3. PENETRANT TESTING
It is the improved version of VT reliability in
specific applications. It is classified as a surface
method, we can distinguish between scratch and
crack. Sensitivity increases, it means better
resolution with more susceptible condition.
Only open-to-surface defects can be detected,
good cleaning is necessary, applied to smooth
surfaces. A manual technique of cans (sprays) is
very popular in the course of in-service inspections
for the detection of flaws and fatigue cracks.
5. HOLIDAY TESTING
It is a test process (continuity test) which the
operator can identify holidays (imperfections) in
the coating. Electrode is passed over the coating
surface. If the coating resistance is low or holiday
is present, an audio signal is heard due to an
electrical discharge from the electrode on the
material surface. Different thickness of coating
requires different settings.
6. HARDNESS TESTING
It is most widely used mechanical test for
evaluating the properties of metals. The
hardness of a material usually is considered
resistance to permanent indentation. In
general, an indenter is pressed into the
surface of the metal to be tested under a
specific load for a definite time interval, and
a measurement is made of the size or depth
of the indentation.
7. LEAK DETECTION
This method can be applied everywhere.
The equipment is used just for inspection
of close or direct accessible areas, such as
tanks, tubes and vessels. The benefit of
this method is a transparency and
understandable reported information.
We can measure defect dimensions and
data can be stored simply via photos.
