The proposed cuts are unprecedented:

Cuts of $193 billion over 10 years from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
will eliminate 45 billion meals for program participants. More than 400,000 people in Connecticut
right now rely on SNAP to help them meet basic nutritional needs. And Connecticut children
make up more than 35% of SNAP participants in the state. They are among the 42 million
Americans who will be hurt by these cuts.
Cutting $27 million in the next year to The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) will
reduce by 33 million meals available to people in need through food banks, local pantries and
emergency shelters. TEFAP represents about 25% of the food the Connecticut Food Bank
distributes each year.
Other safety net programs face similar, crippling cuts: $800 billion cut from Medicaid; a $40
billion cut to the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit; and elimination of the Low-
Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
These proposed cuts will devastate struggling families and increase pressure on the
Connecticut Food Bank to meet rising needs.
