Reflection Form:
Name: Kimberly Ebaugh
Activity Name: Videotaping on mini lesson in writing
Dates: April/May 2017
What is your learning as a result of this experience?
I videotaped a mini lesson in writing so that I could evaluate my teaching and how I
could improve my effectiveness in how I deliver instruction. While viewing my video,
I was able to focus on the students and how they were responding to my teaching
point on how to revise their narratives to include more powerful words and phrases.
I was able to first use an anchor text that we had already read and provided
examples from that text to then model how I might add powerful words to my
narrative. The students were very engaged in the lesson, but I noticed some habits
that I have such as saying so way to many times!
What immediate actions are you going to take?
I am going to be more mindful about repeating certain words when I teach and also
include more of asking students to repeat back to me rather than me repeating
what Ive said. Even though I know that it was a teaching point and only 10 minutes
long, it made me realize that 10 minutes is still a long time for students to be
seated. I have to remember a turn and talk even in those mini lessons although
students were still showing engagement.
What are the long term implications?
I know now that videotaping can really help teachers to evaluate their teaching and
I think although it can be painful to watch, you do get used to it and get right to the
skills and strategies that are taught and how I can become a more effective teacher
by self-evaluating my strengths and then setting goals to help me to improve.
