THE BLOOD

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:

Identify the parts of the blood

Describe the functions of each part

Write the name of the parts of the circulatory system as indicated by each number.

1
When you have wounded yourself, blood comes out. Sometimes blood keeps on flowing
because it continuously flows in your body. You need to stop the flow of blood.

In this lesson you will learn more about your blood.

Activity 1. What does your blood do in your body?

Study the illustration below:

What does the blood carry with it? (letter A.)

What does the blood pick up? (letter B.)

2
Activity 2. What are the parts of the blood and its function?

What to do:

1. Study the illustration of the solid parts of the blood.

2. Read and learn more about them.

Red blood cells (erythrocytes)

Are the most numerous and make up

almost half of the bloods volume
Are filled with hemoglobin which
enables them to carry from the lungs
and deliver it to all body tissues.
Oxygen is used to provide energy to
cells, leaving carbon dioxide as a waste
product, which the red blood cells
carry away from the tissues and back
to the lungs.
Are produced in the red marrow of the
bones.

White blood cells (leukocytes)

are fewer in number with a ratio of

about 1 WBC to every 660 RBC.
protect the body against infections by
changing their shapes so that they can
move through capillary walls and
surround foreign organisms entering the
body.
produce antibodies to protect the body
against diseases.
one of 5 kinds (basophil, eosinophil,
lymphocyte, monocyte and neutrophil).
are produced in the bone marrow, the
lymph nodes and the spleen.

3
Platelets (thrombocytes)

are cell like particles smaller that red or

white blood cells
help seal the blood vessel and stop
bleeding.
Release substances that help promote
clotting.
Produce blood clot with the help of
vitamin K and calcium.

Plasma

consist of mostly water containing

dissolve salts and protein (mostly
albumin and antibodies).
carries hormones, electrolytes, fats,
sugar, minerals and vitamins to the
buddy tissues.
Carries antibodies to fight disease
carrying germs

Answer these:

1. Fill up the table below.

Parts/Components of the Blood Function

I LEARNED THAT:

The blood is a combination of liquid, cells, and cell like particles that travels
through the arteries, capillaries and veins.

Blood delivers oxygen and essentials nutrients to tissues and carries away carbon
dioxide and other waste products.

1. Lina has a big wound. After a few seconds, it stop bleeding. Can you tell why?
2. What will happen if your body lacks red blood cells?
3. Why people die if they lose too much blood?

I. match column A with column B. Write the letter of the correct answer.

A B

1. Red blood cells a. fight germs that cause infection

2. White blood cells b. liquid part of the blood
3. Platelets c. provides the cell of the body with
4. Plasma oxygen and nutrients
5. Blood d. are fluid within the blood vessel
6. Hemoglobin e. forms blood clot to stop bleeding
f. red pigment of the blood containing
iron
