What sound does a cow make?

Developmental Focus (What developmental domains or skills will this lesson

address? Are you working to help children achieve a particular milestone?) Am I
focused on helping children learn and grow in a particular domain set in the NYS
Early Learning Standards?)

In this lesson will help children learn and grow in a few domains in the NYS Early
Learning Standards, such as interactions with adults and adaptive social behavior
(Domain 2), Language, Communication and Literacy (Domain 5).

Objective(s) (What will children know, or demonstrate as a result of this learning

experience?

Children will learn about different farm animals living on the farm and the sounds
that they make.

Connection to Standards (if applicable) (Be sure to specify which set of standards
you are working with to construct your learning activity)

NYS Early Learning Guidelines

18 to 36 Months: Domain 5 Language, Communication, and Literacy
J. Reading Phonological Awareness
3. Imitates tempo and seed of sound.

Relevance/Rationale (Why are the objectives of this lesson important with regard
to supporting the development, growth and learning of infants and toddlers?)

This lesson will teach toddlers about the verity of farm animals on the farm. And
the sounds associated with that animal . In addition this lesson will introduce the
children to early literacy skills such as book handling. Lastly, this will help
toddlers develop their expressive and oral language through the discussion,
sounds and organized peer interaction.

Time Needed: This lesson will take approximately Dive to ten minutes.

Instructional Context (Is this activity a whole group learning experience, or an

activity designed for an individual, or small group?)

This activity will be done during morning circle as a large group activity.

Procedure (step by step) (will the children be participating in the activity in a

whole group, small group, or individually? How will you get childrens attention?
What will happen during the lesson what will they do? What will you do?)

This lesson is a whole group activity. The children will sit in a circle on the meeting
rug. The lead teacher and the assistant will sit on the rug with the children. The
lead teacher will begin circle time and lead the lesson. The third classroom teacher
will sit nearby, observing and taking notes for our assessments. The lead teacher
will hold the book, Peek a Moo, up to the children. She will read the story out
loud, pausing between pages so the children will mimic the sounds made by the
animals. The teacher will prompt the students to make the sounds by making the
sounds herself and encouraging the students to repeat after her. Peek a Moo is a
pop up book, so the teacher will invite students to come up and Dlip the tabs to see
the animals themselves and associate them with the sound more tacitly.

Resources/Materials Needed

The Book Called Peek-a-Moo!" by Maria Cimarusti and Illustrated by Stephanie

Petersen.

Room modiSications (what changes, if any, will you need to make to the physical
environment to enrich this experience?)

No changes needed to the physical environment.

Plan for differentiated instruction/Instructional modiSications (How will you

support the individual needs of children?)

Teacher will use farm animal puppets for visual and tactile learners.

Method of assessing childrens growth and learning (What methods will you
employ to document, or provide evidence of childrens growth and learning? Specify
the assessment tools that will be used to provide you with evidence of childrens
learning, or that objectives have been met)

The third, observing teacher will record the childrens sounds and participation
levels through anecdotal records and observation. They will then determine
whether the objective of the lesson was executed and understood by the children.

Follow-up/Extension Activities (How can I provide an opportunity to remediate,

reinforce, or expand on students learning today in class?)

After reading the book, the teacher will have the children become the farm animals
by acting out movements and making the sounds. The teacher and students will do
it together.
