Arranging Machines in a GT Cell

Method to organize the machines into the most logical
arrangement (after part-machine groupings have been
identified by rank order clustering)

Two methods
Hollier Method 1 (text P. 448)
Hollier Method 2 (text P. 450)

DQ047-01 Manufacturing Systems Week 13 / Lecture 3 1

Hollier Method 1 Example

From-To chart

To: 1 2 3 4

From: 1 0 5 0 25

2 30 0 0 15

3 10 40 0 0

4 10 0 0 0

5 parts trip from machine 1 to machine 2, 30 parts trip

from machine 2 to machine 1, etc.

Third iteration with Machine 3 and 2 removed

To: 1 4 From

From: 1 0 25 25

4 10 0 10

To sums 10 25

Minimum To and minimum From are same: Minimum To From

Hollier Method 2 Example

From-To sums and From/To ratio

To: 1 2 3 4 From From/To

sums ratio
From: 1 0 5 0 25 30 0.60

2 30 0 0 15 45 1.0

3 10 40 0 0 50

4 10 0 0 0 10 0.25

3
Hollier Method 2 Example
In case of tie in Hollier 2 method:
The machine with the higher From value is placed ahead of the
machine with lower value
The result from 1 and 2 methods are not always same
Performance measures:

Percentage of in-sequence moves: 95/135 = 70.4%

Percentage of backtracking moves: 15/135 = 11.1%

Machine Cell Design

Composite Part Concept
A hypothetical part which includes all of the design and manufacturing
attributes of the part family
An individual part in the family will have some of the features that
characterize the family but not all of them

Machine Cell Design
Type of Machine Cells: GT cells can be configured as
Single machine cell (type I M)

Group machine cell with manual/semi integrated handling (type II M)

Flexible manufacturing system (type II A)
