IT HAPPENED IN FLEISCHMANNS

In the early 1900's, Griffin Corners was a major vacation destination for people from all along the eastern seaboard. Hotels
were going up one after the other, as well as more modest guest houses. Charles Vermilyea came up with the idea that cre-
ating a lake for recreation would be a big draw, and work began on the dam in 1906. The body of water created was to be
called Lake Switzerland, after the nearby Hotel Switzerland--a smart marketing move, as it created visions in potential visi-
tors minds of Alpine scenery.

Many men (and horses) worked on the dam over the winter and spring, and in June 1907 it was completed. The lake filled
quickly, and by mid-summer, this added recreational resource was active. Vermilyea bought a boat that had earlier plied
Lake Wawaka at Halcottsville to run on the new lake. Many images show all manner of boats out on the new lake.

Some sources show that the dam provided hydroelectric power for the village; it certainly was used for ice harvesting in the
winter. In pre-refrigeration days, ice harvested from the lake in the winter was used all summer long to keep produce, and
especially milk, cold.

The newly-created lake also was responsible for something of a real estate boom. Suddenly there was new 'lakefront' prop-
erty--some parcels changed hands several times, as land speculators rushed in. The lake graced our community until 2003. It
is greatly missed.

Maple Festival 2017 Update

We have planned a weekend of events to celebrate the grand tradition of collecting
sap and making Maple Syrup. The sap started running early this year. Davis Farm had
30 gallons of maple syrup before this latest cold snap. Medical research has found that
maple syrup is a much better sweetener than sugar for two reasons, first, two-thirds of
a cup of maple syrup equals 1 cup of refined sugar meaning maple syrup has fewer calories, and second, maple syrup
has anticancer properties. But we like it because it tastes good!
Agree? Then come out and celebrate with us. All of the events except the Pancake Breakfast, a fundraiser for the
Fleischmanns Community Church, and the entrance fee for the Sap House race, are free. Even the Maple Bake-Off Caf
where everyone will get a taste of the maple infused baked goods entered in the bake off and maple ice cream courte-
sy of the Fleischmanns/Pine Hill Rotary, maple cookies, coffee, tea, and our famous punch, courtesy of Fleischmanns
First. All baked goods will be auctioned off. And of course, the Maple Bake Off Caf will feature Maple on Main
Themed art, sculpture and furniture. See you on Sunday, March 26th.
Everything Maple, a Pop Up Store will be located at 1033 Main Street, space provided by John and Gloria Mulloy. The
store will be stocked with Tree Juice Maple Syrup, maple candies, maple cookies, maple salad utensils, maple soap,
maple candles, Union Grove Maple Vodka, Two Stones Farm Maple Whipped Cheese and our Maple Bake Off Cook-
book. All items for sale, from 11-5, Saturday and Sunday.
Bill Birns is hosting a presentation by The Catskill Forest Association, Sugarin in the Catskills, and Tree Identification in
the Catskill Forest at Skene on Saturday at 1pm.
Bring the kids to 1053 Main Street on Saturday for the Maple Themed Craft project at 1pm. While they are working on
their project you can view the maple inspired photos, paintings, sculptures, carved maple bowls, and maple furniture
of the Maple on Main Art show. Then go to the Gazebo for a wagon ride to the Davis farm sugar shack for a demon-
stration on how maple syrup is made the old fashion way.
The Maple on Main Art Show opens Saturday with an Artist Reception from 4-6pm. Meet the artists, sip some wine
and view the art.
Sap House Run/Walk starts from the Gazebo to Big Red Kill Road, back to Depot Street, Wagner Avenue and back to
Main Street. Registration begins at 10:45am at 1053 Main Street, the race starts at 11am on Sunday, March 26th. Regis-
tration and guidelines are available at fleischmannsny.com and markproject.org as are the application and guidelines
for the Maple Bake-off.
Maple Royalty will be crowned by Mayor Don Kearney at the Maple Bake-off Caf at 1:30pm Sunday, March 26th.
