1. If the pressure at a point in the ocean is 60 kPa, what is the pressure 27 meters below this point?

Solution:
The difference in pressure between any two points in a liquid is p 2 p1 = h
p2 = p1 + h
= 60 + (9.81x1.03)(27)
p2 = 332.82 kPa

2. An open tank contains 5.8 m of water covered with 3.2 m of kerosene ( = 8 kN/m 3). Find the
pressure at the interface and at the bottom of the tank.

Solution:
a. Pressure at the interface
p A = kh k
= (8)(3.2)
pA = 25.6 kPa
b. Pressure at the bottom
pB = h
= whw + khk
= 9.81 (5.8) + 8 (3.2)
pB = 82.498 kPa

3. A hydraulic press contains 30 ft3 of water. The areas of the small and large pistons are in 2 and 100
in2, respectively. How much total travel will the small piston be obliged to make, following the
application to it a force of 100 lb., if the large piston moves a distance of 0.5 in.? Volume modulus of
elasticity of water is K = 300,000 psi.

Solution:
A1 = 0.25 in2
A2 = 100 in2

V1 = A1h
V1 =
V1 = 0.00174 h ft3

V2 = A2h2
V2 = = 0.0289 ft3
*Volume of modulus of elasticity of water =
k=

P=
P = 400 psi

V = V1 V2
V = 0.00174 h 0.0289
V = 30 ft3
V =
V = = 0.04 ft3
V = V1 V2
0.04 = 0.00174 h 0.0289
h = 39.6 ft

4. Determine the value of y in the manometer shown in the figure

Solution:
Summing-up pressure head from A to B in meters of water
+ 1.5 y(13.6) =
y(13.6) =
Where pB = 0
y = 0.324 m

5. For the manometer setup shown, determine the difference in pressure between A and B
Solution:
x + -.68 = y + 1.7
x y = 1.02 m -- Eq. (1)
Sum-up pressure head from A to B in meters of water;

-- Eq. (2)
Substitute x-y = 1.02 in Eq. (1) to Eq. (2):

= 15.68 kPa

6. A 30 m long dam retains 9 m of water as shown in the figure. Find the total resultant force acting on
the dam and the location of the center of pressure from the bottom.

Solution:
F = hcgA
F = 9.81 (4.5)[(30)(10.392)]
F = 13,763 kN
e=

e=
e = 1.732 m
y = (10.392) 1.732
y = 3.464 m
or
y = 1/3 (10.392) = 3.464 m
7. In the figure shown, determine the horizontal and vertical components of the total force acting on
the cylinder per m of its length.

Solution:
FH = = hcgA
FH = 9.81(6.12)[(4.24)(1)]
FH = 254.56 kN
FV = Vshaded
Vshaded =(Asemicircle + Atrapezoid) x 1
=[ (4.24)] (1)
3
Vshaded = 40.1 m
FV = 9.81 (40.1)
FV = 393.38 kN
