Being a nurse is not an easy job. It is also considered the most
demanding professions in the world which needed a lot of dedication and commitment to the job. Most people do not appreciate the real nature of the responsibilities of a nurse. They only view nurses as doctors assistant or those who merely administers a single shot at the hospital. But in reality, Nurses play various roles in the healthcare system. A nurse has to act as a caregiver, case manager, researcher, a role model, advocator, communicator, and as a nurse educator.
Nurse educators play an essential role in strengthening the nursing
workforce. They assure quality educational experiences that prepare the nursing workforce for a diverse and ever-changing health care environment. As OMara, 1997 says, They are to bridge the gap between the realism of the workplace and the idealism of an academic environment without compromising professional ideals'.
As a nurse educator, it needs a lifelong commitment in teaching. I can
always feel the high degree of satisfaction in my work because I was able to share my knowledge to learners. Added to that, I was able to help students and practicing nurses identify their learning needs, strengths and weaknesses, how to be innovative as well as guide them to their chosen opportunities and help them overcome their weaknesses and build more on their strengths in life. On the other hand, it helps me in my professional growth through unending access to information, research, and opportunities to collaborate with other health professionals, stimulating work place and flexible work schedule. As an educator, I must model a professional values and skills that will ultimately influence the quality of care provided by future nurses. It needs a lot of dedication and understanding. I must possess excellent communication skills because good communication is important in building strong bond to learners thus ensuring a better cooperation and increases chances of success. As Myrick & Yonge, 2005 say, The trust in the relationship will provide ideal teaching-learning climate which encourages more discussions and critical thinking, a positive atmosphere where the student will feel at ease to express themselves. Moreover, I must be creative to have a more interesting discussion, flexible to adjust in a hectic work schedule, possess critical thinking and substantive knowledge and skills. In addition, I must have leadership skills, ability to encourage decision-making and critical thinking, enthusiasm and positivity towards teaching and learning.
As a nurse educator, I view teaching as a rewarding pursuit because I
was able to share my expertise to those students who are entering nurse profession or to nurses returning to advance their practice. Added to that, I am motivated to teach because teaching gives the opportunity to influence students success and Im glad that I have become one of those who shape the next generation of nurses.
