Grants & Foundations Web Quest: The V Foundation for Cancer Research

Using the V Foundation website www.jimmyv.org, complete the following. You can use
bulleted lists for everything except #1, which states that you must write a GOOD high
school level paragraph.

1. Describe the purpose of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Write a

GOOD high school level paragraph. The V Foundations mission has always
been a focused one: to save lives by finding cures for cancer. Since
awarding the first grant in 1994, The V Foundation has funded hundreds of
grants to the brightest physicians and scientists as they pioneer
techniques to make breakthroughs in cancer research.

2. Under the Research tab, read about the Funding Process. Describe how
the funding process was established and who is eligible to receive funding from
the V Foundation. Jim Valvanos dream and The V Foundations mission of
finding a cure for cancer can best be accomplished through funding
essential cancer research. Since the Foundations inception, research
projects have been conducted by some of the brightest young scientists in
laboratories conducting basic cancer research. The recipients of these two-
year, $200,000 grants are designated V Scholars. Our V Scholar Grant
provides the essential funds to support young tenure-track faculty as they
begin their cancer research career, allowing the V Scholar to decide how
best to use these funds in his or her research project.

3. Under the same tab, what are the 3 research grants available from the V
Foundation? Pick one and describe it in detail. The V Foundation awards three
types of grants: The V Scholar Grant, The V Foundation Grants in
Translational Cancer Research and Designated Grants.
