- Let us explain first the basic concepts in nail care servicing.
-Let us discuss and identify the nail structure and shapes.
- And also the advantage of nail care treatment.

Structure Parts of the Nail

External and Internal Parts of the Nail

-Nails are one of those key parts of our body, which are not only the primary focus
of wellness regimes of many men and women, but also serve as a potent indicator
of a persons health. Based on how fast or slow they grow, how strong or brittle they
are and how shiny or dull they look, we can gain a fair amount of insight into the
inner workings of our body. But how often do we stop and really think about what
constitutes our nails, and what really is their function?

Since Paawanees focus is on holistic wellness care, we would love to use this
platform to throw some light on how finger and toe nails are formed and how they
functions as a unit.

The structure of the nail is divided into twelve parts and each serves a central
function. Yes, twelve (more than the image shows)! Surprising right?
Lets look at these parts, briefly.

The Nail Bed: This is the portion of skin upon which the nail plate rests.
Nail Plate: The nail plate is composed of layers of keratinized skin cells.
The Free Edge: The nail plate leaves the end of the finger and forms a projection
that is called the free edge.
The Hyponychium: This is a part of the epidermis under the free edge of the nail
plate. Its function is to protect the nail bed from infection.
The Nail Grooves: This lies alongside of the edge of the nail plate. The function of
the nail groove is to keep the nail growing in a straight line.
The Matrix: This is the growing area of the nail and sometimes called as the nail
root. The Nail Mantle: The nail mantle is the layer of epidermis at the base of the
nail, before the cuticle. The function of the nail mantle is to protect the matrix from
physical damage.
The Lunula: This is located at the base of the nail, lying over the matrix. It is white
in color and known as half-moon.
The Cuticle: The overlapping epidermis around the base of the nail is called the
cuticle. The function of the cuticle is to protect the matrix from infection.
The Nail Walls: These are the folds of the skin overlapping the sides of the nails.
The function of the nail wall is to protect the nail plate edges.
The Paronychium: This is the collective name given to the nail walls and the
cuticle area.

The Eponychium: This is the extension of the cuticle at the base of the nail plate,
under which the nail plate emerges from matrix. The function of eponychium is to
protect matrix from infection.

what shape are you? {nail shapes}

Have you ever tried a different nail shape than your used to? Nail shapes hit hard in
2015 and it seemed like every star rocked long, unique shaped nails to red carpet
events. Wonder whats trending now and what all those shapes are called? Look no
further!

Square/Sqouval
The most traditional French Manicure look!

This shape will enhance your fingers and add a more widened appearances!
Squoval is similar but with the corners rounded. This is your most common shape
and is the most popular throughout the country.
Round
The most natural look! Very conservative look especially for a men. Very clean cut,
simple, and basic shape. If you have wide hands, a rounded nail shape can help
your hands look a bit thinner.

Oval
This shape gives you a more feminine gracefulness look! It can make your nails look
longer than it is with the side being more curved in.
Pointed/Stiletto

A very adventurous bold look! This look also makes the appearance of your fingers
longer, a very noticeable EXTREME eye-catcher!

Ballerina/Coffin

A mixture of stiletto and square shape. A more curvier sides and the tip square off
instead of pointed. This shapes is usually seen with someone who has longer length
to achieve this look. This is also an adventurous level but still want to keep a small
traditional look with the tip straight across.

Almond

This shape is much more narrower than the oval shape. This elongates your fingers
and adds a sexy tough attitude to your hands!

All these look may be achieved depending on the length of your nails, obviously a
coffin shape would be difficult if your nails are close to your nail bed length. Also a
key factor to consider if how active you are throughout the day. The longer, pointier
shapes might not make sense for your lifestyle. Remember a nail shape is another
way to make a personal statement and the best part? Its not permanent! Try
almond shape one month and switch to square the next! So which one is your
favorite? Whats your next new nail shape?
The Nail Bed: This is the portion of skin upon which the nail plate rests. It has very
rich supply of blood and lymph vessels to keep nail healthy. The function of the nail
bed is to supply nourishment and protection.

Nail Plate: The nail plate is composed of layers of keratinized skin cells. The layers
are packed very closely together with fat but very little water content. The nail
gradually grows over the nail bed and becomes free edge. There are no blood
vessels or nerves in the nail plate. The pink color of the nail plate derives from the
blood vessels that passes beneath it. The main function of the nail plate is to
protect the living nail bed of the fingers and toes.

The Free Edge: The nail plate leaves the end of the finger and forms a projection
that is called the free edge. This is attached to the nail bed and appears as white.
The function of the free edge is to protect the fingertip and the hyponychium. This is
the part we file and shape!

The Hyponychium: This is a part of the epidermis under the free edge of the nail
plate. Its function is to protect the nail bed from infection.

The Nail Grooves: This lies alongside of the edge of the nail plate. The function of
the nail groove is to keep the nail growing in a straight line.

The Matrix: This is the growing area of the nail and sometimes called as the nail
root. The shape and size of the matrix determines the thickness of the nail. The
process of the keratinization takes place in the epidermal cells of the matrix,
forming the hardened tissue of the nail plate. The function of the matrix is to
produce new nail cells.

The Nail Mantle: The nail mantle is the layer of epidermis at the base of the nail,
before the cuticle. The function of the nail mantle is to protect the matrix from
physical damage.
The Lunula: This is located at the base of the nail, lying over the matrix. It is white
in color and known as half-moon. The nail is slightly soft in this area and can be
easily damaged.

The Perionychium: This is the collective name given to the nail walls and the
cuticle area.

The Eponychium: This is the extension of the cuticle at the base of the nail plate,
under which the nail plate emerges from matrix. The function of eponychium is to
protect matrix from infection.
