INTRODUCTION

(A) Project In Our Syllabus:


In the new syllabus, prescribed by West
Bengal Council for Higher Secondary
Education, project work has been included as
a part of course content. IN class XII, four
topics have been selected:
i. Flim/Theatre Script
ii. Fictitious Interview of an Eminent
Personality(Current or Historical)
iii. Changing the
background/Time/Social Context of a
play and recording how the
characters behave in a changed
scenario.
iv. Indianization of the writings of some
English writers like Charles Dickens,
Thomas hardy, Leo Tolstoy, Oscar
Wilde. Out of these four projects,
only one can be chosen. In our class,
I understood the aspets of different
projects and chose the fourth topic.

(B) Objectives:
i. We will be able to find out the
settings of a story.
ii. We will be able to visualize the
setting and change it to Indian
scenario.
iii. We will be able to find out the
aspects of the Indian atmosphere,
culture, life and living.
iv. We will able to compare our own
setting with that of the other nations.
v. A feeling of Indianness will grow
among us.

(C) Resources:
Collection of writings of Leo Tolstoy.

(D) Limitations:
i. We are not acquainted with most of
the writers and their works. We have
only read Leo Tolstoys story.
ii. It needs more ti e than the alotted
time limit of six periods.
iii. A great deal of teachers help is
needed to select the writing.

METHODS AND
TECHNIQUES:
Introduction:
In this project, the whole task from selection
of the story to Indianization of the writing was
conducted following a time-bound routine.
Our teacher fixed up a schedule by breaking
up the task into day-wise activities.

First Day:
On the first day, I
i. Read throughly the story some short
stories of Leo Tolstoy.
ii. Selected Leo Tolstoys short story- Three
Questions.
iii. Our teacher told us about Indianness,
different aspects of Indian society and
culture, atmosphere and nature.
iv. The story was read aloud to its end.

Second Day:
On the second day,
i. Each student started to change his story
in a way that it looked typically Indian.
ii. Facing some difficulties I consulted with
teachers.

Third Day:
On the third day,
i. Each student drafted their Indian version
of the story.
ii. Each student read their final manuscript.
iii. Each student photocopied and
distributed drafts of their manuscript
among others for suggestion.
iv. Each student graded other manuscripts,
on a grade scale of A to D.

Fourth Day:
On the fourth day,
i. I write the final manuscript.
ii. I read out the manuscript.

Fifth Day:
On the fifth day,
i. A photocopy of the final manuscript
given for review.
ii. Each student discussed among
themselves and made a draft of the
review.
iii. Each student read out their reviews.

Sixth Day Evaluation:


On the sixth day,
i. Some of the students shared how they
enjoyed the whole process.
ii. We, all the students along with me
submitted their project report for
evaluation.
CONCLUSION
After completing the project, we have
learnt the following:

i. How to discover the socio-cultural


reflections of a particular country in a
piece of writing.
ii. How the characters behave in a
specific socio-cultural scenario.
iii. How an Indian scenario is different
from other countries.
iv. How the human appeal of some
universal elements are closely
connected.
v. How a story should set in an Indian
milieu.
vi. The utility of collaborativeeffort in
creative writing and critical thinking.
vii. The importance of culture and nature
in our life.
viii. How writing skills can be developed by
such knd of project work.
ix. How to enjoy learning in a cordial
situation.
x. How to share our feelings and opinions
with each other.
