Malaysia
Flag: Explanation:The 14 stripes on the flag represent the 14
states of Malaysia. The blue square of the flag represents the
harmony of people. The crescent symbolises Islam : the national
religion. Its use yellow colour as the colour of royalty.

National symbols:

Tiger : The tiger has been chosen as the national symbol and also included in the national
emblem. The reason is because the tiger is mostly known as the lord of the jungle.

Hibicus : The national flower of Malaysia. It is locally known as Bunga Raya. It has been
claimed that this flower came via trade from China, Japan and the Pacific islands. Hibicus is
widely used for the medical purpose.

National Monument : The monument is created to dedicated to those people who have died
in the cause of peace and freedom for the country.

Fun facts:
Nobody knows when the next election is: Malaysian elections are not fixed and scheduled
for a particular day. Malaysian people usually guess when there will be a new election?
Normally, an election usually be held at least once every 5 years. But the prime minister can
force on the election at anytime.
Independence day :
Hari Merdeka is the day described as Malaysias independence day. It was on 31 August of
each year. 1957 This day was the day that Tunku Abdul Rahman() proclaimed the
independence of the federation of Malaya, after a long period of British colonial rule.

Important holidays:
Federal territory day or Harizsekutuan : Known as Hari wilayah. It is celebrated on 1 february
every year in kulalumpur, labuan and Putrajaya. The date marks as the anniversary of
formation of the kuala lumpur federal territory in 1974.

Mahathir Mohamad : He was the fourth prime minister of Malaysia. He was in the office
from 1981 to 2003. He improved the economy and was a champion of developing nations.

Anwar Ibrahim : He is a renowned Malaysian politician who served as the nations deputy
Prime minister and is known for his pro-market economic policies.

Najib Razak : The sixth and current prime minister of Malaysia.He is the president of the
united malays national organization, the leading party in Malaysias ruling Barisan Nasional
coalition.

Important events :

1. 1826- British settlements of Malacca, Penang and Singapore combine to form the
Colony of Straits Settlements, from where the British extend their influence by
establishing protectorates over the Malay sultanates of the peninsula.
2. 1948-1960 Malayan Emergency: After World War II the Federation of Malaya was
formed through the unification of several former British territories.The negotiations
included special guarantees of rights for Malays and the establishment of a colonial
government. Malaya emergency refers to a period of unrest following the creation of
the Federation of Malaya (precursor of Malaysia) in 1948.
3. 1957 Independence: Malaya gained independence from Britain, established itself
as a constitutional monarchy, the Federation of Malaya; Tunku Abdul Rahmanas the
prime minister.
4. 1963 - British Colonies of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore join federation of Malaya
to form the federation of Malaysia.
5. 1965- Singapore; Separation from Malaysia. Malaysian Parliament voted to expel
Singapore from the Federation. Singapore withdraw from Malaysia, which is reduced
to 13 states; communist insurgency begins in Sarawak.
6. 1969 13 May 13 Incident; racial tension: Riots between Malays and Chinese
occurred in Kuala Lumpur causing state of emergency and curfew to be established.

Lee Kuan Yew : He was the first prime minister of Singapore from 1959-1990 and he
became the longest-serving PM in world history.

Lee Hsien Loong : He was the third prime minister since 2004 till now

1800 Before being colonized by the British, Singapore was a small fishing village.

1826 Singapore, Malacca and Penang become part of the British Strait Settlements, under

1832 Singapore becomes capital of Straits Settlements. The port attracts thousands of
migrants from China, India and other parts of Asia. (Colonialism)

1941-1942 Singapore was bombed by Japan. (Attack took place almost at the same time as

Singapore falls to Japan in World War II. Japan renames Singapore Light of the South.

1959 Lee Kuan Yew becomes Singapores first elected prime minister.

1963 - Singapore joined the Federation of Malaya, Sabah (North Borneo), and Sarawak in
the Federation of Malaysia.

1965 Singapore separates from the federation of Malaysia and becomes an independent
republic and joins the UN (United Nations).(Nationalism)

1972 Singapore joined Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines to create the
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Important national symbols
The Lion Head symbol:
The Lion Head is a distinctive and easily recognisable National Symbol of Singapore. Less
formal than the other symbols such as the National Flag and the State Crest, the Lion Head
symbol can be freely used by individuals, organisations and corporations to promote a sense
of national identity.

National Coat of Arms:


Also known as the National Coat of Arms, the State Crest serves as a symbol of Singapores
status as a self-governing and independent state.

National Flower:
Singapore is a Garden City, rich in greenery and biodiversity. It is thus fitting that the nation
is represented by a unique National Flower of its own.

FUN FACTS:
- Singapore have the biggest Yakult bottles in Southeast Asia

of course the most expensive.
- There were no lions in Lion City
- Singapore, the smallest country in South-east Asia, means "Lion City" in Malay
and Sanskrit respectively, but there were no lion ever lived there although it is
used as the symbol and heritage of the country.
- Singapore was founded and named by Sang Nila Utama, but he was confused
between lion and Malaysian Tiger which he was probably seeing.

The National Day in Singapore is celebrated every year on the 9th of August in honor of the

birthday of the nation. On 9th August 1965, Singapore separated from the Federation of Malaysia

and became an independent country. The first National Day is celebrated in 1966 in Singapore.

Hari Raya Puasa


On Hari Raya Puasa or Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Muslims in Singapore end their time of
fasting with a joyous celebration of forgiveness, fellowship, and food. Hari Raya
Puasa falls on the first day of Syawal, the tenth month of the Hijrah (Islamic) lunar
calendar. Because it depends on the lunar calendar, the date varies each year.

Meet the myth


Half-fish and half-lion, the iconic Merlion resides at the waterfront Merlion
Park.
A fishy tale
The body symbolises Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village when
it was called Temasek, meaning 'sea town' in Old Javanese.
Its head represents Singapores original name, Singapura, or lion city in
Malay.
Today, you can glimpse this legend at Merlion Park. Spouting water from its
mouth, the Merlion statue stands tall at 8.6 metres and weighs 70 tonnes.
This icon is a must-see for tourists visiting Singapore, similar to other
significant landmarks around the world.
Built by local craftsman Lim Nang Seng, it was unveiled on 15 September 1972
by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at the mouth of the Singapore River, to
welcome all visitors to Singapore.

quarter is ASEAN. We get to vote for our topic for the project, our group got
Malaysia & Singapore The leadership of Dr. Mahathir Mohamad & Lee Kuan Yew.
As it is called Self-directed project.This project is created for us to be able to learn
and gain knowledge by ourself. The reason why it is being made are because as we
have been studied about ASEAN, we need to show that we are really learnt
something. By creating this project, it will enhance our ability in learning, creating the
learning process, as well as improve the learning skills that is essential.
