Autumn 2017 Sign 9

A Basic BSL Course Mondays | September 11th - October 23rd | 7.30 9pm
Welcome to 7 FREE sessions of basic BSL,
with refreshments (9 hours of tuition).
Groups of up to 15 will be led by Chris Steele and Shirley
Whiteside, experienced tutors who are themselves deaf.
Those who have previously attended Sign 9 and want
to recap will be in a group led by June Steele. Everyone
will get 1:1 support from deaf and hearing members of
Fulwood Free Methodist Church.
The aim of the course is three-fold:
1. To give you confidence to engage in basic
sign communication
2. To help you become deaf aware
3. To encourage you to continue learning BSL
in the future

To sign up or for information, email general@fulwoodfmc.net , subject heading Sign 9.

What is BSL? - Sign language is a visual means of communicating by gestures, facial expression and
body-language. It is used mainly by people who are deaf or have hearing impairments. BSL has its own
grammatical structure and syntax. It is not strongly related to spoken English. In 2003, BSL was recognised
by the UK government as an official minority language. By 2011, BSL had become the preferred language of
over 145,000 people within the UK. Sign language is not a worldwide universal language - other countries
have their own sign languages. Throughout Britain, there are many regional variations in sign language, (as
there are varieties of spoken accents and colloquialisms.)

Sign Supported English (SSE) This form of sign language uses the same signs as BSL, but the signs are
used in the same order as spoken English. In our church, our signers/interpreters tend to use SSE for
signing songs, so that those who are deaf can enjoy signing together with the same pace and feeling as
those around them.

Signers Our church has a team

of signers, some are qualified
interpreters, others have learnt BSL
later in life to communicate with the
growing number of people who are deaf
in the congregation. These volunteers/
friends are available for church services
and other church-run events.

Deafway - For many years we have

been privileged to serve members
of Deafway, and their staff. After
morning services we enjoy a chat over
coffee and biscuits where everyone is
relaxed and equally involved in the
church community.

All women aged 16 and over are welcome for coffee and dessert at Fulwood Free
Methodist Church, Lightfoot Lane. Our speaker is from City Hearts, an organisation
which supports those affected by modern day slavery, sexual exploitation, all
manner of abuse, homelessness and trauma.
Human Trafficking is the movement of a person from one place to another into
conditions of exploitation, using deception, coercion, the abuse of power or the abuse
of someones vulnerability. It affects men, women and children. www.cityhearts.co.uk

City Hearts founder, Jenny Gilpin, says, I realised I had to stop letting my own [difficult]
history affect me. I was in danger of it making me feel worthless. I began to think
about others who were falling into that trap and I wanted to help them. A decade
later, over 3500 vulnerable men, women and children have been welcomed into City
Hearts. Through safehouses, interventions, outreach and drop-in programmes, City
Hearts offers dignity, strength and love to those in need because Every Person Matters.

Praying
forREAL
People ask, Does prayer work?
as if it is some kind of magic
trick that you have to get right.
Or is it just a habit to make
you feel good, on a level with

believes that prayer is of far
greater value than any trick or
a habit. Here he shares a few
