evaluate the root canal deviation after instrumentation using the rotatory system
removed by the instrumentation in the mesil and distal root canal walls and the
amount of dentine removed by the instrumentation in the mesial and distal root
canal walls was performed for the three thirds of the root. Fractures of the
31 first and second extracted mandibular and maxillary molars with root
angles ranging from 5° and 45° were selected for the study. In order to get
better CT images the root canals were cleaned with a modified vacuous pump
(FARIAS, 2000). A template was prepared with a plastic box to keep the teeth in
X
position. CT was performed before and after the instrumentation of the root
canals. After the first CT the teeth were examined, first by the researcher and
then by the supervisor with the aim at selecting the images where the exact
limits of the root canal could be precisely visualized on the three thirds. The
teeth were instrumented wrth the Crown Down Modified technique. The final CT
was taken and the images were obtained through sequential cuts in a cranio-
caudal direction. The images were and overlapped to carry out the
measurement of the mesial distal distance with the aid of a digital caliper.
With the method developed in this study it was possible to identify the
limits of the root canal in the CT images. The amount of dentine removed by the
instrumentation technique used was similar for mesial and distal root canal
walls. No deviation was observed in the three thirds of the root canal and the
original shape was maintained. One single instrument (Quantec #5 25/.06) was
instrumentation.
