Casa Mila, Barcelona, Spain: Formative with aesthetics

Simple and formational are the only expressions which can describe Casa Mil- an
architecturally tectonic building which after so many years is still standing strong with the same
thrill and blush. Instructed by Roser Segimon and Pere Mil in 1906, Casa Mil has established
in 1912 lead by Catalan architect Antoni Gaud in Barcelona, Spain. At that time it was a
controversial project due to its smooth stone faade and deviant balconies made by wrought iron.
Those parts were designed by Josep Maria Jujol. Also known as La Pedera, the quarry, its design
was influenced by the version of Spain in Art Nouveau. UNESCO has declared Casa Mil a
World Heritage Site in 1984. Casa Mila has started as a Miracle home but currently it is the
headquarter of Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation which controls the activities, exhibitions and
public visit in Casa Mil.

The design of Casa Mil highly innovative as it is divided into skin and structure. It
comprised of stone fronts and columns which are self-supported and the floors are free from the
walls consist of load bearing. Casa Mil essentially contains- attic, four upper floors, gallery,
ground floor and basement. Each of the part utilize in one way or the other. The upper floor is
given in rent, mezzanine is for entry, main floors are dedicated to Mils and ground floor act as a
garage. The building is surrounded with two interior arcades designed as eight. Its terrace is
widely popular to have sculpture terrace. It accommodates chimneys, fans, skylights and
emergency stairs. The main material in the construction was concrete and glass. The faade of
the building is made of limestone block whose curve is massive and appearance is that of
organic. Above the faade there is a curvaceous mass with humanistic sculpture. Those structures
have an aesthetic expressiveness and fluid dynamics of their own. What makes Casa Mil iconic
is its organic and tectonic architecture.
