When I interview someone for Heart
magazine, Im aware that 1000 words can
never do justice to the emotion and the truth
they want to express. It takes courage to share
your story in black and white, so I double-
check every detail. It must be right! Despite
tough experiences - from earthquakes and
war to debt or eating disorders - Ive met
people who are extraordinarily resilient, On Tuesday 26th January
who react with thankfulness, goodness, 2016 Bob and Helena Elliot,
forgiveness, and faith. All the stories,

do we find goodness and how do we keep
hold of it? We start by making good choices:

What is BSL? - Sign language is a visual means of communicating by gestures, facial expression and
body-language. It is used mainly by people who are deaf or have hearing impairments. BSL has its own
grammatical structure and syntax. It is not strongly related to spoken English. In 2003, BSL was recognised
by the UK government as an official minority language. By 2011, BSL had become the preferred language of
over 145,000 people within the UK. Sign language is not a worldwide universal language - other countries
have their own sign languages. Throughout Britain, there are many regional variations in sign language, (as
there are varieties of spoken accents and colloquialisms.)
Sign Supported English (SSE) This form of sign language uses the same signs as BSL, but the signs are
used in the same order as spoken English. In our church, our signers/interpreters tend to use SSE for
signing songs, so that those who are deaf can enjoy signing together with the same pace and feeling as
those around them.

City Hearts founder, Jenny Gilpin, says, I realised I had to stop letting my own [difficult]
history affect me. I was in danger of it making me feel worthless. I began to think
about others who were falling into that trap and I wanted to help them. A decade
later, over 3500 vulnerable men, women and children have been welcomed into City
Hearts. Through safehouses, interventions, outreach and drop-in programmes, City
Hearts offers dignity, strength and love to those in need because Every Person Matters.
Margaret and Eileen are Mirror Twins - a subset of identical twins. Margaret explains; We fold our arms and cross
our legs in the opposite way. Our feet are the same size, but my left foot is slightly bigger than my right, and Eileens
is vice-versa. In rare cases (but not ours) the internal organs are on the opposite side to each other. We both have
very thick hair (I always think it is double the amount!) When we were children the nit nurse said, Youve got
1000 hairs per square inch too many! And we both have double crowns. We were brought up separately, but we
instinctively understand each other and enjoy holidays together.

Praying
forREAL
People ask, Does prayer work?
as if it is some kind of magic
trick that you have to get right.
Or is it just a habit to make
you feel good, on a level with
cleaning your teeth? Charles
Wall, retired Head of Technology
at Archbishop Temple School,
believes that prayer is of far
greater value than any trick or
a habit. Here he shares a few
personal snapshots on prayer.
