Dear TYWLS Families,

Welcome to Participation in Government! The purpose of this course is to create a culminating


experience that relates the content and skills of the K-11 social studies curriculum to the individual
students need to act as a responsible citizen. Students will develop a better understanding of how local,
state, and federal governing organizations work and understand how citizens directly and indirectly
interact with government at all levels. Students will participate in rigorous activities that involve the
defining, analysis, monitoring, and discussion of public issues and policies. I look forward to working with
you to prepare your child for success.

Course Topics:
Foundations and Comparative Perspectives Citizenship in Comparative Perspective
Citizenship, Participation, and the Electoral Process Legal Obligations of Citizenship
Legal Rights and Responsibilities

Materials for Differentiation:


This course will utilize a wide range of resources to meet the needs of all learners. We will incorporate
the use of film excerpts, educational video segments, visual and written primary source documents, and
graphic organizers.

Grading Policy
Assessment 50% (25% Exams, 15 % Quizzes, 10% mini-projects) - 20 % Homework - 30% Evidence of
Critical thinking in classroom

Recommended Materials: Spiral Notebook with 3 holes, 1 pack of loose leaf, 2 pocket folders,
blue/black pens, Planner

Project-based Learning Opportunities:


This course will use real-world activities and assessments including: class discussions, Socratic Seminars,
debates, mock trials, role plays, investigations, simulations, and Common Core expository and
argumentative essays.

childs grades, assignments, and attendance. Tutoring will take place immediately after school on
