Client Meeting Notes

Misc.

The Pixels are a music band/group.

I have already created an animated web banner for this band.
I will now create promotional material.
I will design three storyboards.
I must print the graphics in the correct size.
Quality is essential.

Logo

I have already created a logo for The Pixels in a previous assignment.

I can either use the logo I have already created or create a brand new one.

A3 Poster

When creating my A3 I must check the size of the poster.

Must include logo.
Must include tour dates and venues.

CD Cover

When creating my CD Cover I must check the size of the cover.

Must include logo.
Must include song titles.
Must include usual CD information
Design; Front, Back

Software

To create my graphics;
I could use Photoshop.
I could use Paint.
I could use Adobe Illustrator, but I have no up to date training with it.
Scenario
The Pixels are a Manchester based band who has had a reasonably successful career in and
around the local Manchester music scene for the last five years. They have now been picked
up by and offered a deal from a record company.

You have already created an animated web banner but now you have
been commissioned to design and create a range of
promotional materials; a logo, A3 poster and CD cover designed
to launch them into a national and possibly international
audience and market place.

You have been given the opportunity to work with the

management company to negotiate a brief, develop a brief and promote the band.

Establish Concept
The Pixels are a Manchester based band who has had a reasonably successful career in and
around the local Manchester music scene for the last five years. They have now been picked
up by and offered a deal from a record company.

To help me establish a concept I will research into 3 different bands of the same genre below
and look at the different images and styles that they use for themselves.

State Champs

State Champs is an American pop punk band from Albany, New York, formed in 2010. They
are currently signed to Pure Noise Records and have released three EPs and two full-length
albums. They released an acoustic EP titled The Acoustic Things in October 2014 and their
second full-length album Around the World and Back one year later, in October 2015. Their
2013 full-length, The Finer Things, debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers
Albums chart.

Both State Champs album covers have a completely different style, which is not common
with a band that has its own theme. The reason behind the different album covers could be
that the type of image that particular album is trying to portray is different.
The Finer Things is the State Champs debut album; this album
cover is a simple edited picture (which is most album covers). I feel
this album cover gives a sort of indie vibe therefore putting across
an image that isnt what the band is going for. The front of this
album cover contains the name of the band and the name of the
album. When this album was
released the State Champs did not
have an official logo yet, that is why there is no logo on this
album cover.

The State Champs second alum (Around the World and Back)
has a completely design as it has a background image and a
main centered image. The background image for this album
cover looks like a sort of tattoo or doodles. The main image
however looks a lot like it could be some sort of logo. The logo
is a simpler graphic of what looks like a globe, looking closer at the globe I can see there
seems to be a letter S and C which stands for State Champs. This graphic could be used
as a logo for this band in the future.

New Found Glory

New Found Glory (formerly A New Found Glory) is an American rock band from Coral
Springs, Florida, formed in 1997. Emerging as part of the second wave of pop punk in the
late 1990s, music critics consider them a key pioneer of the genre. Labelled the "godfathers
of pop punk", AllMusic credits them for "practically serving alongside the work of Blink-182
as the blueprint to the entire genre for the early 2000s. Also, renowned for their energetic
live performances, the band has garnered a cult following since their inception.
Not Without a Fight is New Found Glorys sixth album. The cover
for this album is themed off of what seems to be an old American
war, this is because of the soldiers and the eagle on the cover. This
album cover has a drawn/painted image effect to it like an old
fashioned 1900s poster. New Found Glory also doesnt have a
specific logo that is placed on the album covers. Each of their album
covers has the name of the band on it but each album
cover is completely different, the covers all include the name of the
band but each cover has a different font for the name, the font of the
name reflects each album covers them like how on this album cover
the name of the band has a font that looks like a sort of printed font
that would have been printed or engraved onto metal.

New Found Glorys most recent album Resurrection has a

completely different style to their other albums it has a similar design to the State Champs
second album in the way that it has a background colour and a main centered image. This
album cover also includes an image that could end up becoming a logo also. The font for the
name of the band on this cover has a tattoo style to it.

5 Seconds of Summer

5 Seconds of Summer are an Australian rock band from Sydney that formed in 2011. The
group were originally YouTube celebrities, posting videos of themselves covering songs from
various artists during 2011 and early 2012. They rose to international
fame while touring with One Direction on the Take Me Home Tour.
The group have been referred to as a pop punk band in the media,
though the members reject this description, claiming that they
desire to play more music than just pop punk.

5 Seconds of Summers debut album cover has a very messy style to

it. It has something different than the rest of the album covers which is a
picture of the actual band. This album cover also has a doodle style to it with the graffiti on
the background and across the band. Their name and band logo are at the top of the cover.

Sounds Good Feels Good is their second album. This album cover has the same doodle
style to it with the graffiti and doodles in the background. This cover has a much smaller
image of the band on it and the title of the album is much bigger. The band logo doesnt
actually appear on this album cover even though it is their official logo. On both of their
album covers the font for the band name, a graffiti stencil, is exactly
the same this allows people to see that both albums are from the
same band a lot easier.

My Concept

After researching into these 3 bands and their different album covers I will base my concept
off of the 5 Seconds of Summer album covers, my graphics will have a grafitti style to them,
I will have a white brick wall as my background and have the content on my album cover
look like it has been spray painted on. I will be using the same design for my logo that I did
for Unit 65.

Select Format
To help me select my format for my A3 poster and CD there are a few things that I must
include, below is a list of things I need to include for each graphic.

CD

Fully completed logo

Images / Images of band
Track list
Parental Advisory (If necessary)
Publisher information
Label information
Barcode
Year of release
Any necessary legal symbols

A3 Poster

Fully completed logo

Images / Images of band
Tour dates
Tour venues
Website
Band social information

If I manage to include all these things in my graphics and make sure that the layout and
design of them are high quality then each graphic should look highly professional and get
me a good grade. To make sure the content looks high quality I will need to see that the
design of each graphic is very detailed. The colours need to stand out and be eye catching. I
also need to think about readability whilst designing my graphics so that my poster and cd
cover are clear to the audience.

Nature of Content
Looking in detail at the graphics, my CD cover will include the list above. My logo is the
most important part that should be included in this graphic and on my A3 poster. The
reason for this is that a logo is a way to identify most products and companies as every
single logo you see will be completely different and
specifically designed to that a particular
product/company like Coca-Cola or Nandos. My
logo will be tailored in a way that it will fit the
theme of the band and will be
memorable so that people can identify the band easily. The logo I will be creating
is designed from the logo I created in Unit 65. The background of my
CD cover and A3 poster will be a white brick wall, I have chosen to use the
same background so that both graphics link together which would help
with publicity. The logo on my CD cover will be in the
center and have a spray paint effect on it. I will
feature the tracklist of the album and all of the legal information on the back. My A3 poster
will have the tour venues and dates on it that will look like they have been spray painted
through a stencil.

Consideration of Audience Usage

To interest my audience I will have to take into account the brief I have been given. The
brief states that The Pixels have been in the music scene for 5 years which means that the
band will already have an audience. To keep that audience interested I will need to link all
of my graphics so that they give good publicity to the band. Need to make sure that when
im creating my A3 poster I put all of the relevant information about their tour on it in a
clear font so that everyone can read it. I also need to make sure that all of my graphics look
professional and high quality so that it can attract more people to the band. My CD cover
will contain the bands logo in the center so its highly visible. As the band has been in the
music scene for 5 years there will already be people that can recognise the logo, as they will
recognise the logo it can attract them to buy the album as it is new.

Layout Design

Designing my storyboards will allow me

to figure out the best possible way I can
put my graphics together. As I
12 cm 12 cm
created my logo in Unit 65 I do not
need to redesign my logo I will just redo
my storyboard for it. When I came up
12.5 cm 14 cm
with my logo I went with a simple design as
most logos you see arent to complex as the more complex the logo is the harder it is to
recognise. When it comes to creating my logo the logo itself was originally going to be
pixelated to fit in with the name of the band I have decided that im going to make the logo
graphic pixelated but when I place the logo onto the CD cover and poster I will give it an
effect as if it had been spray painted on. On the back of my CD cover I will put the track list
down the left hand side and the legal information will go in the bottom right corner as that
is where it is on most CDs. On my poster I will put the tour venues and dates down the
middle of the page so that they are center for people to see. The band name will be in a bold
font at the top of the poster so that people know which band it is advertising. Looking into
the dimensions that I must make my CD cover I need to look into what normal CD cover
dimensions are so I can use the same dimensions for my graphic. Most CD cover dimensions
are actually 12.5cm x 12cm (front cover) and 14cm x 12cm (back cover and spine). I will
need to open my blank canvases with these dimensions so that I can create my CD covers to
the actual size of a normal CD cover.
Input and Manipulation of Images
I will be using Photoshop to create all of my graphics as that is
an advanced graphics editor that can produce high quality
images. To create my logo I will use the circle and line tool then I
will use the modify tool to pixelate the image. Once my logo is
created I will need to export it as a JPEG or PNG so that I can
then open it up onto a new document to be able to create my CD
cover and poster. To create these two graphics, I will need to use
a mixture of tools from the text tool, paint brush tool and the
modify tool. Once I have finished my graphics I will export them as JPEGs so that they are
the highest quality possible.

Selection of Style and Tone

Selecting the style of my graphics came about
while I was researching into different rock
bands. The style im going with is a sort of
messy graffiti style. I will create my logo so
that it looks like somebody has spray
painted it on the wall. The font for the
band name will look like it has been
stenciled over the logo. The tone of my graphics will be quiet loud as that is the sort of
image I want to portray for the band because they are a rock band. To obtain this image I
will have big bold writing and graphics within my poster and CD cover. The example to the
right is the logo for the band Fall Out Boy, they have a similar messy style to them like my
graphics will.

Consideration of Limitations and Advantages of Format

My logo will be exported as a PNG. A PNG has a transparent background; this will allow
me to import the logo onto another graphic without it having a background on it for me to
worry about. My CD cover and A3 poster will be exported in JPEG format; this will allow
me to print them off in a very high quality. There isnt many limitations for using a JPEG
as they can be used for lots of different things like being put on a website.
Deadlines and Schedules
To make sure I
stick to my
deadlines and
get my
graphics finished in time I will use my
ILP to show me what I need to do in
that lesson. I will give myself 2 lesson
to create one graphic therefore I will
have completed assignment 3 by the
deadline.

Storyboards
Below are my storyboards. Each storyboard shows exactly what is going to be on them and
where everything will go. In the side bar I have written information about each storyboard
in detail about what colours will be used and why it has been design like it has.
