Por la tarde hicimos rumbo hacia tierra firme, pasando por la isla de Kancum, que es una faja
de tierra cubierta de mdanos y de algunos edificios de piedra que an se ven. Toda esta costa
esta cubierta de arrecifes de rocas con uno u otro estrecho canal, que permite paso a las canoas,
para entrar a buscar abrigo, pero de noche es muy peligroso pretenderlo. Nosotros tenamos
muy buen viento, mas como el punto prximo se hallaba todava a bastante distancia, el patrn
(capitn) determin anclar a las cuatro de la tarde a sotavento de la Punta Nizuc....

Incidentes del viaje a Yucatn, John L. Stephens (1843) 11

Esta visita ocurri durante la poca de la primera separacin de la Repblica de

Yucatn, por la noche los expedicionarios fueron atacados por enjambres de mosquitos,
motivo por el cual fondearon la embarcacin a alguna distancia de la costa para poder
dormir.

Alice y Augustus Le Plongeon visitan la isla en 1877 y 1878 y mencionan la existencia

de un sitio al que llaman Ciudad Nizucte en el extremo sur, posiblemente ellos se
refieren al actual sitio de El Rey, pues en los alrededores de Punta Nizuc, hasta el
momento no se han hallado vestigios de algn asentamiento prehispnico. Despus, en
1895 el estadounidense William H. Holmes llega a la isla con la expedicin Allison V.
Armour y menciona sin localizar, la existencia de numerosos edificios de idntica
apariencia a los que hay en islas vecinas y en el continente, probablemente identificando
los mismos sitios: El Meco, Yamil Lu'um y El Rey.

History

[Edit] Hispanic Period

During the classical period and the post-classic period in Mesoamerica, the Maya kept
a sales network from Laguna to Honduras Terms for this activity set whose paths
traveled shipping routes along the coast of the present state of Quintana Roo. Because
of this construction performed by the sea to carry trade, and to monitor and help
navigation.

According to archaeological studies, "El Meco" and "Yamil Lu'um" and "The King"
points were inhabited until the sixteenth century. In the annals of India described a
town by the name of Belma, it is likely that this location corresponds to the point now
known by the name of "El Meco".

The area now includes Cancun and Isla Mujeres was discovered by Francisco
Hernandez de Cordoba in 1517. But the history of the city itself is the result of the
dream of a group of bankers who managed to find a geographical point where tourism
explode, turning your dream into a reality of international standards.

The first geographical reference or Cancuen Cancun island from which we hear, is
based on a map drawn by the cartographer Juan de Dios Gonzalez in the year 1776.
During the nineteenth century and in the year 1841, Captain Richard Owen Smith on a
tour of the Caribbean and Central American states in his log notes the existence of pre-
Hispanic buildings in the north and south of the island. It follows that those sites are El
Rey and El Meco Lu'um Yamil (sites listed in the section Places of interest).

American John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood described Britain in 1842,
although very briefly, the existence of two buildings located in Punta Kancum, they
probably referred to the temples that have been transcribed Lu'um Yamil in the Hotel
Zone.

In the afternoon we did .. heading to the mainland, through Kancum Island, a strip of
land covered with sand dunes and some stone buildings still visible. All this coast is
covered with reefs of rocks with one or another narrow channel that allows passage to
the canoes, to go to seek shelter, but at night is very dangerous to claim it. We had
very good wind, but as the next point was still quite a distance, the master (captain)
determined to anchor at four in the afternoon to the lee of the Punta Nizuc ....

Incidents of Travel in Yucatan, John L. Stephens (1843) 11

This visit was during the time of the first separation of the Republic of Yucatn, at night
the expedition was attacked by swarms of mosquitoes, which is why the boat anchored
at some distance from the coast to get some sleep.

Alice and Augustus Le Plongeon visit the island in 1877 and 1878 mention the
existence of a site called City Nizucte in the extreme south, possibly they refer to the
present site of the King, for around Punta Nizuc, to the have not yet been found
remains of a prehistoric settlement. Then in 1895 the U.S. William H. Holmes comes to
the island to the issuance Allison V. Armour and mentions without trace, the existence
of numerous buildings of identical appearance to those in neighboring islands and the
mainland, probably identifying the same places: El Meco, Yamil Lu'um and The King.

Zona Costera

La Zona Hotelera es una franja de arena blanca que recorre todo el este del municipio y
es la principal atraccin turstica de la ciudad. De norte a sur encontramos playas
pblicas desde Puerto Jurez (Playa del Nio, o Playa Nios) hasta llegar a la Zona
Hotelera, donde existen 9 playas pblicas con accesos sealados a lo largo de los 22 km
de la isla: del km 0 al 22: Playa las Perlas, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, Playa
Caracol, Playa Chac mool, Playa Marln, Playa Ballenas, Playa Delfines (el famoso
Mirador) y Playa Nizuc.

El acceso a la restante franja de playas ha sido restringida por las diversas cadenas
hoteleras, por lo que slo se puede acceder a otros puntos caminando sobre la misma
playa desde cualquiera de estos accesos pblicos.

Caractersticas de la vegetacin
Fauna

El zanate mexicano, husped permanente de Cancn.

Un dato interesante es el caso del ave Quiscalus mexicanus, mejor conocido como
zanate, pich o cau. Este pjaro de color negro, se ha convertido en una plaga en toda la
ciudad, esto debido a su gran adaptabilidad y hbitos. En contacto estrecho con el
hombre, el quiscal se ha apropiado de numerosas reas para su anidacin, y es comn
ver volar decenas de parvadas de cau al crepsculo y escuchar a lo largo de toda la
avenida Tulum (e incluso en el aeropuerto internacional) sus estridentes cantos antes de
dormirse sobre los rboles de los camellones.

Tambin se encuentran animales como el venado rojo que est en peligro de extincin;
tapir, tepezcuintle, boa, entre otros.

Cancn est situado en la costa oriental del continente, por lo que recibe la influencia de
corrientes marinas calientes, principalmente la Corriente del Golfo de Mxico, que
propicia un clima clido y lluvioso.

El clima predominante del Municipio Benito Jurez se incluye dentro del Grupo A, del
tipo Aw, que es clido subhmedo, con lluvias todo el ao, aunque ms abundantes en
verano.

La temperatura media anual oscila entre 25.5 grados centgrados. El total anual de las
lluvias oscila entre los 1 000 y 1 300 milmetros. Predominan los vientos del este y
sureste; durante el verano la zona se ve afectada por tormentas tropicales y ciclones. La
temporada de huracanes comienza a mediados de junio; los meses ms afectados son
septiembre y octubre.7 8
Direccin de Proteccin Civil

estos paisajes en una zona tropical como Cancn.

A pesar de la diversidad de culturas y gente en la ciudad, se ha promovido y fomentado

la cultura de huracanes a travs de la Direccin General de Proteccin Civil,
dependencia del gobierno municipal. Su principal funcin es preparar a la ciudad para
proteger y conservar a la personas y a la sociedad, as como sus bienes y entorno, ante la
eventualidad de un desastre en el municipio y, apoyar a otras entidades que soliciten su
ayuda. Las funciones de Proteccin Civil tienen por caractersticas lo siguiente:
Preventiva, Toma acciones para evitar y/o mitigar riesgos y daos a la poblacin,
coordinadora de las diferentes Instituciones que participan en una emergencia,
normativa, que se debe hacer y que no se debe hacer, facilitadora de las acciones que
realizan todas las instancias, y promotora de la Cultura de Proteccin Civil. Su funcin
es de vital importancia ante la amenaza de ciclones tropicales a lo largo de la
temporada.

Coastal Zone
The Hotel Zone is a strip of white sand that runs across the east of the town and is the
main attraction of the city. From north to south is from Puerto Jurez public beaches
(Playa del Nio, or Beach Boys) to reach the Hotel Zone, where there are 9 beaches
brought to public access along the 22 km of the island: from km 0 to 22 : Pearl Beach,
Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, Caracol beach, Playa Chac Mool, Playa Marlin, Whale
Beach, Playa Delfines (the famous Mirador) and Playa Nizuc.

Access to the remaining strip of beaches has been restricted by various hotel chains,
so that you can only access other points walking on the beach from either public
access.
Animals vegetation characteristics

Interestingly, the case of the bird Quiscalus mexicanus, better known as rook, or cause
pich. This bird black color, has become a plague throughout the city, this due to its
great adaptability and habits. In close contact with man, has appropriated quiscal many
areas for nesting, and is common to see dozens of flocks fly at dusk and listen cause
along the avenue Tulum (and even at the international airport) their strident edge
before the trees rest on the ridges.

There are also animals like red deer is endangered, tapirs, agoutis, boa, among others.

Cancun is located on the east coast of the continent, which is influenced by warm
ocean currents, notably the Gulf Stream of Mexico, which fosters a warm and rainy.

The climate of Benito Jurez municipality is included in Group A of the form Aw, it's
warm subtropical, with rainfall throughout the year, although most abundant in summer.

The average annual temperature ranges from 25.5 degrees Celsius. The total annual
rainfall ranges between 1 000 and 1 300 mm. Winds prevail from the east and
southeast, during the summer the area is affected by tropical storms and cyclones.
Hurricane season begins in mid-June, the months most affected are September and
August octubre.7
Directorate for Civil Protection

Despite the diversity of cultures and people in the city, has promoted and fostered a
culture of hurricanes through the Directorate General of Civil Protection, an agency of
municipal government. Its main function is to prepare the city to protect and preserve
the people and society and their property and environment, in the event of a disaster in
the town and support to other entities that apply for assistance. Civil Protection

or mitigate risks and threats to the population, coordinator of the various institutions

Demografa
Cancn es una ciudad cosmopolita. Su reciente creacin y desarrollo ha provocado
hasta hoy una mezcla de habitantes de diversas regiones de Mxico y otros pases, esto
debido a las numerosas ofertas de trabajo que presenta en los rubros tursticos. Sin
embargo, debido a la regin en la que se encuentra, es identificada mucho con el
folclore, gastronoma y costumbres del vecino estado de Yucatn, y la cultura Maya.

Quintana Roo es un estado muy joven que debido a la diversidad cultural que existe en
la regin tiene tambin diversidad de religiones. Segn el ltimo censo del 2010
realizado por el INEGI, se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados dentro del municipio de
Benito Jurez:10

Catlicos: 419,356.

Protestantes y evanglicos 93,415 agrupados de la siguiente manera:

o Histricas (presbiterianos, bautistas y metodistas): 10,639.

o Pentecostales y Neopentecostales: 21,478.

o Iglesia del Dios Vivo, Columna y Apoyo de la Verdad, la Luz del Mundo:
669.

o Otras Evanglicas (Iglesia de Dios, sabticos, iglesias de Cristo,

Cancun is a cosmopolitan city. His recent creation and development has

led to today a mix of people from various regions of Mexico and other
countries, this because of the many offers of work presented in tourist
areas. However, due to the region where it is located, is identified much
to folklore, cuisine and customs of the neighboring state of Yucatan and
the Mayan culture.
