Affixes

Topic: Affixes

Standards: CCSS. ELA-Literacy. RF.4.3

Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Objective: Students will be able to create prefixes and suffixes from root words with 4 out of the
5 correct. They will do this independently by choosing 5 roots words of their own choice and
either turning it into a prefix or a suffix.

Assessment Plan: At the beginning of the lesson I will do an assessment to see where my
students are at with understanding unaccented final syllables. They will do a short worksheet
and then I will grade it after the lesson to know what I need to focus on for next time.

Materials Needed: 3 unaccented final syllables worksheet. Pencils, one whiteboard and one
whiteboard marker. Scrabble letters.

Gain attention/ Recall prior knowledge: The students will do a one sided worksheet that is on
unaccented final syllables.

Teach/ Model:
1. Say, a prefix is a set of letters that comes before a root word. A suffix is a set of letters
that comes after a root word. They change the meaning of the word that they are
attached to.
2. Write the an example of a prefix on the whiteboard. Nutrition, Malnutrition. Ask the
students if they know what malnutrition means. If they don't know what it means, explain
that malnutrition is when someone doesnt get the nutrients from food that they need to
get.
3. Go over some more prefixes with them and then go over some suffixes.
Loyal, disloyal
Meter, perimeter
Circumfer, ence
Colored, Multicolored
Art, artist
Guide: Give the students scrabble pieces and have them create words that you read to them.
Read the first part of the word and then have them come up with their own ideas on what prefix
or suffix they would add to the word. Give them three words .

Play- player
Move-movement
like-likeness

Independent Practice: Have the students create 5 words with the scrabble letters that have a
prefix or a suffix.

Differentiation: Make sure to set firm limits with Logan. Today keep a whiteboard of points,
teacher points or students points. Teacher gets points if the students misbehave, students get
points if they are good. If the students win they can either spell words like a robot or shoot the
basketball. If Logan gives you a hard time about the worksheet at the beginning of the lesson,
do the worksheet at the end of the lesson and jump into the lesson.

Closure: The students will go over to the keva for for a group lesson.
