April

Black History Month performance. This year, the students directed 6th-10thSenior Trip

highlighting contributions of African Americans to a variety of fields.

The performance began with singing Lift Every Voice and Sing as 17thNo School

school students going on a field trip to a history museum. While 21st
there, the exhibits come to life to explain major events that affected 1/2 Day students
African Americans including the Tuskegee syphilis experiment during
World War II. The performance also included a scene that Sophomore Cotillion
demonstrated the feelings many people experience with police
during traffic stops. Throughout the play, there were numerous
dance routines which were also choreographed by the students. The May
performance was a visually stunning as well as educational. It was

Renaissance Comes to
PHS

Students in our World History classes celebrated the Renaissance by walk-

ing in Michelangelos shoes. Coincidentally corresponding with his birthday,
students carved their own artwork into bars of soap realizing just how hard
it is to chisel out perfection like he once did. Students were also able to par-
take in a simulation of Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel. Many stu-
dents realized very quickly that this was no cake walk! Laying under a desk
as their chapel ceiling, students had to hold their papers up and sketch out
different scenes. Activities like this and many more within our history depart-
ment give students the opportunity to bring history to life. While Michelange-
lo might seem like a Ninja Turtle to some, to our students he was a man of
great talent that they learned to appreciate much more through these activi-
ties. Stop by the back 100 wing and see what all the fuss is about in our

Reformation Students in our World History classes kicked off the

celebration the 500th anniversary of Martin Luthers
95 Theses in style by reforming
Pennsauken. Motivated to use the means that Lu-
ther did, students identified areas they wished to
improve within the Pennsauken community. In
groups they worked together to identify what they
wanted to change and how they were going to
change it. Then, they were able to present their
case to staff members that volunteered their time to
stop by and provide feedback for the stu-
dents. Finally, students were encouraged to take
their plans to the board of education meeting on
March 30th and township committee meeting on
April 5th. Topics varied from things like the hot item
of school lunches to stadium lights, the cleaning up
local parks, and the start up of another municipal
pool where Meadowbrook Swim Club was once lo-
cated. Each group had thorough plans including ex-
amples from other public schools in New Jersey,
prices of such items, and old board meeting
minutes of Pennsauken doing these things in the
past. Together our students pushed for change.
While the project might be over in the classroom,
the conversation has merely just begun. Share
your ideas with us using the social media hashtag
#ReformPennsauken and be a part of the change!

Art students and our Veterans

The Studio Art students participated in a project called Hometown Heroes. The project started by
Fran Bennett connected the high school students with local veterans through the visual arts. On
Tuesday, February 14th the veterans and students came together for one purpose- to share their
amazing stories. The students interviewed the veterans about their time in the military and what is
was like to serve their country. Each student was partnered with an adult and had the opportunity
to ask questions, view photos, and share feelings about moments that changed their life forever.
Veterans shared their views and memories with everyone in the library. It was a very informative
and moving afternoon. The students brainstormed ideas of how to visually illustrate their stories.
They created a range of work from paintings to pencil renderings. When the students were finished
there was an artist's reception and exhibit on March 23rd for the veterans and their families. Each
artwork was accompanied with a description and an artist's statement. During the exhibit, the
veterans viewed a 3 word video created by the students, listened to a beautiful song performed by
Hannah Pietzsch, and were presented the artwork by each student as a token of gratitude. It was a
very uplifting and memorable day for everyone. Mrs. Bennett is so proud of her students for their
sincerity with the veterans and dedication to making the artwork special for each person. . The art
will be given to each veteran as a token of gratitude for their accomplishments and
dedication. Mrs. Bennett is so proud of her students for their sincerity with the veterans and
dedication to making the artwork special for each person. The art exhibit will be held in the library
on Thursday, March 16th.
