Introduction

System Configuration

The Conning Display System is able to receive information from various sensors.
The Conning Display System can adopt information either in analogic or in serial
data format which is sent by the sensors, makes navigation calculation from
received data and shows this information on Conning Display.
Communication co-processor is used to collect data from sensors and to send
data forward to main processor.
The Conning System can be connected to up to eight sensor which send analogic
data and up to eight sensors which send serial data.

Datum of displayed co-ordinates

General
Datum is a mathematical model of the earth, based on which the sea chart has
been made. Datum connects together the positioning and the sea chart. If the
Datum of position sensor and the sea chart are different, a transformation has to
be made somewhere in the system. Not doing so can result in errors of several
sea miles. Generally, it can be assumed that the error is at least of the magnitude
of a cable (0.1 NM). The difference between two Datums is never constant, but
depends on position. This means that the difference term of WGS 84 and local
Datum, generally used in paper charts, is not generally valid with electronic sea
charts.

Paper charts
Datums used in paper charts has been traditionally national Datums for historical
reasons. Many paper charts do not have a marked Datum, compatibility with
electronic charts may be complicated. In some paper charts, the correction terms
instead of Datum are printed, for correction of the WGS 84 system satellite
locations. The correction terms are usable but only with the paper chart in
question.

Positioning devices and Datum

In early days of the electronic positioning devices, no attention was generally
paid to Datums because the commonly used systems utilised special charts (like
Decca charts). Later on, a data output was added to these systems, but still no
attention was paid to Datums and the errors were considered as inaccuracy of the
system. The spread of the GPS has made Datum better known, because an
accurate position is of no value, if in a wrong Datum. GPS satellites in the space
utilise the WGS-84 Datum. However the WGS-84 Datum is not a general
solution for all positioning systems, due to differences between electronic sea
chart system and the chart material displayed.
Note! Selection of Datum must be done by service personnel with knowledge of
different Datums. To change datum, see chapter "How to change Datum of
displayed co-ordinates" on page 44.

Color Palette of Conning Display

You can select appropriate colour to conning display depending on brightness of

the bridge. There are a few predefined set of palette from which you can select
desired set. The options are followed:
Day bright
Day blackback
Note! Selection of Color Palette must be done by service personnel . To change
palette, see chapter How to change palette of conning display on page 45.

Time and Date

The world has been divided into 24 different time zone. In the system can be
modified to output desired time and date by user.
Note! Selection of Time and Date must be done by service personnel . To
change Time and Date, see chapter Time and Date on page 47.

10 Operator Manual Operator and Technical Manual of Conning System

System Failure
The Conning Display program has two separately tasks, one collects data from
various sensors and another displays them on display. The both tasks must be
running while using this system. There is a program called ECAWATCH which
inspects that both tasks are running. If one or both of them stops, ECAWATCH
will start the task. If for some reason, ECAWATCH failed to start task, the
ECAWATCH dialog box appears with indication of type of the System Failure.

The ECAWATCH process has failed to restart stopped INS PROCESS. The ECAWATCH
dialog box has appeared with System Failure indication.

In the situation shown above you have to connect a service keyboard and a
service mouse to Conning processor to start task by yourself. For more
information, see chapter "How to start INS PROCESS" on page 74.

Position Equipment
The Conning System displays position from the source which is installed as the
prior position of Position equipment. (i.e. You have two position equipment
installed on board DGPS in Position Equipment 1 and GPS in Position
Equipment 2, then the system displays position from DGPS source. If DGPS
position device became defective then the system displays position from GPS
source. If both of position source became defective then the system displays
position as DEAD RECKONING.) Install the most accurate position equipment
in Position Equipment 1, and next most accurate in Position Equipment 2 and
so on. Position equipment from 3 to 6 are not used and they should all have
"Connection:" field set as "Disconnected".

NOTES:
GLL uses messages VTG and GLL.
PAT uses messages VTG, PAT and SHR,POS.
GGA uses messages VTG and GGA.
Use of differential signal with GPS can be detected with GGA and
SHR,POS. A device using identification GLL and device type 8 (= DGPS)
will always be detected as differential regardless of receiver status.

Cmg delay is delay between own ship turning and course made good in the
VTG-message to detect turning. Typically values are from 0 to 15 seconds.
Because no message have any datum indication, the user is responsible for
used reference system in position receiver. GGA message is supposed to be
always in WGS-84, but unfortunately some manufacturer doesnt follow
standards.
Only one of connected sensors is allowed to send ZDA message, which will
be used to adjust the Vector system clock,. if time difference is larger than 5
seconds and if the Navigation processor is not steering (ie. mode is
STEERING OFF or AUTOPILOT) and if the system has filter in OFF
position.
Offset from antenna position to final position is essential for speed, course,
drift and predictor related calculation. Final position is position of radar
antennas.
Roll&pitch receive enable is used only with PAT.
