Gender Equality in the Labor Market in the Philippines

This book contains a gendered analysis of the labor market, policies and
legislation of the Philippines. It provides recommendations for policies and legislation
that have the potential to expand or improve employment and work opportunities for
women in specific sectors in the country. The book emphasizes that the key mechanism
in order to be able to achieve inclusive growth for women is the expansion of
employment opportunities and decent work outcomes for women to promote gender
equality in labor markets. It identified the labor force participation rate gap, the human
capital gap, the unpaid domestic and care work gap, the vulnerable employment gap,
the employment rate gap, and the decent work gap in order to come up with a detailed
analysis of gender equality in the labor market in the Philippines. Moreover, the book
provides a discussion of its proposed solution on how to address the challenges and
reduce the constraints on women in the labor market. Compared to the past, gender
equality in the Philippine labor market is already quite evident.

The Laws of the Fifith Discipline

1. Todays problems come from yesterdays solutions.

SM Supermalls would certainly have fewer shoppers the days after they hold their 3-
DaySale event.

2. The harder you push, the harder the system pushes back.
The earlier you finish a class case or project, the more projects the teacher will be
giving to you.

3. Behavior grows better before it grows worse.

During her youth, a lady loves to wear makeup and she certainly looks very lovely
everyday. However, as she grows, the long=term side effects of her daily use of makeup
appears through her unhealthy and wrinkled skin.

4. The easy way out usually leads back in.

This is when one thinks living an independent life is very fulfilling with all the freedom
one would get. After some time, one will realize that it is better to live with ones family
where food, utility expenses, etc are free.

5. The cure can be worse than the disease.

The Filipinos initially thought that Duterte could be the cure of the nation, eradicating
corruption in the government. However, at present, it is evident that the solutions of
Duterte in his battle against drugs is very lethal as portrayed by the extra judicial killings.

6. Faster is slower.
The faster you do things in a quiz, the more likely you are to commit an error. Double
checking will surely take time making you finish the exam at a longer time.

7. Cause and effect are not closely related in time and space.
Sometimes, the cause for a problem is not necessarily directly related to the parts of
the problem. For example, a faulty faucet does not necessarily mean the plumber did
not install it correctly, there are various reasons that could be behind it such as the
faucet is a factory defect or MAYNILAD did not allow you to tap into their water system
yet or there may be no water in the city.

8. Small changes can produce big results but the areas of highest leverage
are often the least obvious.
Teachers or educators are the professionals that are often disregarded in society.
However, without them, there will certainly be no educated children, and no youth to be
the hope of the nation.

9. You can have your cake and eat it too but not at once.
An apparel company is usually torn in producing high quality garments at an
expensive price or low quality ones at a much affordable price in order to be able to
increase the companys sales.

10. Dividing an elephant in half does not produce two small elephants.
People see Mindanao as a Muslim-infested city, assuming that bombs are being
dropped at the city centers everyday. In reality, only a very view cities in Mindanao
are dominantly Muslim and they are certainly not terrorists. Also, there are only a
selected view cities in the southern part of Mindanao that experience crimes more
often.

11. There is no blame.

Instead of blaming the teacher for asking an item in the exam that she did not
discuss in class, always reevaluate yourself first. You could have listened attentively in
class and studied the lessons in advance. You could have also made readings of other
relevant documents for your own learning.
