Log of Activities
The day started with a meeting that lasted 45mins discussing what was done the day before and
established the program for today. From there I went with Mr. Moffo to see what the
maintenance team was doing. From there we went to the engineering team working on the design
phase of the project. And from there to the logistics department. He had a brief meeting with
them to check on how far they had gone in getting the equipment he requested for the project.
After this, he answered some of my questions while doing some work on his computer. There
was a two-hour long break from 12:00 14:00 pm. After the break, he had a client meeting. He
went to their office to meet the project manager and discuss the ongoing project. During this
time, He asked me to go to all the teams and observe what they do. On return from his meeting,
he gave me a rundown of how the meeting went without going into the details of what was
discussed.

Interview
How did you get to where you are? Educational background and degrees
Mr Moffo studied Electronic Engineering at Universite Fotso Victor till 1998. Worked with a
telecoms company for 3 years after which he quit and joined schlumberger because he really
wanted to work for a multinational. He did a selection test and was successful. He was more
interested in working in the IT or electronics department. They were 300 to take the test and 5
were selected. From his test results, he was assigned to the well test department so he started
working there as Field Specialist Trainee (grade 7) and had a fix step program. The company has
a career plan that requires you to perform certain tasks and eventual promotions in a period of
18months or a year. His mentor reviewed his progress and he was promoted to the next level to
where he is now. Took him 7 years to get to the manager position. He was selected for the
Deepwater training and after he completed this training he became a DeepWater and special
projects supervisor(grade 12) which lasted five years.
Mr Moffo has worked in many African and European countries. His daily schedule varies and
depends on if hes working onshore or offshore. He typically starts a regular working day by
checking his email, meeting with subordinates in the morning to prepare the day. In the case
where hes working on an offshore project, his itinerary changes a little. At the very beginning of
the project, he organises daily meetings with his team for the said project. He must prepare the
equipment for the base and set up a support and logistics team in the office. He also must
organise several meetings with their current client at their office or through conference calls. He
updates the clients on how hes going to carry out the project. He organises transportation for the
equipment and the team to the offshore base and gets everyone there ahead of him. He can either
supervise the offshore activities onshore or offshore depending on what the situation demands.
Challenges faced in the job. What is the hardest part of the job?
The most challenging part is mostly his personal life since hes mostly away from his family.
Hes always on the move, working with different teams in a different culture. So adjusting is
difficult sometimes
Most interesting aspects of the job.
He constantly must face different challenges which helps build his character. Hes always loved
challenges because it pushes him to find new ways to handle the situation at hand. Also he finds
that his job is not monotonous because he never works in the same place for too long.
How do you manage your time and people?
Hes a very punctual and time conscious person. So he has no problems managing his time and
the people that work with him.
Are you open to your subordinates coming to you in case of any difficulties?
He uses a software known as Project Manager Software to manage and organise his projects.
He delegates tasks to his subordinates and follows up as they are working. He lets them know
that they can always come and ask questions in case of any difficulties faced.

Reflection
I learnt that a good manager doesnt hover over his employees after giving them
instructions on what to do. He lets them put their input an guide them to achieve their full
potential.
The following competences are very important in my managers line of work.
Inspiring Captain
Flexibility
Bridge builder
Wordsmith
Architect of strengths
Flexibility is the main competence above I see as one of my strengths. I have proven to
myself several times that I can easily adapt to most situations no matter how unrealistic
they may seem. I am also a good wordsmith.
I need to work on being a bridge builder, an inspiring captain and Architect of strengths.
Most of these competencies are related to being social and Im naturally an introvert. I
need to start being more sociable, outgoing and practice patience with people no matter
how irritated I may get with their inability to understand certain things.
I think my IBM programme can superficially prepare for the function observed. I say this
because, my manager had to go through a certain career path designed for him based on
what he achieved in each level. The IBM program can prepare me for such a function by
teaching me how to constantly do presentations and collaborate with people out of my
comfort zone. After almost a year of doing this program, I can confidently say that the
IBM program is already doing this for me.
