The house is extremely important in the history of Irish
architecture as it was the first Palladian building in the
country.
His design was inspired by Italian town houses or
palazzos of the Rennaissance.
He is responsible for the design of the main block/front
faade.
Galilei, however, did not stay to finish the work on the
house and the job was taken over by Edward Lovett
Pearce, who was responsible for the design of the
entrance hall and it was he who added the colonnades
and terminating pavillions.

Teaching/Learning Strategies:
Students will be brought on a field trip to Dublin where they will view both
Castletown House and The House of Parliament-The Casino at Marino is fully booked
so students will not be able to view. (Unsure if I can go on the trip)
Provide students with a booklet which they will use a reference point throughout the
course of the four lessons. This will save students from taking notes and they can
underline key points as we move through the 4 lessons.
Students will be taken through a series of 2 powerpoint presentations as it has been
requested that Castletown house must be covered in detail following on with the
Casino at Marino.
The 1st lesson will be an introduction to Palladianism following with Castletown
House. There will be questioning and discussion throughout the course of the lesson
as students will have returned from their trip and I will get a sense of what they have
learned. There will be significant wait time for questioning.
The 2nd lesson will be a follow on lesson where students will continue to learn about
Castletown house but we will also cover a Palladian public building specifically the
Irish House of Parliament. Students will be shown a short video on the interior of
Castletown house which will be re-watched for homework as well as filling in a
response work sheet to the video.
In the 3rd lesson students will be introduced to Neo-Classicism. Firstly we will run
through a short compare and contrast session where we will talk about the
differences between a Palladian building and a Neo-Classical building. We will start
off with Florence Court and Castle Coole in Co. Fermanagh the reason being that
students will be able to recognise the differences in any Palladian or Neo-Classical
building not just Castletown House and The Casino at Marino. We will then proceed
to go through The Casino at Marino in detail. The students will answer a worksheet
sheet for homework to reinforce learning.
The 4th lesson will consist of a short questions test based on Palladianism/Castletown
house and Neo-Classicism/The Casino at Marino.

Use of Digital Media:

Use of laptop and overhead projector

Differentiation:
Firstly students will be brought to Dublin to see the various buildings in person. The powerpoint presentations
will be reinforced with a booklet which students can refer to during the lessons. Questioning and discussion
will help the weaker student to understand the content in more detail. The Castletown house video will also
reinforce learning. The worksheets will also help the weaker student to identify the key content. The compare
and contrast session will help the weaker student to identify that the content can be used over a broad
spectrum.
