Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s),

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or student, the concept of school and behavior expectations always
seems to be one of the most difficult pieces to talk about and understand. This conversation, at times, is
met with differences of opinions, questions, concerns, etc. Ultimately, we accept rules and move forward
knowing that the adults in our students’/children’s lives want what is best for kids; a nurturing and safe
environment where children can be curious, have fun, and be empowered in regards to learning.

Last year, the Indian Trail staff and administration identified a need for a consistent set of expectations
for student behavior. Collectively, they devised a set of expectations that are clear, positive and
applicable to all settings. These behavior expectations will be implemented this year. The following are
the Indian Trail Expectations for appropriate behavior.

Behavior Expectations:

1. I will behave so that everyone can learn.

2. I will keep my hands and feet to myself.
3. I will respect others with my words and actions.
4. I will walk in the school building.
5. I will be quiet in the hallways.

While the above behavior expectations are clear and concise, they don’t tell our students about the logical
and realistic consequences for not following them. Inappropriate behaviors will be handled on a case-by-
case basis in the moment. What does this look like? The adult in charge may process the behavior with
the student and seek a more appropriate alternative behavior, the student may earn a verbal warning,
and/or the student may earn a “time out” to think about the behavior. Please know at all times, the
student and the adult will process and resolve any issues in a respectful and private manner. In the event
that the student continues to have difficulty following the expectations or the behavior warrants a stiffer
consequence, the student will be asked to report to the Quiet Room (see attached page for information)
during lunch to process.

Mari Meyer (School Social Worker) and I will be visiting every classroom at the beginning of the school
year to discuss these expectations with all students. It is my request that you discuss these expectations
with your child as well. We appreciate your assistance and support as we work to create a learning
environment that is conducive to high levels of learning, consistency, and fun for all.
