Whatispoverty?Povertyismorethannothavingplacetocallhome.Povertyiswalking3.7
milestoget20litersofwaterfordailyuse.Povertyisyourchildhoodtakingplaceina
warzone.Povertyisyourlifespentwithoutfood,clothing,money,orevenmedicinetoheal
yourfataldiseases.IqbalMahasiiswellversedwiththesubject.Hisparentssoldhimto
payoffa$12debt.Iqbalspent6yearsfromtheageof4to10working12hoursaday
makingcarpets.Finallyattheageof10heescapedandstartedspeakingoutagainstchild
labor.PeopleinPakistanandallaroundtheworldlistenedtohim.Heevenvisitedaschool,
BroadMeadowsMiddleSchool,inMassachusetts.There,heinspiredmanychildrenby
sharinghisstoryandwhat
hewascurrentlydoing.
Somestudentswereso
motivatedbyhisstorythat
theystartedacharity.
Sadly,afewmonthslater,
afterhereturnedto
Pakistan,hewasmurdered
atthetenderageof12.To
betterunderstandpoverty
andIqbalsparents
situationwemustknow
whatputspeopleinextreme
poverty.Whichplacesin
theworldaremost
affected.?Whatotherbig
problemsispovertyfueling?
Andmostofall,whatisbeingdonetostopthishiddenepidemic?

othersituation.Thebankloansmoneytoanindividualsayafarmerwiththereceiver's
assets(farm)asacollateral.However,sometimestheinterestontheloanissohighthat
theyarentabletopayitoff.Thebankthenseizestheirassets.Withoutaplacetoliveor
landtofarmthepersonfallsintopoverty.Anexampleofthiscanbeseenwithrich
landlordsandIndianfarmers.Whenafarmerwhoownsanacreoflandneedsanimals,
tools,andseedstofarm.Hemay
gototherichestmanintown,
thelandlord,lookingforaloan.
Thelandlordsayshellloanhim
themoneyheneedstobuy
equipmentwithinterestandthe
manslandascollateral.The
farmeragreestotheloan.If
thefarmerhasayearwithout
rain,hewouldntbeabletopay
backtheloan.Theintereston
theloanwillmultiplyeachyear
thereafterandwhenthefarmerwouldfailtopayhimbacktheLandlordwouldseizethe
land,andthefarmerwouldgointopoverty.

LowPaidWorkandJoblessness

Regularworkisthemostfundamentalthingthathelpsyouattainnecessitiesinlife.
Sometimesapersondoesnthavetheskillsettoperformajoborothertimesthejob
isntavailable.Theeffectisthesame;thepersonisntabletosupporthimself,andthey
fallintopoverty.Othertimesapersonisabletogetajobbutthepayisverylow,working
onminimumwage.Tryastheymightevenextrapayforlongerhourswillnotsupportthe
personslivingstandard..Eventuallythepersononhisownwontbeabletosupport
himself,andwillfall,slowly,intopoverty.

PoliticalInstabilityandWar

Safety,security,stability,andeconomicsuccessarevitaltobeingaprosperouscountry
ornation.Politicalupheavalandwarwilldisruptthesecomponents.Withthedisarrayof
thesecomponents,itwillbedifficultforanationtoharnessnaturalresources,andno
amountofskilleachindividualcitizenpossesseswillnotallowthemtoworkunderasingle
force.Withgovernmentinstability,lawswillbepointlessandwillbeunabletoprotect
citizenrightsandproperty.Withoutpropergovernancepeoplewouldbediscouragedto
investsafelyintheeconomy.Aweakgovernmentwouldbeunabletoprotectitspeople
againstviolence.Warwoulddivertresourcesfromitscitizenstofighting.Thesefactors
weakenthenationandhindertheprogressofasociety.Thissubjectcanbetiedbackto
mymotherstriptothepoliticallychargedstateofManipurinIndia.ThestateofManipur
isfarbehindindevelopmentthanmostoftheotherstates.Progressisslowdueto
politicalunrestandmilitantactivity.Transportationisfarbehindaswellasprogressinthe
fieldoftechnologyandeconomicgrowth.Mostpeoplelivinginthemountainareasdonot
haveproperelectricityorgastocookthefood.Waterisscarcemakingitanotherbig
problem.Thoughtheregiongetsenoughrainfall,lackofwaterharvestingmakeswater
unavailableformostoftheyear.Humanmigrationtobiggercitiesforeconomic
opportunityandsafetyleaveslessmanpowertoworkinfieldsandotherareaof
developmentforManipur.WithmilitantstryingtoseparatethestatefromIndiaits
citizensdontalwaysgetaccesstobasicnecessitiesandsometimesarentabletohold
themselvesup.Thisdropsthemintheclutchesofpoverty.

NaturalDisasters

AccordingtoCNN,in2016naturaldisasterscaused175billiondollarsindamage.That
alonecouldruinthelivesofbillions.Peoplewithoutinsurancewouldhavenothing.Natural
disasterslikedroughtsthattakeplacewouldpracticallykillmanyfamilieswhodependon
watersourcefortheirlivelihood.OntheotherhandWaterdisasterssuchashurricanes
andcycloneswouldsinkships,andcripplefamiliesthatdependonfishingforfoodand
income.Thatsasidefromthefactofnaturaldisasterstakehumanlivesanddestroy
productiveproperties.Overallaccording to
www.statista.comintheU.S.alone262
peoplediedfromnaturaldisastersalone.
So,worstcasescenario,262families
havelosttheonlybreadearning
memberforthehouse,theyare
probablyfinanciallystrugglingoralready in
poverty.

Discrimination

Povertytakesplacewherediscriminationiswidelypracticed.Whendiscriminationtakes
placebetweengender,color,socialclass,orevenreligion,itnegativelyaffectstheweaker
orthemostvulnerablepartofthesociety.Sometimes,discriminationmayleadtocertain
segmentofthesocietybeingblockedfromnecessaryjobsandsuppliestosurvive.Other
timespeoplemayfeelthatreligionisresponsibleforactsofviolence,andtheymayban
peoplefromcertainestablishmentsthathelpyousurvive.Genderandsexualorientation
cancauseinequalityinpaypayleventhoughsameamountofworkisdone.Intheendthe
effectisthesame,discriminationleadstopovertyandviolence,anditisunfairtothose
whoatthelowerendofthestick.

EffectsofPoverty

Povertycreatesmanysituations-hunger,childlabor,violence,homelessness,lackof
education,medicalproblems,andlowhygienearesomeofthefewthingsIcanlist.Would

thissection,Iwillfurtherexploreeachoftheseuniquetopics.

Hunger

OneofthemostdevastatingeffectsofpovertyisHunger.Inpoverty,youmaynothave
sufficientmoneyorotherresourcestosurvive.Often,foodistheveryfirstthingsyou
aredeniedwhenyouenterpoverty.Ifanationishavingfoodshortage,peoplefacing
financialhardshipwouldbethefirst
togohungrybecausetheydonthave
themeanstoattainorpurchasetheir
food.

ChildLaborandLackofEducation

ChildLaborandLackofEducationcanbecausedbyjoblessnessandLowpaidwork.When
parentscantsupporttheirfamilytheymustfindawaytogenerateextraincome..Many
times,thewaytheycomeupwithextramoneyistheysendtheirchildtoworkforthepay.
Whentheygotoworkaschildlabors,theystartatatenderagelivingintheirjobsite,
gettingdeprivedoftheirinnocentchildhood.Manychildrenhavetododangerouswork
sometimesillegal,inhazardousenvironmentssuchasdrugstraffickingandinvolvementin
armedconflict.AccordingtotheUnitedNations,Today,throughouttheworld,around
215millionchildrenwork,manyfull-time.Theydonotgotoschoolandhavelittleorno
timetoplay.Manydonotreceivepropernutritionorcare.Theyaredeniedthechanceto
bechildren.ThisexcerptfromtheUNshowsusthestaggeringnumberofchildrenin
laborandtheenvironmenttheyworkin.Usually,thechildisforcedtoworkyearroundand
throughtheday.Thistakesawaythetimethatcanbespentinschooltogetaproper
education.Thischildwillgrowupwithoutlearningthingssomethingasbasicaseven
readingandwriting.Insomesituationsthechildjustcantaffordeducation,orevenafter
beinginschooltheystillcantreadorwrite,orevenworseeducationisntavailable.
AccordingtotheWorldBankOrganization,some121millionchildrenarestilloutof
primaryandlowersecondaryschool,and250millionchildrencannotreadorwritealthough
manyhavebeentoschool.Thisshowsustheheartstoppingnumbersofchildrenwhocant
evenspelltheirownname.Italsoshowsusthenumberofkidswhowontbeabletoachieve
anythingbecauseoftheamountofeducationtheyvehad.

HygieneandMedicalProblems

Inpoorcountries,whenpeople
areinextremepovertythey
cantaffordmedicalhelpor
medicinestohealtheirwounds
orinfections..Eveniftheyare
bornwithatreatablemedical
disorder,theywilllivewithit
fortherestoftheirlives
withouttreatmentasthey
cannotaffordtotreatit.This

Homelessness

Asyouenterextremepovertyyouslowlyloseeverything
youown.Oneofthethingsthatsboundtogosooneror
laterinextremepovertyisyourhome.Eitheryoucantpay
foryourhouseoranaturaldisasteroccursandyourhouse
ceasestoexist.Bothwaystheeffectisthesame:the

correlatesPovertytoviolenceisshowninthesequotesfromtheSouthandWestsidesof

Today,accordingtotheUN836millionpeopleareinpoverty,butaroundtheworldpeople
areworkingtomakepovertyathingofthepast.

USAID

USAIDisagovernmentorgbasedinAmericawhichprovideshelptopeoplearoundthe
worldinextremepoverty..USAIDsgoalistoprovidenourishmenttoeverychildinthe
world,encouragegirleducation,andprovideelectricityandpowerforhousesand
hospitals,andtherighttobebornintoahousefullofjoynotfear.USAIDwantstoend
extremepovertyby2030.USAIDislaunchingVisionforEndingExtremePovertythis
laysoutwhatpovertyisandaframeworkofapproachingit.AccordingtoUSAIDthe
Visionmeansthattheyaregoingtocontinue,Leverageexistingdevelopmentcapacities
andprioritiestowardsendingextremepoverty-suchasincreasingfoodsecurity,
promotingchildsurvival,adaptingtoclimatechangethroughclimateresilientgrowth,
strengtheninghealthsystems,expandingaccesstorenewableenergy,andimproving

TheUnitedNations

TheUnitedNationsisanintergovernmentalorganizationofaround193countriesfromall
aroundtheworld,whichpromoteinternationalcooperation..Theyhavealreadytakenleaps
andboundsinendingpoverty.AccordingtotheUNBy2030,eradicateextremepoverty
forallpeopleeverywhere,currentlymeasuredaspeoplelivingonlessthan$1.25aday.By
2030,reduceatleastbyhalftheproportionofmen,womenandchildrenofallagesliving
inpovertyinallitsdimensionsaccordingtonationaldefinitions.Implementnationally
appropriatesocialprotectionsystemsandmeasuresforall,includingfloors,andby2030
achievesubstantialcoverageofthepoorandthevulnerable.By2030,ensurethatallmen
andwomen,inparticularthepoorandthevulnerable,haveequalrightstoeconomic
resources,aswellasaccesstobasicservices,ownershipandcontroloverlandandother
formsofproperty,inheritance,naturalresources,appropriatenewtechnologyand
financialservices,includingmicrofinance.By2030,buildtheresilienceofthepoorand
thoseinvulnerablesituationsandreducetheirexposureandvulnerabilityto
climate-relatedextremeeventsandothereconomic,socialandenvironmentalshocksand
disasters.Ensuresignificantmobilizationofresourcesfromavarietyofsources,including
throughenhanceddevelopmentcooperation,inordertoprovideadequateandpredictable

$1.25from5%to1%,Sub-SaharanAfricahashada20%increaseinpeoplereceiving
educationfrom2000-2015,increasedthenumberofgirlswhoareenrolledineducation,
reducedthechildmortalityratefrom65deathsper1000birthsin1990tojust23deaths
per1000birthsin2015,theysaved37millionlivesfrom2000-2013withTBprevention,
2.1millionpeoplehavereceivedaccesstobettersanitation,2.6billionpeoplehavegained
accesstowaterfrom1990,andin2014AIDmoneyincreasedto$135.2billion.
