Mutual Communication: You are ALWAYS welcome to contact me any time by email.

Course Motivation: This course is for mechanical engineers to learn about in-depth ordinary
differential equations (ODEs) and partial differential equations (PDEs) widely employed
in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Furthermore, Vector Calculus will be also
covered in this course. This course is not just like a course in calculus or differential
equations.

Course Objectives: The students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge of the material
covered in this Advanced Engineering Mathematics course through their mastery of the
following course objectives. Through the study of this material the student will be able to:

1. Be familiar with Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE) with ME-EM Applications

Review of Ordinary Differential Equations
1st order ODEs
Linear ODEs of Higher Order
Laplace Transform
Differential Equations with Variable Coefficients

2. Comprehensively apply Vectors, Matrices, and Vector Calculus into ME Applications

Vectors
Matrices
Tensor Notations
Vector Calculus
Advanced Engineering Mathematics MEEM 5800 CK Choi

3. Be familiar with PDE Problems with ME-EM Applications

Orthogonal Functions and Fourier Series
Boundary-value Problems in rectangular coordinates
Integral Transform Method

Academic Integrity

Intentional, unauthorized use of any study aids, equipment, or anothers work on an

academic exercise is cheating. 1 Knowingly allowing or helping another individual to
plagiarize, cheat, or fabricate information also falls under academic dishonesty and will be
treated the same as cheating. You can explore the internet to gather information on topics
related to homework. However, it is not allowed not to solicit solutions to homework
problems, exams, or projects from the internet. Soliciting or searching for specific solutions to
assignments is not permissible. Copying from the solution manual to the textbook will be
treated as plagiarism and cheating. Academic dishonesty is a serious violation of University
Policy and will be dealt with accordingly. Any questions regarding permissible
collaborations or information sources should be brought to me for clarification.

MTU complies with all federal and state laws and regulations regarding discrimination,
including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). If you have a disability and need
a reasonable accommodation for equal access to education or services at MTU, please call the
Associate Dean of Students at 487-2212. For other concerns about discrimination, you may

Course Policies and Recommendations

1. Questions are welcomed, encouraged, and noticed

2. Homework should be complete, organized, and professional. Write down all equations
used to arrive at the answer. Show your work for all steps. Incomplete problems or those
appearing to just copy the answer will receive zero points for that problem. Solutions
manuals may not be used to solve homework problems. No late homework will be
accepted.
3. Exams are in-class ones.
4. Anyone caught cheating will be turned into academic affairs.

University Policies
Academic regulations and procedures are governed by University policy. Academic dishonesty
cases will be handled in accordance with the Universitys policies. If you have a disability that
could affect your performance in this class or that requires an accommodation under the
Americans with Disabilities Act, please see me as soon as possible so that we can make
appropriate arrangements. The Affirmative Action Office has asked that you be made aware of
the following:

Michigan Tech complies with all federal and state laws and regulations regarding
discrimination, including the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. If you have a disability
and need a reasonable accommodation for equal access to education or services at Michigan
Tech, please call the Dean of Students Office at 487-2212. For other concerns about
