Learning Sequence,

Foldable radio, Year 10.

Phase 1: Introduction and task,
Students will be supplied a digital task sheet that states a communication problem
for people in the aftermath of natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Student
will need to collaborate ideas and solutions to connect local councils too people
without communication resources. The solution must encompass a radio broadcast
to inform people of shelter, food and awareness of support. The solution must be
compatible for various nationalities. To collaborate ideas and reflections the
students will login into www.edmodo.com and select correct discussion group using
supplied password to access teachers topic questions. Areas for discussion will be:

Parts needed for radio, (investigation, ACTDEK046) (Tuner, power supply, battery,
speaker, volume, casing, storage)
Design, shape and features, (Critical and creative thinking, ACTDEK040)
(Electronic material sizes, design around electronic, basic shape, hinges)
Material comparisons, (ACTDEK046) (ACTDEP051) (Cardboard, Plywood,
Arcylic)
Drawing, measurements, AutoCad basics, (ACTDEK047) (ACTDEP052) (AutoCad
instruction)
Tooling, machines and function, (ACTDEK046) (Workshop tools, CNC machine &
operation)
Evaluate overall design and functionality, will this solution be functional
internationally? (ACTDEK040) (Complete personal evaluation document and
reference Edmodo collaborations)

Phase 2: Implement production,

Students will comment on Edmodo website when teacher instructs to do so during
stages throughout production process.

Connect electronic parts loosely and operate to create awareness of operation

and cabling connections.
Students can cut out structural overall sizes of material within workshop
environment. Workshop rules and expectations outlined including Personal
Safety Equipment (PPE).
AutoCad lessons, explicit teaching and functionality of system to draw design.
Include position of knobs (tuner and volume), speaker and cut out spaces for
solar panel.
Export AutoCad file as a dwg. file, upload to Expire 4.0 program can connect to
CNC machine. Expire will map tooling paths and control CNC machine.
Sand smooth cut marks, install hinges and assemble shell of radio
Fit radio components and test.
Phase 3: Commissioning and Reflection,

Students will operate radio and tune into local frequency. Once commissioning is
complete students will reflect on overall process using Edmodo within allocated
working group. Finally, students will improve the product process by collaborating
ideas on how to mass produce the radio.
