What is your individual freedom worth? In the late 17th and 18th century there were
plenty of changes to the society. There were thinkers back then and they are called philosophes,
they tried to make changes in their society. There were four people who made a difference in
their society it was John locke, voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Each and
everyone of them had differences but they wanted the same thing to change.
John locke wanted individual freedom for people in the government. He believed that
every man is born free. He thought that we are all equal and we should be the same, and that
there was nothing more. Just like John Locke there was many people who agreed with the
Then there was Mary Wollstonecraft she switched it up just a little bit, she wanted
freedom for others in her society but she also believed in feminism. Where women should have
education just like men did, and they should work just like men did. She fought for the right of
Adam Smith believes that everyone should work for their own benefits. He wants
individual freedom and no government to help with that. Adam doesnt agree with the idea of the
government controlling you, he wants his society to have to work on their own.
Voltaire, wanted his society to change with peace and the fact that religion could be
accepting in his time. He was a very religious man and just thought how amazing it would be for
All of these philosophers wanted one thing to change in their life, but yet in the same
breath they had different meaning in individual freedom. Government, religion, the economy,
and the role of women have impacted us in many ways even to this day.
