intraspecifice. În acest context propune extinderea sferei de
cuprindere a fenomenului de simbioză şi anume:
- asociere interspecifică (simbioză interspecifică,
simbioză);
8
într-ajutorarea organismelor; gândirea clară a autorului,

toate disciplinele biologice. Şi ce-o să aibă din acestea pentru
el, cel ce citeşte? Emoţia, bucuria, satisfacţia personală a

unor specii diferite. Fenomenul de simbioză determină, în mod
legic, credem noi, diferenţierea morfofuncţională a indivizilor
intraspecifici. Am putea vorbi de faptul că fenomenul de
simbioză are două laturi:
17
- simbioza interspecifică (simbioză);
- asocierea indivizilor interspecifici (simbioza
interspecifică, simbioză);
- asocierea indivizilor intraspecifici (simbioza
intraspecifică, simbioza intrapopulaţională,
*
feluri:
- simbioze (asocieri) complexe, de tipul Myxotricha
paradoxa;
totul noi, ca în cazul lichenilor;
între plantele superioare şi ciuperci;
- simbioza (asocierea) dintre insecte şi fungii de
ambrozie;
- simbioze (asocieri) digestive;
- simbioze (asocieri) ecologice etc.
Asocierea şi convieţuirea indivizilor intraspecifici
(simbioza intraspecifică sau intrafamilială) poate fi, de
asemenea, de mai multe feluri:
- asocierea indivizilor unicelulari şi formarea de
colonii;
18
- asocierea indivizilor unicelulari şi formarea de
indivizi pluricelulari;
- asocierea indivizilor pluricelulari şi formarea de
colonii;
- asocierea indivizilor intraspecifici pentru
salvarea speciei, în condiţii de mediu neprielnic;
- asocierea indivizilor pentru migraţie;
- asocierea indivizilor pentru reproducere;
- asocierea animalelor sociale;
__________________________
*Am folosit termenii de simbioză intrapopulaţională şi intrafamilială ţinând
cont, de faptul că specia şi populaţia reprezintă acelaşi nivel de organizare;

Teoria evoluţiei a impulsionat dezvoltarea exponenţială
a biologiei.
clarifice unele dintre mecanismele proceselor evolutive.
Sintetice a Evoluţiei (T.S.E.).
evenimentele. Teoria Sintetică a Evoluţiei nu a devenit o teorie
antidarwinistă, nu a provocat căderea darwinismului asemenea
unui guvern într-o ţară ci, dimpotrivă, s-a conturat ca o
continuare a gândirii lui Darwin preluând multe dintre ideile
22
- mutaţiile;
- recombinările genetice;
- modul de reproducere;
- izolarea reproductivă;
- migraţia;
- fluctuaţia numărului de indivizi în populaţie;
- durata generaţiilor şi rata succesiunii lor;
- povara genetică;
- driftul genetic;
- izolarea etologică;
- longevitatea;
- relaţiile interspecifice;
- cooperarea intraspecifică etc. (Mustaţă Gh., Mustaţă
Mariana, 2001)
mecanismelor evolutive.
T.S.E. prezintă unele neajunsuri, care solicită o analiză
mai profundă a mecanismelor evolutive. Vom nominaliza doar
câteva dintre acestea:
- simplificarea excesivă a factorilor evoluţiei;
- T.S.E. admite că aceeaşi factori determină şi
microevoluţia şi macroevoluţia;
individ;
- supraestimarea rolului selecţiei naturale;
- T.S.E. este sub controlul unei gândiri reducţioniste;
- adepţii T.S.E. consideră că o specie nu dă naştere
unei alte specii, ci unei subspecii.
sub forma unor teorii moderne. Astfel, au apărut mai multe
teorii moderne, precum: neutralismul, saltaţionismul sau
teoria echilibrului punctat, teoria autoevoluţiei, teoria
sinergică a evoluţiei etc.
factori.
Darwin a surprins unele interrelaţii complexe dintre
Simbioza înseamnă viaţa împreună a unor fiinţe,
prea mult organismul gazdă;
produse;
Vom reveni asupra
unor aspecte privind michorizele.
celulelor vegetale.
27
diviziunii sociale a muncii. Simbioza este privită ca o metaforă
socială. Spencer considera că organismele superioare s-ar fi
dezvoltat pe baza principiului „diviziunii fiziologice a
muncii”, ele fiind expresia mutualismului celulelor
constituente.

I. Wallin (1927) considera că fenomenul de simbioză
Lynn Margulis (1998) descoperă tendinţa generală a
organismelor.
element – CO2. Asigurarea formării neîncetate a acestuia
genetică a procariotelor anumite modificări salvatoare, capabile

primejdii. Simbioza este macaraua vieţii, care permite
saltul evolutiv.
Cu siguranţă că asocierea are rol adaptativ.

colonii. În urma asocierii are loc diferenţierea morfofuncţională
- simbioza interspecifică;
S-a constatat apoi că
parameci sensibili. (fig. 8)
sensibile;
- Pseudocaedibacter, cu tulpini multiple, fără efecte
toxice şi letale;
- Tectobacter, denumit factor δ, cu efect de killer
slab;
- Lyticum, denumit factor λ, cel mai mare
endosimbiont care induce liza rapidă a tulpinilor
sensibile.
existenţa doar a organismelor procariote, anaerobe, unicelulare.
43
Terra.
făcându-l accesibil insectelor.
Dintre insectele de ambrozie menţionăm:
- Coleoptere: Scolytidae şi Platypodidae;
- Isoptere: Odontotermes, Macrotermes,
Microtermes;
- Formicidae: Cyphomyrmex, Trachymyrmex ...
Dintre fungii de ambrozie mai comuni menţionăm:
- Ascomycetes: Ceratocystis, Cladosporium,
Botryoplodia, Cephalosporium etc.;
- Fungi imperfecţi: Ambrosyamyces, Ambrosiella.
Simbioza îşi pune amprenta atât asupra insectelor cât şi
asupra fungilor;
miceliană, în prezenţa insectelor devin levuriformi;
- sporii fungilor de ambrozie sunt adăpostiţi şi
întreţinuţi în timpul iernii în structuri specializate
numite micangii sau micetangii (sau containere
fungice) (fig. 11); containerele fungice sunt puse în
47
legătură cu unele glande speciale, a căror secreţie
prezintă funcţii multiple:
- adeziune mecanică a sporilor;
- acţiune antimicrobiană;
- rol în nutriţia sporilor.
Beneficiile sunt de ambele părţi între partenerii
simbiotici:
Insectele oferă fungilor:
- mediu pentru hrănire, pregătind lemnul („patul”)
pentru cultivare;
- asigură transportul şi diseminarea fungilor;
- realizează însămânţarea sporilor;
- stimulează germinarea sporilor;
- asigură eliminarea unor agenţi patogeni;
hrănitoare;
- reprezintă un factor de creştere;
- produc steroli care sunt esenţiali pentru împupare;
(fig. 12, 13 şi 14).
48
are o structură simplă şi o secreţie acidă.
colon (fig. 16).
La ierbivorele rumegătoare stomacul are o structură
deosebit de complexă. Este format din patru camere: rumen,
reticulum, omasum şi abomasum. Rumenul adăposteşte o
comunitate complexă de microorganisme (bacterii, ciliate,
flagelate şi fungi) (fig. 17).
asigura funcţionalitatea permanentă a ecosistemului ruminal.
La ierbivorele nerumegătoare, tubul digestiv este de
„tip cecal” (fig. 18).
excremente.
Simbioze ecologice

coordonare a întregului – homosfera (Mustaţă Gh., Mustaţă
Georgian-Tiberiu, 2001).
(fig.
(fig. 21)
conţinutul intestinal conţine bila care are acţiune
organism. (fig. 22)
multiple:
- sinteza unor vitamine (K, acidul folic, biotina,
acidul nicotinic, riboflavina, piridoxina, tiamina
etc.);
- stimulează mecanismele de apărare a gazdei;
- împiedică fixarea unor microorganisme patogene
etc.
- lipsa de patogenitate şi toxicitate;
habitatul în care se localizează;
- asigurarea unor efecte benefice pentru gazdă şi
anume: - împiedicarea instalării unor
microorganisme patogene;
- modificarea metabolismului unor
microbionţi, scăzându-le competitivitatea;
- producerea de metaboliţi cu activitate
antimicrobiană;
- stimularea imunităţii gazdei prin
îmbunătăţirea conversiei hranei;
- protecţia faţă de infecţiile intestinale;
54
- inhibarea celulelor tumorale;
- sinteza de substanţe bioactive (fig. 25).
sănătate a gazdei.
(convenţionale);
- cecumul cunoaşte o dezvoltare masivă la şobolani,
ajungând până la 25-30% din greutatea corpului,
faţă de 8,6% la animalele normale;
- numărul limfocitelor este redus;
- dejecţiile sunt lipsite de fermentaţie şi putrefacţie;

Streptomyces
În schimb, streptomicina are acţiune
- între Acromyrmex octospinosum şi Leucopirini;
- între Acromyrmex octospinosum şi Streptomyces;
principiului diviziunii muncii fiziologice, fiind expresia
ajutorarea presupune diferenţierea morfofuncţională a
(fig. 29).
66
îndeplineşte aceeaşi funcţie, dar are origine diferită.
organe.
superorganism.
Ce reprezintă de fapt briozoarul Cristatella mucedo?
(fig. 39)
diferenţierea morfofuncţională deoarece nu are loc
un proces de diviziune a muncii fiziologice;
diferenţierea morfofuncţională;
- asocierea, ca fenomen biologic, determină o creştere
a interdependenţei dintre indivizi, proporţională cu
creşterea numărului de indivizi asociaţi;
- în fenomenul de asociere, alături de creşterea
interdependenţei dintre indivizi are loc şi o creştere
îl formează şi invers;
caracteristici:
- indivizii din aceeaşi specie cooperează în îngrijirea
puilor;
de cuib fecunzi;
72
principiului diviziunii muncii fiziologice.
Are loc apariţia castelor (indivizi
reproducători, femele şi masculi, lucrătoare, soldaţi etc.). Apare
3
Halifman, I., 1964, Parola antenelor încrucişate. Edit. Ştiinţifică, p. 143
75
castelor putem surprinde materializare biologică concretă a
muncii fiziologice. Nu mai este necesară o diferenţiere
morfofuncţională a indivizilor, ci doar executarea într-o
4
Halifman, I., Opera citată, p. 184-185
76
o diviziune a muncii, putând determina o diferenţiere
morfofuncţională a indivizilor umani. Cu siguranţă că aici
denumirea de castă are doar o valoare metaforică.
antropogeneză şi reprezintă o constantă a evoluţiei societăţii
umane.
Coerenţa asigurării acestei diviziuni a muncii sociale
asigură funcţionalitatea perfectă a statutului respectiv.
a organismelor.
tipuri:
- discomitocondrii;
- mitocondrii cu cristele tubulare;
natura diferită a mitocondriilor.
Aici
încadrăm încrengăturile: Discomitochondria (Flagellate,
Zooflagellate), Granuloreticulosa, Rhizopoda, Rhodophyta,
Gamophyta etc. (fig. 41).
Am analizat etapele integrării simbiotice a
organismelor, semnificaţia biologică şi evoluţia acestui
fenomen biologic.
taxoni superiori noi.
Asocierea indivizilor funcţionează pe baza
principiului diviziunii muncii fiziologice, fiind expresia
mutualismului partenerilor.
86
unicelulari);
- presiunea selecţiei asigură o dezvoltare armonioasă
a partenerilor;
- se realizează diviziunea muncii fiziologice;
- partenerii asociaţi devin dependenţi unii de alţii;
acest „scop”;
87
- simbioza interspecifică;
parazite.
Procariotele aerobe au fost considerate ca fiind
protomitocondrii.
organite celulare. Astfel, prin endosimbioză s-a trecut de la
procariote la eucariote. Endosimbioza a reprezentat macaraua
într-ajutorarea celulelor (indivizilor unicelulari).
Putem
menţiona unele dintre tipurile de simbioză interspecifică:
- Simbiozele complexe (de tipul Myxotricha
paradoxa, Paramaecium aurelia etc.);
- Bacteriozele;
- Lichenii;
- Micorizele;
- Fungii de ambrozie;
- Simbiozele digestive;
- Simbiozele ecologice.
91
- diviziunea muncii fiziologice;
- diferenţierea morfofuncţională;
unicelulare:
- colonii homonome;
- colonii heteronome.
● Asocieri care au condus la apariţia organismelor
pluricelulare:
- formarea de organe;
- formarea de colonii din indivizi pluricelulari;
● Asociere pentru salvarea speciei în condiţii
neprielnice;
● Asociere fără unire fizică:
- colonii;
- stoluri;
- haite de prădători;
- bancuri de peşti;
- termitiere;
- muşuroaie de furnici;
- roiuri de insecte;
● Asociere pentru migrare;
● Asociere pentru reproducere (zboruri nupţiale);
● Asocierea formelor preumane şi umane
92
- apariţia societăţii umane;
- umanizarea copilului;
- apariţia limbajului articulat;
- apariţia şi dezvoltarea culturii umane;
- gândirea abstractă;
- spiritul.
diviziunea socială a muncii.

intraspecific ones. In this context, he proposes the extention of
the coverage sphere of the phenomenon of symbiosis, namely:
- Interspecific association (interspecific symbiosis,
symbiosis);
- Intraspecific association (intraspecific symbiosis,
intrapopulational symbiosis, intrafamilial symbiosis).
The author brings veridical arguments by which he
demonstrates that the phenomenon of association and mutual
aid of organisms represents a major factor in the process of
evolution, it generates the emergence of new cells, tissues,
organs and organisms, of new species and even higher taxa.
We do not go into details, but we invite those interested
to follow the content of the book to find out what's new.
The text is very well documented, richly exemplified
and illustrated, pleasantly and coherently written. The work
falls in constant preoccupation of the author to clarify some
aspects of evolutionary theory, to make available to biologists
and philosophers a clearest and most complex vision on the
phenomenon of evolution, taking into account the
accumulation after 1859, of the new discoveries in the field of
Biology and of the new theories formulated in the last decades.
The author is known to biologists, and not only, for
many previously published works of synthesis on the subject
matter in the present book, for his public interventions
(including during the commemoration of the great Darwin), for
his constant concern to spotlight the works of forerunners.
Now, after 150 years since the publication of the
monumental book “The Origin of Species”, it was necessary
the clarification of some theories regarding the phenomenon of
evolution - this time by the association and mutual aid of
organisms, the clear thinking of the author, his teaching and
scientific research experience, his general biological culture,
9
the constant interest for the tackled field recommend him Mr.
Professor Dr. Gheorghe Mustaţă as an author who captivates
us with such books, this time in a new edition, a book showing
us the evolution of living beings through symbiosis, with all its
sides and advantages.

evolution factors, underlined, and accentuated by that who was
and will remain the great Darwin: Variability, Heredity,
Suprapopulation, struggle for existence and Natural
Selection.
The author of the book demonstrates and accentuates
that the intraspecific symbiosis (association) and especially
interspecific symbiosis (association) is also an important factor
of evolution. Would have phytophagous organisms appeared,
especially invertebrates and vertebrates on a Planet of
cellulose, if had not been cellulosolitic organisms in
symbiosis?
“We are symbionts that live on a symbiotic Planet”
is the motto of this book, according to Lynn Margulis.
I invite you to read this book, too. The book is not
easily read. Its understanding involves solid knowledge from
all the biological disciplines. And what will he have from all
these for him, that who reads? Excitement, joy, personal
satisfaction of understanding the whole phenomenon of
symbiosis.
Reading this book, you will short the time to the whole,
to what it means symbiosis, union, etc. in the living world, in
Biology, towards progress towards evolution, towards today,
and you will add for yourselves, your impressions, more
various, more profound about what this book is.

INTRODUCTION
16
Darwin was criticized, sometimes violently, because he
took over the ideas of Thomas Malthus on overpopulation and
the appearance of the struggle for existence and because he put
an excessive emphasis on the struggle for existence, extending
it not only to biotic factors, but also to abiotic factors. The
T.S.E. and even modern theories emerged do no longer focus
on these two Darwinian factors of evolution and even they
neglect them. In our opinion both exaggeration and the neglect
of the struggle for existence as a factor of evolution is a
mistake. If the Renaissance was presenting the life idyllically,
considering that in nature harmony and mutual aid reign among
species or within the same, here it is that Darwin appears and
tries to convince people that in nature there is a continuous
struggle, that is the war of all against all, and that the man
might behaviour according to the principle “homo hominis
lupus”.
Starting from here, it begins the roots of social
Darwinism with its ups and downs.
What it seems to us unnatural is the fact that neither
Darwin nor representatives of the S.T.E. and even neither the
authors of modern theories of evolution (neutralism,
punctualis, the synergistic theory of evolution, etc.) have not
even noticed the significance of the association and of mutual
aid of organisms for the process of evolution.
It is the merit of Lynn Margulis (1981, 1991) and J.
Sapp (2004) that they discovered the significance of symbiosis
as a factor of evolution. Lynn Margulis presented masterly the
role of the endosymbiosis phenomenon in the transition from
Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes. J. Sapp highlighted the
phenomenon of symbiosis and he considered it as a factor of
evolution.
17
By symbiosis it is understood, in the classical
interpretation of the term, the living together and mutual aid of
some individuals belonging to some different species. The
phenomenon of symbiosis determines, the law-like, the
morphofunctional differentiation of individuals and the
physiological division of labor, indiferently whether it is the
association of some interspecific individuals or intraspecific
ones.
We realize that this is the one and the same
phenomenon. We could extend the scope of the phenomenon of
symbiosis so that to cover in this area also the association of
intraspecific individuals. We could talk about the fact that the
phenomenon of symbiosis has two sides:
- interspecific symbiosis (symbiosis);
- intraspecific symbiosis (intrapopulational,
intrafamilial).
If the extension of the coverage sphere of the notion of
symbiosis seems to be enforced, then we could talk of
association and the living together of individuals as a
general phenomenon, which includes two sides:
- association of interspecific individuals (interspecific
symbiosis, symbiosis);
- association of intraspecific individuals (intraspecific
symbiosis, intrapopulation symbiosis, intrafamilial
symbiosis)*.
______________________
* We used the terms of intrapopulational and intrafamilial symbiosis taking
into account, that the species and the population represent the same level of
organization, on the other hand, I used the term of intrafamilial symbiosis
because the intraspecific individuals that are associated (when we speak of
unicellular individuals) remain united through inseparation, following the
mitotic cell division, in other words they come from the same cell of origin
(parental).
18
Association and the living together of interspecific
individuals (known under the name of symbiosis) may be of
several kinds:
- complex (associations) symbiosis of the type
Myxotricha paradoxa;
- symbiosis (associations) giving rise to entirely new
beings, as in the case of lichens;
- symbiosis (associations), without of which some
species can not live, as in the case of mycorrhiza
formed in higher plants and fungi
- symbiosis (association) among insects and fungi of
ambrosia;
- digestive symbiosis (associations);
- ecological symbiosis (associations) etc.
Association and the living together of intraspecific
individuals (intraspecific or intrafamilial symbiosis) may be
also of several sorts:
- association of unicellular individuals and the
formation of colonies;
- association of unicellular individuals and the
formation of pluricellular individuals;
- association of pluricellular individuals and the
formation of colonies;
- association of intraspecific individuals for the
salvation of species, under unfavorable
environmental conditions;
- association of individuals for migration ;
- association of individuals for reproduction ;
- association of social animals;
- association of prehuman and human forms, etc.
We bring arguments by which we demonstrate the role
of the phenomenon of association in the emergence of cells,
19
tissues, organs, species and even new higher taxa in the
evolution process.
The association and mutual aid of organisms made
possible the evolutionary saltation in the transition from
Protozoans to Metazoans, in the emergence of higher taxa
(Kyngdoms, classes, orders, etc.), in the emergence of some
new ecological groups, including new living environments, etc.
Association and mutual aid of organisms are a major factor of
evolution, allowing us to speak of an evolution-based on the
association and mutual aid of organisms.
We wonder even, how was it possible that so important
factor of evolution did not draw the attention of the
evolutionists.
We do not have priority in considering the association
and mutual aid of organisms as a major factor of evolution, but
we present, convincing, hope we, its significance in the
emergence of life.
We believe that we need to talk on the future of
evolution by association and the mutual aid of organisms.

the contrary, it was shaped as a continuation of Darwin's
thinking, taking many of his ideas and especially the backbone
of his theory , the natural selection.
The Theory of Natural Selection represents the essence
T
23
- interspecific relathionships;
- intraspecific cooperation etc. (Mustaţă Gh., Mustaţă
Mariana, 2001)
Even before fully outline the Synthetic Theory of
Evolution there began to appear some critical reactions caused
by the fact that some among the mechanisms of evolution
supported and even imposed by the S.T.E. do not seem to be
plausible. There were formulated new theories that attempt to
illuminate one facet or another of the mechanisms of evolution.
The S.T.E. presents some shortcomings which require a
deeper analysis of the evolutionary mechanisms. We are going
to nominate just a few of them:
- excesive simplification of the evolutionary factors;
- the T.S.E. admits that the same factors determine
the microevolution and the macroevolution;
- natural selection is seen more and more as a purely
statistical law and it neglects the experience of each
individual;
- overestimation of the role of natural selection;
- the S.T.E. is under the control of a reductionist
thinking;
- the followers of the T.S.E. consider that a species
does not give birth to other species but a subspecies.
The constructive criticism made by some great
biologists at the address of the S.T.E. created confusion both in
the rank of the supporters of evolutionism and its opponents. It
was reached up to consider that the evolutionism is in
impasse, which is false. The criticism made to the S.T.E. does
not aim at the concept of evolutionism, but just that theory. On
the other hand, arguments are brought by which some
mechanisms of the evolution processes supported by the S.T.E.
are questioned and other solutions are offered in the form of
24
modern theories. Thus, several modern theories have appeared,
such as: neutralism, saltaţionism or the dotted equilibrium
theory, the theory of autoevolution, the synergetic theory of
evolution etc. In other words, the so-called impasse of
evolutionism honors them biologists because they are in a
continuing search in terms of explaining the mechanisms that
control the evolutionary processes.
If for J.B. Lamarck the action of the environment on the
organisms (which could act directly on plants and indirectly on
animals), the inheritance of the acquired characters, of the
exercise and non exercise of organs and the internal tendency
for progress (a certain propensity for progress) are the factors
that ensure the transformation of species, for Darwin the
factors of evolution would be: variability, heredity,
suprapopulation, the struggle for existence, and the natural
selection. As I said, the natural selection forms the backbone
of his thinking and it was also taken over by S.T.E. As regards
the suprapopulation, Darwin was severely criticized for the fact
that he accepted the populationist thinking of Thomas Malthus
and applied it in nature. The criticism brought to Darwin is
forced. The tendency towards overpopulation is a biological
reality that allows us to understand the true complexity of
intraspecific and interspecific relationships. Also, Darwin was
criticized that he outsized the struggle for life and that he
applied it multidimensionally (intraspecific, interspecific fight,
the struggle with the environmental factors etc.). As I have still
pointed, the T.S.E. largely neglected these factors. To
minimize the role of the struggle for existence is just as big a
mistake as the tendency to oversize it.
Darwin has surprised some complex interrelationships
among organisms and understood the dependence of some of
the other in certain circumstances. For him, however, the
25
collaboration and the mutual aid of the individuals from the
same species or from different ones to counter the destructive
action of the environmental factors had no significance.
It makes no sense to blame Darwin for this thing, but
we try to bring out the role of the association and of the mutual
aid of individuals from the same species or different species in
the evolution process and in adaptation.
In this sense, we intend to put into discussion some
aspects regarding the role of the association and of the mutual
aid of the individuals in evolution.
When we think of the association and the mutual aid of
organisms, we reach in the first place to the phenomenon of
symbiosis. Symbiosis means life together of some beings,
forming a unitary whole. Since the discovery of the
phenomenon of symbiosis characteristic to the world of
lichens, numerous data have accumulated demonstrating that
the association and mutual aid of organisms is a fairly
widespread phenomenon in the living world and that it is being
manifested in various forms and nuances.
The term of symbiosis was introduced by Anton de
Bary in 1879. He felt the need to create a term to be dedicated
to beings that are being associated and living together, more or
less in harmony, making a unitary whole. Later he realized that
this association could oscillate between mutualism and
parasitism.
Pierre Joseph van Beneden (1873) succeeded in
differentiating the mutualism from comensalism and
parasitism:
- Parasites are organisms that live by their profession
on account the neighbor drawing benefits just for
themselves, instead they are prudent not to disturb
too much the host organism;
26
- Comensals receive products from the table of the
neighbours, sharing at the same time with them
their own products;
- Mutualists live together with other animals without
having a parasitic or commensal life.
Gradually, more and more data have accumulated that
began to outline the diversity of the phenomenon of symbiosis.
Thus, Karl Brandt (1881) discovered the algae living in
symbiosis with certain animals, which he called them
zoochlorellae and zooxanthellae, depending on their color,
green or yellow. A.B. Frank (1885) discovered very interesting
phenomena of symbiosis between higher plants and some
fungi, which he called them mychorrizae. The mychorrizae
still raise some controversies, some researchers considering
that there would not be reciprocal benefits between the two
partners. We will return to some aspects regarding the
mychorrizae.
A.F.W. Schimpher was the first botanist who suggested
that the choloroplasts could be symbiont cells. And R. Altmann
(1890) considers that the cells are not elementary
organisms, are not indivisible units of life but they would be
colonies of bioblasts (understanding by bioplasts what we
mean today by organits). To be as convincing as possible he
paraphrased Wirchow, transforming his dictum “omnis cellula
e cellula” in “omne granulum e granulum”. The idea that
chloroplasts are simbionts was supported by Gottlieb Haberlant
(1891) too, and Shôsaburo Watasé (1893) argued that the
chloroplasts could be some algae that live in the interior of
vegetal cells.
A.Ş. Famintsyn (1891) strongly supports that the
eukaryotic cells are the result of symbiosis with more simple
cells.
27
All these ideas seem to be emerged before time. They
stired up the interest of biologists but they did not form
convinctions. The phenomenon of symbiosis has strong roots
in the biological sciences and in people's thinking, so that some
representatives of the social Darwinism have place the
symbiosis and mutualism in opposition with Hobbes's war led
by “all against all”.
Peter Kropotkin (Russian anarchist) claimed in 1915
that “the most important factor for the maintaining of life, for
the conservation of each species and for their evolution is
mutual aid “.
Herbert Spencer (1892) attempted to apply the
phenomenon of symbiosis in the social environment. Theorist
of the social Darwinism, Herbert Spencer looked the symbiosis
as a precursor of social division of labor. The symbiosis is seen
as a social metaphor. Spencer considered that the higher
organisms could be developed on the basis of the principle of
“physiological division of labor”, they being the expression of
the constituent cells mutualism.
We believe that this principle was not fully understood
by some biologists, or at least it was not given the necessary
importance. The principle of physiological division of labor in
the living world is essential in the process of evolution of life
and in the realization of biodiversity.
Darwin appreciated that: “each creature is a
microcosm, a small universe”, and we, together with Jan Sapp
(1994) admit that the social constructs the organism.
28
Modern Aspects of Association and Mutual
Aid of Organisms
It is the merit of Lynn Margulis (1998) to consider that
the symbiosis is a factor of evolution.
No one ever doubts the fact that the symbiosis means a
long-term cohabitation (permanent), in which the individuals
from two or more species live in close proximity to achieving
mutual benefits from their interaction. It is further recognized
the fact that the symbiosis appears as a stable structure,
sustainable, or as a stage of chronic disease.
Alice Savulescu considers that: “In the same manner as
the marriage in people, the symbiosis imposes permanently in
plants, mutual concessions”. 1 This thinking can be applied
perfectly to the phenomenon of symbiosis with one objection
in symbiosis the divorce does not exist.
Symbiosis or association and the mutual aid of
individuals is associated in structural, biochemical and
physiological modifications.

29
The principle of division of labor ensures both the
diversity of functions and the elimination of the phenomenon
of redundancy.
30
Symbiosis and Evolution
Wallin (1927) considered that the phenomenon of
symbiosis provided significant advantages in the development
of new structures, of new species and even for new higher taxa.
In fact, he insists on the fact that most new species are the
result of symbiosis. It is being considered that the symbiosis is
an evolutionary change realized by the inheritance of sets of
genes of the partners. The modern Neolamarckists consider
that the symbiosis ensures a Lamarkian effect, namely the
inheritance of acquired characters.
Lynn Margulis (1998) discovered the general tendency
of the individual life to form a new whole, a higher level of
organization.
31
THE PHENOMENON OF ASSOCIATION AND ITS
EVOLUTIVE SIGNIFICANCE
32
perpetuated only between the members of the same
evolutionary level - The Prokaryotes.
A major phenomenon was going to happen. Life has
managed to cover the Planet from one pole to another. The
environment that generated life and maintained it was an
anaerobic medium. An evolutionary leap took place between
the photosynthetising Prokaryotes. The photosynthesis in its
early stages was anaerobic.
The donor of hydrogen could be H2S, CH4+, HN4+ or
other different substances. Major changes (genetic equipment),
constellation of genes of some populations of Prokaryotes,
anaerobic photosynthetising made possible the emergence of
some photosynthetising mechanisms which were able to use
water as a hydrogen donor. That was perhaps one of the most
spectacular and beneficial genetic transformation from the
beginning of biological time of life. Water as hydrogen donor
is inexhaustible.The photosynthetising producers have
provided themselves an inexhaustible source of existence. In
fact, two sources: sun and water. The source of carbon, the
third essential element in the phenomenon of photosynthesis
(CO2) would have to be provided in time, by the very process
of photosynthesis, which imposed, by the using of water as a
hydrogen donor, the accumulation of oxygen in nature and the
passage from the anaerobic to the aerobic respiration of most
organisms. The life has ensured itself not only the bio-geo-
chemical circuit, but also the essential elements of its
existence: sun, water and CO2. We have to return to the
ensuring of the third element - CO2. The ensuring of ceaseless
formation of it required a passing from the anaerobic to the
aerobic respiration, as I wrote above.This transition has not
been achieved “peacefully”. It was imposed by the emergence
and the accumulation of oxygen in nature, which it manifested
33
itself as a catastrophic ecological impact, which put under the
sign of question the very existence of life on Earth.
This ecological impact was predicting an
autointoxication a life. It had not happen this because even the
public enemy no. 1 of life, the oxygen would cause in the
genetic constellation of the Prokaryotes certain saving
modifications, capable to lead to the use of oxygen in the
energetic combustions, making possible the transition from the
anaerobic to the aerobic respiration.
With this we may consider that life has discovered
the “wheel” of evolution.
The wheel of evolution was discovered and even it has
begun to rotate.
Can you imagine what happened in the planetary Ocean
during the ecological impact produced by oxygen? It is not
excluded that over 90% of living beings to have been killed,
intoxicated by oxygen. Very many Prokaryotes have
withdrawn in environments where the oxygen has not
penetrated even today and they continue today too, their
anaerobic existence.
Photosynthesis
H2O as donor of H2
Aerobic Respiration
34
The problem was not resolved. It was felt the need of a
new innovation to offset the destructive effects of oxygen. Not
all the Prokaryotes were able to plunge into the ocean depths,
in caves without light and oxygen, in the water of terrestrial
crust etc.
It had found a loop hole of salvation.
Do you know what some fish do to save their offspring
against dangerous predators? Surely, you have seen at the
scientific broadcastings offered by the mass - media. If not, we
can answer you. They take their young in the mouth and hold
them until the danger passes. They sip them with a speed and
dexterity hard to imagine. But also the chickens perceive the
danger and starte immediately towards the savior mechanism.
Something like that also happened in the early appearance of
Prokaryotes. The prokaryotic cells exposed to the murderous
danger were seeking an savior environment. Where? In the
protoplasm of some larger Prokaryotes. Thus, they were
seeking such shelter. But were they not digested? Some
perhaps were digested. It is the price paid by Prokaryotes for
the savior environment. But why was the protoplasm of these
amoeboid Prokaryotes a savior environment?
For that, between the prokaryotic cells that have
penetrated inside the protoplasm were also aerobic cells,
which became operational and savior, have become
mitochondria, which used the oxygen in the interest of the
whole. These cells were saving the whole colony of cells
sheltered in host and the host. But, unlike the fish and their
offspring, of which we were talking about, here the cells once
penetrated inside the host, they could not come out to freedom,
because the danger was everywhere. Remaining in the interior
of the host they began to be useful. Those aerobic which were
essential to the host were ensuring also the protection of other
35
cells, those which were containing porphyrin pigments
continued to do photosynthesis, and the others began to share
activities to help the hospitable host and not disturbing it. All
the prokaryotic cells penetrated in the interior of the host were
interested that the host to feel good, not to meet something
wrong to be able to live together.
And so the phenomenon of life discovered the
symbiosis. Colonies of prokaryotic cell gave the hand entering
in the “row of salvation”. The row of salvation is the
symbiosis. Symbiosis is the association and the living
together for the passage of great dangers. The symbiosis is
the crane of life, allowing the evolutive jump.
”Where there is one, it is not the power in need and pain,
Where there is two, the power increases and the enemy is in
vain”,
writes the poet, capturing the effect of union. Actually he
learned it from nature.
Symbiosis is the crane of life, which ensured the jump
from Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes. This aspect is essential in the
understanding of the life evolution.
SYMBIOSIS is the ROW OF UNION in the existence
of vital. There were joined Prokaryotes of different species and
formed a whole indefinitely more advantageous, better
structured and with increased vital potentialities. We are not
going to insist on the fact that prokaryotic cells penetrated in
the larger prokaryotic cells became the so-called organits in the
interior of the eukaryotic cells. Children at school also learn
about this.
We come back to the ecological impact caused by the
emergence and accumulation of oxygen in nature. This
accumulation was not made overnight. It must be caused
“concern” among the prokaryotic cells early in the first it
36
appears that the prokaryotic cells attempted a solution of the
impasse, in certain moments of crisis. The solution of the
impasse could be made also by the association of individuals
of the same species.
We believe that for Prokaryotes, consequently for
bacteria, the formation of colonies is not so characteristic.
However, the group of bacteria is being realized depending on
the mode of division and the tendency of cells to remain
annexed to each other and to form a whole. The cocci can live
solitary but they can be also associated. They can form
diplococci, tetracocci (Fig.1) etc. Very interesting is the
association of the cells in the case of the bacterium
Caulobacter bacteroides. The cells are being associated by a
stalk that has at the end an adhesive dis (Fig. 2). The cells
know their postion in space and locate the meeting point when
they are called upon to form a colony.
Certainly, the association has an adaptive role. Beings
have learned from the beginning of life that together can lead
an easier life, that they can better deal with the environmental
tests .Usually, the cells that form the colonies in algae, and not
only, come from the same mother cell. The daughter cells are
no longer separated and remain associated. By association a
whole is being formed. The whole is superior to the component
parts, on one condition. The associated cells should not be the
same, should not perform the same functions. In the colonies
with few cells, these are indeed similar and perform the same
functions, but as the number of cells increases, the
morphofunctional differentiation starts and also the division of
physiological labor. The association of individuals from the
same species (unicellular individuals) and the formation of
colonies has a particular significance in the world of
Eukaryotes.
37
It seems miraculous the association and the formation
of colonies in the Volvocales (algae). If Chlamydomonas
angulata is a solitary alga, in other species we come across the
phenomenon of association (Fig. 3). Pleurococcus vulgaris
forms a colony only of two cells.The cells are similar and are
united by plasmodesmata. If they are separated, they continue
to live, but after the division, the daughter cells rebuild the
colonies. In the species Gomium sociale, the colony consists of
four cells, resulted from two successive divisions, in
Eudorinella sp. and in Stephanosphaera sp., the colonies are
formed of 8 cells, in Pandorina morum and in Volvatina
ehrenbergi of 16 cells, in Platydorina of 32 and so on, as the
number of successive divisions is higher and the cells remain
annexed and the colonies are larger, in Volvox and in
Janetosphaera, the colonies reach to 4000-6000 cells.
In the algal colonies with 16 cells, we can make evident
a morphological axis (one anterior part and one posterior part)
what means a first step on the way to colonial integration. In
the colonies with 32 cells, the number of stigmata decreases
from the anterior part to that posterior one. Already, at the
anterior part a number of 4 cells multiply more difficult, this
function being taken over by the cells from the posterior part.
The morphofunctionall differentiation and the division
of physiological labor increase together with the increase of the
number of cells in Volvox aureus reaching to climax, so that
the colony creates the impression of a plurycellular individual
(without being true) (Fig. 4). One aspect seems to be
paradoxical. If the association is beneficial for individuals, the
colony having advantages over solitary individuals, then why
some species remain in colonies consisting of 2, 4, 8 or only
slightly more cells? After more than 200 million years was not
the case to increase the number of cells from the colonies of
38
these species? This way of thinking is anthropomorphic. It
seems that these reduced associations are enough to these
species for their pretensions of life. Hence, we need to
understand that evolution does not destroy its traces, but
keep them functional (this is a general biological-law, which
belong to us). 2
In the whole that is formed by the colony all the
individuals live together and depend on each other in their
existence. From the moment in which several cells were
associated and live together, it starts the division of
physiological labor, which requires the morpho-functional
differentiation, too.The morphofunctional differentiation of
cells and the cellular behavior are permanently found under the
control of the whole.
This strategy has an explanation at the level of
expression of genes. The individuals of the colony have the
same genetic structure, but the genes are being expressed
differently. The individuals at the anterior pole have genes that
control the development and the activity of the flagella and
stigmata, other genes being inhibited, while the individuals
from the posterior pole (sexual) have these genes blocked and
the activity of genes that favour the reproduction. This is what
we called the physiological and genetic division of labor
determined by the so-called somatic ecology (Gh. Mustaţă,
Georgian Tiberiu Mustaţă, 2001).
In the whole formed by the colony forming all
individuals live together and depend on in their existence to
each other (let's not forget that there are individuals who are
associated and live together). Depending on the ratio among
individuals (cells) and their position within the colony, they
2
p. 129
39
lose certain qualities and run different programs of the whole
that is represented by the colony. The cells learn to know the
position within the whole, to execute their programs, but they
are not foreign by the programs run by the cells in surrounding
areas and by the activity from the level of the whole. It is as if
the cells would inform each other as if they always make a
semiotic dialogue. The formation of colonies in the unicellular
organisms are based on cooperative interactions within the
population. Interaction involves communication between
partners, what means semiotic dialogue.
The association of the unicellular individuals and the
formation of colonies is another way that went the vital
phenomenon in its emergence. It is not the association of
unicellular individuals within the same species and their living
together, what would happen to the species Caulobacter
bacteroides, but the association by non-separation as a result of
the mitotic division. It is an intraspecific association, or rather
intrafamilial.
The intraspecific association is also a kind of life
together that lead individuals which come from the same
mother cell (egg cell). We come back again and strengthen the
fact that it is the association of some unicellular individuals and
the formation of colonies. As a result of association, the
morphofunctional differentiation of unicellular individuals and
the division of physiological labor takes place.
Symbiosis means the association and coexistence of
some organisms (organisms from different species or from the
same species). In this situation we speak of two types of
symbiosis:
- interspecific symbiosis;
- intraspecific symbiosis (intrafamilial).
40
If the extension of the term of symbiosis seems
unnatural and if we find it hard to differentiate two types of
symbiosis (interspecific and intraspecific), then we use the
term very well of association and mutual aid of the
individuals and we should talk of an interspecific and one
intraspecifioc association. We prefer to use the term of
symbiosis.
And in one situation and another it means the
association of some individuals and their living together. By
association, the individuals give birth to a whole with high
potentialities and the individuals are subjected to
morphofunctional differentiation and division of physiological
labor.
Although part of the evolutionary thought, the evolution
by association and mutual aid has not yet received the
recognition it deserves. It lacks not only from Darwin's theory
but also within the Synthetic Theory of Evolution.
41
INTERSPECIFIC SMBIOSIS
(INTERSPECIFIC ASSOCIATION )
44
We meet complex symbioses too in different species of
Ciliata.
Since 1938, Sonneborn identified the K factor in a type
of Paramecium which he called Killer. It was found then that
the K factor is a bacterium - Caedibacter taeniospiralis, which
synthesizes a toxic principle with fatal effect on sensitive
strains of Paramecium (Fig. 8).
Genetic research have demonstrated that the strains of
Paramaecium aurelia contain a multitude of many
endosymbionts:
- Caedibacter called factor K, which contains bodies
of inclusion R with effect of killer to sensitive
strains;
- Pseudocaedibacter, with multiple strains, without
toxic and lethal effects;
- Tectobacter, called factor δ, with effect of weak
killer;
- Lyticum, called factor λ, the largest endossymbiont
that induces rapid lysis of sensitive strains.
We realize that Paramaecium aurelia, and not only,
represents a being resulted through a complex phenomenon of
symbiosis.
We can not understand the significance of symbiosis in
the evolution of life, if we do not look from the distance this
phenomenon.
Life on Earth has known an evolution on multiple
levels. Perhaps the longest period in the history of life took
place on one-dimensional plane - the existence only of
prokaryotic, anaerobic, unicellular organisms. These had timid
tendencies of association by the formation of simpler or more
complex colonies.
45
We saw that by specialization of some autotroph,
chlorophyllian Prokaryotes was moved from the use of
different sources of hydrogen (H2S, CH+4, NH+4, etc.) to the
use of water as hydrogen donor, which made possible the
accumulation of oxygen on Earth. The accumulation of oxygen
provoked the first big, natural, ecological impact of life. The
solution of this impact has been made possible by the
emergence of some Prokaryotes capable to live in an
oxygenated environment and to use oxygen to obtain energy
necessary to organism. These aerobic Prokaryotes manifested
themselves like some protomitochondria. They have opened
the way for survival on an oxygenated Planet. The
Protomitochondria have shaped the path that could be
followed, but the most important savior mechanism was the
association of the protomitochondria and of some anaerobic
Prokaryotes and their living together in larger amoeboid hosts
in conditions of endosymbiosis.
The association and the living together by mutual aid
was, as I said, the biological crane which facilitated the
evolutive jump from Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes.
How could we explain and especially how could we
understand the structure and the functionality of some beings
the type of Myxotricha paradoxa, or Paramaecium aurelia,
which are the result of a complex phenomenon of multiple
symbiosis, if we do not give the due significance to the
phenomenon of association and mutual aid?
The association and the mutual aid have permited the
improvement of the semiotic dialogue to perfection, by that
generative grammar of the immune system, or up to the
communication able to allow to ants to make fungi crops which
provide them the most optimum ecological conditions and the
protection against some parasitic fungi, using a biological
46
method of control, which it is possibly as a result of a
phenomenon of symbiosis.
The concept of association and mutual aid has allowed
us to discover the existence of some biocoenotic complexes
which operates on the basis of the principle of association and
mutual aid in forming autocatalytic symbiotic networks of the
type of those from the urns of Utricularia, or of the type of
ruminal ecosystem.
49
- The fungi, which in their culture medium have
mycelian form, in the presence of insects they get a
levuriform form;.
- The ambrosia fungi spores are sheltered and
maintained during the winter in specialized
structures called mycangies or mycetangies (or
fungal containers) (Fig. 11). The fungal containers
are connected with some special glands, whose
secretion have multiple functions:
- mechanical adhesion of spores;
- antimicrobial action;
- role in the nutrition of spores.
The benefits are for both parts between symbiotic
T
partners:
Insects offer to fungi:
- medium for feeding, preparing the wood (“bed”) for
cultivation;
- It ensures the transport and disemination of spores;
- It realizes the sowing of spores;
- It stimulates the germination of spores;
- It ensures the elimination of some pathogenic
agents;
- It ensures the ecological conditions of the habitat in
which the cultures of fungi are being made.
The fungi of ambrosia ensure advantages to insects:
- They convert the inaccessible wood in a nourishing
biomass;
- It represents a growth factor;
- They produce sterols which are essential for
impupation;
- The larvae and the adults become dependent by the
fungal mass.
50
For the transmision of symbionts in the next
generations there were being perfected different modalities
during the evolution.
Microorganisms are sheltered in special structures,
more or less complexe, placed in special organs (Digestive
tube, The tubes of Malpighi etc.), (Fig. 12, 13 and 14).
52
the protozoa is digested, but their biomass is rapidly
regenerated. The digested microbiota represents the tribute paid
by it to ensure the permanent functionality of the ruminal
ecosystem.
In the non-ruminant herbivores, the digestive tract is of
“cecal type” (Fig. 18). In this case the microbiota from the
caecum is not digested. The caecal type is less efficient than
that ruminal one, and many micro-organisms are eliminated by
faeces.To cancel some of the handicap appeared it is being
installed, in some species, the phenomen of caecotrophy or
coprophagy. In this way, a resowing is being made with the
digestive microbiota through their recovery from excrements.
Ecological Symbioses
Brian Goodwin (1994) teaches us to think the organism
as a cognitive system that operates on the basis of knowledge
of self and of the environment.
Analyzing from a systemic point of view the living
world, we understand that there is an organizational hierarchy
of the biological systems, illustrated by the gradual
complication of strucutures (cells → tissues → organs →
systems of organs) in the so-called systems of integration, on
the one hand, and an ecological hierarchy concretized by the
existence of the levels of organization (individual →
population (species) → biocoenosis → biosphere).
If we desire to elucidate fully the notion of individual,
then we must apply the characteristic principles to organization
levels for both unicellular organisms and for those
pluricellular, because the environmental requirements are the
same. The ecological position of unicellular organisms is clear
in the case of solitary unicellular organisms. The situation
53
becomes more complicated in the case of colonial and
pluricellular organisms. The structural and functional
differentiation of cells in the case of colonial and pluricellular
organisms demonstrate the existence of a higher integrality.
The intercellular relationships become symbiotic
because the cells (unicellular individuals) live together,
communicate among themselves and conjugate their actions or
they oppose them to achieve the higher programs.
What is less known or it is ignored is the fact that
alongside of the body's own cells in organisms penetrate micro-
organisms that are being localized in different organs
(especially in the digestive tract) and that live together with the
host taking even some of its functions.
According to Savage (1977, 1986) we can distinguish a
normal or autochthonous microbiota and one which is being
found in transition through organism – allochthonous
microbiota.
The normal or allochthonous microbiota must carry out
certain characteristics:
- constant presence in organism;
- capacity of colonizing gradually the specific
habitats in the young animals;
- capacity of associating with the epithelium in the
colonized region;
- the maintenace of an optim density in the
communities reached to climax.
It is the matter of the fact that autochthonous
microbiota has its living environment in our body.
The coexistence of several species in the same habitat
leads to the formation of competition relathionships and mutual
aid among themselves and at the same time with their host.
Thus, it is being formed ecosystems of special type, which can
54
be classified in what Leo Buss (1987) called Somatic Ecology,
Gh. Mustaţă and Tiberiu Mustaţă (2001) developing this
concept.
The human fetus is sterile in the uterus, and his body is
built only from their cells. During parturition (birth) the fetus is
infected with a range of bacteria, the so-called pioneer
organisms. The child's body will be populated, successively,
with lots of micro-organisms that are being integrated in its
organs, belonging to the definitive structure (Fig. 19).
From an ecological point of view, our body is
constituted from numerous ecosystems that are integrated in
the so-called bioms of the organisms, under the direct
coordination of the whole - homosphere (Mustaţă Gh.,
Mustaţă Georgian-Tiberiu, 2001).
The digestive tract offers very different living
conditions for the symbiontic mycota from one segment of its
own to the other.
On the mucin there are being fastened autochthonous
bacteria, which if they occupy it in totality, they protect it
against allochthonous pathogenic bacteria (Fig. 20). If the
biofilm becomes pretty sizable, then two distinct layers are
being formed: one aerobic at the surface and one anaerobic in
the depth, occupied by aerobic bacteria and anaerobic ones,
respectively. In the buccal cavity, the dental plaque can
constitute an ecosystem of a particular type, biosken (in the
sense of Andrei Popovici Bâznoşanu) (Mustaţă Gh., Mustaţă
Georgian-Tiberius, 2001). Biotope is formed of a calcareous
substratum (dental plaque), on which it is being fastened an
organic film, formed by a pellicle of salivary mucin. On the
mucin there are being fastened autochthonous bacteria, which
if they occupy it in totality, they protect it against allochtonous
pathogenic bacteria (Fig. 20). If the biofilm becomes pretty
55
sizable, then two distinct strata are being formed: one aerobic
at the surface and one anaerobic in the depth, occupied by
aerobic bacteria and anaerobic ones, respectively.
Several dental bioskens form a biochorion or a
merocoenosis, and the whole of the buccal cavity mucous
membrane and the tongue form a bigger ecosystem, well
shaped, the buccal ecosystem.
At the level of the stomach we can speak of a gastric
ecosystem in which there is being fastened an acido-tolerant
autochthonous microbiota with different species of
Lactobacillus, Candida, Torulopsis, Bifidobacterium, etc.
Actinobacillus with antimicrobial activity (Fig. 21).
If at the level of the stomach the pH is very acidic (1.5-
2) having an antimicrobial action, in the intestine it is neutral,
and the intestinal content contains bile, which has antimicrobial
activity. However, on the intestinal mucous membrane a very
rich autochthonous microbiota is being fastened, with
beneficial effects for the body (Fig. 22 ).
The large intestine is the most favorable for the
installation of the autochthonous microbiota because there is no
secretion with antimicrobial function (Fig. 23). In the first half
of the colon it is being installed the microbiota of fermentation,
and in the second half that of putrefaction. The microbiota of
the colon is particularly important for the functioning of the
organism having multiple functions:
- the synthesis of some vitamins (K, folic acid, biotin,
nicotinic acid, riboflavin, pyridoxine, thiamine,etc.);
- it stimulates the defense mechanisms of the host;
- it prevents the fastening of some pathogenic micro –
organisms etc.;
Accordingly, none of us can live alone. Starting from
the sterile intestine of the fetus, the digestive tube is invaded
56
after the birth by the autochthonous microbiota (Fig. 24).
Species of bacteria are in close competition, sharing their
habitat. We live together with the microbiota of us. It is a
microbiota interested to protect its host, not to be put in danger
its existence. To be probiotic the autochthonous
microorganisms must carry out certain conditions:
- lack of pathogenity and toxicity;
- capacity of survival and of being active in the
habitat in which it is being localiozed;
- the ensurance of some beneficial effects for the
host: - namely, pathogenic micro-organisms;
- the modification of the metabolism of some
microbionts, lowering their competivity;
- the production of metabolits with
antimicrobial activity;
- the stimulation of imunity of the host by the
improvement of the food conversion;
- protection against intestinal infections;
- inhibition of the tumoral cells;
- synthesis of bioactive substances (Fig. 25).
Symbiotic organisms are probiotic because they are
“interested” as we have seen, for the maintaining of the health
of the host. Living in certain host habitats, they are interested
that the respective habitats should function in the normal limits.
Experimental research demonstrated that the autochthonous
microbiota were necessary for the normal development of the
organism since germ-free animals (gnotobionts, axenics) do not
develop normally and do not survive.
In the animals mentioned in germ free state under
experimental conditions, the following were being found:
57
- the liver, the small intestine and the lymph ganglia
are much smaller than in the normal animals
(conventional);
- the caecum knows a massive development in rats, it
reaches up to 25-30% of the body weight, compared
to 8.6% in the normal animals;
- the number of lymphocytes is reduced;
- droppings are lacked of fermentation and
putrefaction;
- the crop, the large intestine and the bones are
smaller.
If the axenic animals are contaminated with
autochthonous bacteria, they return to the normal state.
Hence, the edification of the organism it is not being
realized only by the own cells, but also by the cells of the
symbiotic microbiota in a “biosemiotic dialogue”. The
ecological dimension is being concatenated with a
communicational dimension. This “symbiosis” between
biology and communication with its mechanisms and laws, is
the study subject of a border discipline called biosemiotics.
58
BIOSEMIOTIC DIMENSIONS OF ASSOCIATION
AND MUTUAL AID
59
Acromyrmex octospinosum and Leucopirini symbiotic
relationships are being established. In the fungi garden it can
get the parasite fungus Escovopsis spp. To eliminate the
Escovopsis spp., the ants have established symbiotic
relationships with the bacterium Streptomyces sp., which grow
it on their body, offering it all the conditions for development
and propagation (Fig. 26). Streptomyces spp. synthetizes
streptomycin, which has fungicidal action and eliminates the
Escovopsis. However, streptomycin has beneficial action for
Leucopirini, so that a new symbiosis between Streptomyces
spp. and Leucopirini is being realized. Three types of
symbiosis is being realized (Fig. 26):
- between Acromyrmex octospinosum and
Leocopirini,
- between Acromyrmex octospinosum and
Streptomyces spp.;
- between Streptomyces sp. and Leucopirini.
We find that symbiotic mutualism represents a
biological phenomenon based on semiotic dialogue established
in the evolutionary process between two or more species.
Symbiosis is not being realized only between species
which develop between them a semiotic dialogue, coherent,
perfectly integrated into semiosphere.
Even in the situation in which, apparently a species
would constrain another one to bring benefits (symbiosis
degenerating sometimes into parasitism, so how some
biologists consider), the reality demonstrates that it is a
coherent semiotic discourse, based on a generative, functional
grammar, allowing the existence of the system at optimal
parametres.
60
Ecological Symbiosis in Utricularia
E.R.Ulanowicz (1987) elucidates the type of ecological
symbiosis from the carnivorous plant Utricularia.
Utricularia is a carnivorous, aquatic plant, without
roots, which has some urns that draws phytoplankton and
zooplancton establishing certain relationships among
themselves and with the host, leading to the formation of a
functional and permanent ecosystem, based on symbiotic
relationships.
Utricularia offers to algae and bacteria a support at the
outside and inside of its urns ensuring the formation of a
periphyton.
In urns zooplanctonic speciers penetrate, too (Ciliates,
Flagelates, Rotifers, Copepods, Cladocers etc.). The
zooplankton captured in the urns can not any more to come out
to the exterior because of some hairs that close the exit.
Utricularia, being a carnivorous plant, acts by means of some
digestive enzymes, synthesized by specialized cells, and digest
some zooplankters. The decomposed substances are absorbed
by the walls of the urns. But the zooplankton entered in the
urns is not rapidly and fully consumed. Some zooplankters are
phytophagus and consume algae and bacteria from the
peryphiton fastened on the urn. Other zooplankters consume
other species of zooplankton and organic particulated remains
from the liquid inside the urns. In time, new zooplanketrs enter
in the urns, so that in this environment an intense life is being
maintained through two mechanisms: by entering of other
individuals and by reproduction.
Ulanowicz discovers here certain autocatalytic cycles.
We have in mind the food chains that are being established
61
between bacteria and algae, the phytophagous zooplankters and
zoophagous zooplankters of different degrees (Fig. 27).
The organization of autocatalytic cycles at the level of
species differs from the chemical autocatalysis because the
beings are independent and adaptable.
Ulanowicz discovers the system of auto-organization at
a system of reduced dimensions in which some relationships of
symbiosis dominates.
Autocatalytic system behaves as an epicenter towards it
convergs increasingly big quantities of energy and substance,
the system directs them to itself.
We have to accept that the species in the ecosystem
formed by Utricularia burn like some flames to maintain its
own existence in the system. They behave similar to chemical
reactions networks of metabolism, which are being auto
maintained and autogenerated. We grasp here very well the
concept of organization of the vital in the autopoietic networks.
63
64
INTRASPECIFIC SYMBIOSIS
(INTRASPECIFIC ASSOCIATION)
At 150 years from the appearance of the Origin of
Species, we can affirm that the theory of evolution still
dominates the biological and philosophical thinking. Of course,
Darwin's theory has undergone, over time, some additions and
modifications to be implemented in step with the new gains of
biological sciences, but also it did not fell like a government in
a country. The theory of evolution has become a concept today,
and this concept undergoes modifications and adjustments
from one period to another of the biological development, the
evolutionists being in a permanent activity of elucidation of
some mechanisms of evolution.
Ch. Darwin has nominated among the factors of
evolution: variability, heredity, suprapopulation, the struggle
for existence and natural selection.
The struggle for existence is being intensified in
T
66
physiological labor, being the expression of the mutualism of
partners.
The phenomenon of symbiosis has become
progressively a richer load, a greater spectrum of coverage.
Starting from the fact that the colonial and pluricellular beings
are organized by the association of several cells (which are
basically unicellular individuals), among which reciprocal
connections are being established, it was being launched the
hypothesis that the higher organisms are developed on the basis
of the principle of physiological division of labor, being the
expression of the symbiotic mutualism and of cellular
components. Several cells finalizes the formation of a colony
or a complex, pluricelluar individual, on the basis of division of
labor. It is being formed a system of mutual dependence, and
the individuals are more and more intimately related, forming a
kind of society.
Let us return to our discussions and to consider that the
planetary Ocean is populated only by unicellular prokaryotic
and eukaryotic beings. A giant leap was being made from
Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes, but the evolution of life was not
limited, but it has continued and will continue.
Two evolutionary strategies have been used: the
association of unicellular individuals, and the formation of
colonies and the association of unicellular individuals, and
the formation of pluricellular organisms. And in one case or
in another, the association and mutual aid require the
morphofunctional differentiation of unicellular individuals and
the physiological division of labor. The association of the
intraspecific individuals represents a saving evolutive strategy
for the vital phenomenon. So, the association and the mutual
aid of individuals from the same species or different species
represent a major factor of evolution. Even if we become
67
tedious through repetition, we emphasize again that the
association of intraspecific individuals is being made not by the
grouping of some individuals disseminated in the environment,
but by the non-separation of the daughter cells derived as a
result of mytotic divisions.
69
The Association of Unicellular Individuals and the
Formation of Colonies
It is particularly interesting the evolution of the
phenomenon of colonization in flagelates (Choanoflagellata ),
Kingdom Zoomastigota (Zooflagellata).
In Codonosiga botrytis and Codonocladium
umbellatum (Fig. 30) the colonies are sedentary, homonomous
and in the form of umbella. Even if they do not help much
between them, the individuals live grouped.
In the species Proterospongia choanjuncta the
individuals are of choanoflagelat type, homonomous, but
assembled in a gelatinous mass (Fig. 31). In the ontogenesis of
this species passes through a solitary stage which is sedentary.
This form can detach from the substrate, loses its stalk and
becomes free. By division more cells are being formed that
remain grouped, forming a homonomous colony. It is
surprising the ontogeny of this species. It passes through
several stages: attached solitary form, free solitary form and
colonial homonomous form. The colonial form dominates in
time. There seems to be the most advantageous form. In
Sphaeroeca sp. the colony with several individuals begin the
morphofumnctional differentiation of individuals and the
physiological division of labor. The cells are being associated
and form a functional whole, the colony, superior to solitary
individuals. In Proterospongia haeckeli the colony is
heteronomous. (Fig. 32). On this group of organisms we will
return.
It seems to us that there was being too easily passed
over colonial unicellular species. Regarding the phylogenetic
interpretation of some of them it remains still a mystery. If we
want to put it in discussion only Myxobolus pfeifferi, which
70
parasites different species of fish, we can see that its taxonomic
position is different from one clasification to another, being
placed between Protozoa, or between lower Metazoa. The
tendency of unicellular individuals of associating and forming
colonies represents an evolutionary strategy of which we have
to take into account in the process of evolution. Although the
moment in which several unicellular individuals are being
associated and live together begins to depend in their existence
on each other, but also of the whole from which they belong.
Interpreting systemically (in accordance with the theory of
Bertalanffy), the relationships between part and whole, we
realize that the unicellular individuals associated in the colony
are subjected automatically to the program of the upper level -
the colony. Through its programes the whole is interested to
provoke the morphofunctional modifications of cells and the
physiological division of labor.
Not to see the difference between biological progress
realized by some species of algae (Chlamydomonas angulata,
Pleurococcus vulgaris, Pandorina morum and Volvox aureus)
it means not to understand anything from what it means the
phenomenon of association and its significance in the
emergence of vital.
71
In the Hidrozoa, the individuals may be solitary or
colonial. The colonies of primitive type are homonomous, of
monopodial or sympodial type (Fig. 33). The functionality of
the whole is given by the common gastric cavity, that makes
that the individuals should be dependent on each other.
In a society of individuals two principles act:
differentiation and integration. The more the differention is
bigger, the more the colonial integration is better outlined. As
the differentiation can not be achieved only in the interest of
integration, so the integration can not take shape only through a
multiple differentiation.
In this way, we can explain the differentiation of the
polyps in gastrozooids, dactylozooids, acanthozooids,
gonozooids in Hydractinia echinata (Fig. 34).
In Syphonophores the morphofunctional differentiation
of individuals is even much more marked. Some individuals
seem to be specialized organs of a unitary individual. In fact,
the individuals of the colony carry out certain functions.
In Halistemma pictum, the pneumatophore realizes the
movement of the colony on the vertical plane, the nectozooids,
that have the aspect of some jellyfish, realize the movement in
different directions on horizontal plane, the gastrozooids take
in totality the function of feeding and the prehensile filaments
are highly modified polyps with the function of capturing the
food ( Fig. 35). The individuals are grouped into formations
called cormidia. The cormidia can detach off in some species
and can become independent forming the so-called
eudoxomes.
The colonies of Physalia physalia, etc. Stephalia
corona. are ultracentralized giving the impression of some
unitary individuals, well shaped (Fig. 36 and 37). The
morphofunctional differentiation of the polyps is so strongly
72
realized that we have the impression that in siphonophores the
body (colony) is a whole formed of organs represented by
individual metamorphosed organisms according to the
principle of physiological division of labor.
We have to remember the fact that in the situation of
the colonies in discussions, the evolution found a separate
strategy in the formation of organs - the metamorfozation of
polyps according to the principle of physiological division
of labor.
In Cnidaria, but in Anthozoa a new strategy appears in
the formation of organs. Although the colonies are formed of
thousands or even millions of individuals, the division of labor
and the formation of organs are no longer done by the
morphofunctional differentiation of polyps, but by the
differentiation and specialization of embryonic membranes
(ectoderm and endoderm).
Each polyp keeps both its digestive function and that of
reproduction. The digestive tract may be complicated by the
emergence of the pharynx and of multiple septa of endodermic
origin, which present mesenteric filaments of ectodermic
origin. At the level of some septa, gonads are being formed of
endodermic origin. In Hexacorals the septa present at their
inferior part one prehensil filament each, long and thin, rich in
cnidoblaste cells similar to that from syphonophores (Fig. 38).
This prehensil filament resembles that of Syphonophores and
carrioes out the same function, but it has a different origin. It
does not represent a metamorphosed polyp, but an organ with a
prehensile function. It is a phenomenon of biological
convergence. So, the cells of the body of a metasoan can
associate and can form organs that fulfill certain functions.
It is interesting the fact that in these colonial animals
one encounters the both strategies of formations of organs: by
73
the differentiation and specialization of some individuals
within the colony and by the group of the cells from the
embrionyc membranes and the formation of organs. The
formation of organs imposes the association phenomenon of
individuals or of cells (being an intraspecific association or
intrafamilial).
The colony is similar to a society of individuals which,
at one level of morphofunctional organization, can perform the
functions of an organism, or rather of a superorganism.
What is actually the bryozoan Cristatella mucedo?
It is definitely a colony with individuals differentiated
morphofunctional and specialized, but what does it matter,
when you see the whole in motion, in its dynamics. It is a
superorganism. The association imposes the differentiation and
the division of physiological and ecological labor.
Differentiation means biodiversity. Diversity of what? The
colonies of Protista are formed of unicellular associated
individuals. In other words, of individuals coming by mytotic
division and are not separated. If there are few individuals in
the colony, these are not differentiated and though they are
united and live together, they remain undifferentiated
If their number increases, it starts the morphofunctional
differentiation in the colony. Sometimes this distinction is
downright spectacular. We look at the colony of Volvox
aureus, but we look at it as a whole. We do not see how big is
the differentiation of some cells. We think that in fact these
cells are individuals associated of the same species. The
association is the origin of differentiation and the morpho-
functional specialization. The status of cells in the case of the
pluricellular individuals is lost even more. We do not think any
more that in this case too, it is the matter of association of some
cells (unicellular individuals) and the formation of tissues and
74
different organs, entering in what we call the labor division and
the morphofunctional differentiation.
Again, we draw attention to that when we speak of
individuals, as a level of organization, it does not matter that
they are individuals or pluricellular. From an ecological and
systemic point of view, it is the same thing, the individual level
of organization. Both unicellular and pluricellular individual
fulfill the same functions and have a similar behavior.
Unicellular individuals are being associated and form a
colony. Once associated and being in big number enough, they
start their morphofunctional differentiation and the
physiological divison of labor.
Does not the same thing happen, if pluricellular
individuals are associated and form colonies? O.K., O.K.! but
they are pluricellular. It is natural, but they are individuals, too,
so they will behave similar to unicellular individuals who are
associating! That is, there will take place their
morphofunctional differentiation and the physiological division
of labor. Sometimes themorphofunctional differentiation is so
strong that the associated individuals do not resemble each
other. They become a kind of organs of a superorganism. How
beautifully can we surprise here the function of some
biological principles! Moreover, even in the edification of
colonies formed from pluricellular individuals, we can grasp
that it is applied too the second strategy of association in the
formation of organs. There is not only a modification of some
individuals in organs, but also the formation of organs on the
account of embryonic membranes of the same individual. Only
by analyzing these aspects we discover the significance of the
phenomenon of association and mutual aid of individuals in the
edification and evolution of organisms.
75
Things starte to clear up for us. The association of
individuals, and their living together, indifferently whether
they are unicellular or pluricellular, intraspecific or
interspecific individuals, physically linked or separated, they
follow an evolution taking place after certain biological laws.
- the association of a small number of individuals
does not cause morphofunctional differentiation
since it does not take place a process of division of
physiological labor;
- the association of a larger number of individuals
cause the physiological division of labor, followed
by the morphofunctional differentiation;
- the association as a biological phenomenon
determines an increase of interdependence between
individuals, proportional to the increase of the
associated individuals;
- In the phenomenon of association, along with the
increase of interdependence among individuals
takes place too, an increase of their interdependence
to the whole which they form and inversely;
- The more the physiological division of labor and the
morphofunctional differentiation of individuals
increase, the more the whole acquires new qualities
which do not have the associated, separated
individuals.
Association and mutual aid is the crane of evolution.
76
Association without Physical Contact and its
Evolutive Significance
When we hear speaking on the television or radio about
birds and animals, that we have laws for the protection of birds
and animals, we should not go into disarray. It is a matter of
the general culture of those who make such mistakes, who do
not know that birds are animals too.
But if we hear some experts or less specialists speaking
of colonies of pelicans, of penguins, of sponges or Cnidaria,
then we can ask ourselves: are these notions?
Ed. O. Wilson (1980) considered that: „the term of
colony implies the fact that its members are united in
physically or differentiated in reproductive castes and sterile
castes, which present both characteristics”.
Association as a biological phenomenon does not
require necessarily a permanent physical contact among
individuals. By association the individuals starte to depend in
their existence on each other in various ways.
In the social insects, the associated individuals can form
a society which functions as a whole, as a superorganism.
Wilson (1980) considers that the social organisms are
characterized by the common possession of the following
characteristics:
- individuals of the same species cooperate in the care
of offsprings;
- there is a division of labor with more or less sterile
individuals, that work in the benefit of the nest
fecund partners;
- there is an overlap of at least two generations of life
stages capable of contributing to the colony labor,
77
so that the offspring helps their parents in a certain
period of their lives.
Being an association of intraspecific individuals (both
the families of ants, and those of termites and bees start from a
bee - queen we find that a superorganism more or less perfectly
functional is being formed. From the moment in which an
association of some individuals is being produced, there must
take place a morphofunctional differentiation of individuals or
at least a functional differention conformably to the
physiological principle of labor division. These conditions are
carried out by some social insects living in colonies (heaps,
white ant heaps etc.). There takes place the emergence of castes
(reproductive individuals, females and males, working,
termites, soldiers, etc.). But the phenomenon of polyetism,
appears too, which means that the individuals of the colony
successively carry out certain works depending on the age,
without obvious morphological modifications.
Castes and the polyetism open a wide pallete of labor
division and the specialization on a certain direction gets the
aspect of a profession.
To understand the functionality of a colony, flock or
herd as a whole is sufficient to mention the behavior of geese
from the species Phoeniculus roseus. These geese live in flocks
of 20-25 individuals, not larger. The individuals are not
differentiated morphofuncţionally, so there are no castes.
There are only females and males, all individuals being
sexually functional. However, the reproduction is not achieved
but by two individuals. The others abstain and do not
participate in reproduction. If the individuals with reproductive
function disappear (they fall prey to some predators), then
another pair takes over the function of reproduction. If all the
individuals would reproduces, the flock would become too
78
large and would not survive. This example allows us the
understanding of some association of organisms (colony, flock,
herd, heap, etc.) as a functional whole, as a supraorganism.
We dare to draw the attention on the fact that the
association and mutual aid has made possible the existence of
social life and even the emergence of the rational being - Homo
sapiens sapiens.. The social life assumes the association of
several individuals of the same species and the living together
on certain teritory, or in a certain ecosystem. The social life
presumes certain advantages for the members of the respective
group by carrying out of some activities which should permite
the maintenance of the whole and some reciprocal gains.
We can examine different aspects of the social life.
The flocks of starlings are being manifested as a unitary
whole both in terms of flight formation and the feeding mode.
In this way, we can explain the emergence of self-regulation
mechanisms of the optimal number of starlings in a flock. If the
number of individuals is too large, there appear difficulties in
terms of nutrition (it is not enough food), and if it is too small,
the feeding is not being realized properly. An isolated starling
does not survive alone because it is not being normally fed and
it is not able to ensure its flight safety.
The colony of pelicans behave as a well individualized
whole. Mutual aid is being realized in a best mode during the
process of feeding. Fishing in pelicans takes place after a
certain model (pelicans are being disposed in the form of an arc
and are being oriented towards the shore}, catching the fish
similar to a purse) that ensures the maximum efficiency. The
association of pelicans presents obvious adaptive advantages.
In most species of migratory birds the association of
individuals is being realized during the migration. The
formation of flight is well structured and balanced, and it is
79
subjected to certain rules of behavior, which ensures a shift as
long as possible with a smaller effort. For this, the flock is led
successively by certain individuals, which made the orientation
and which establish a certain pace of flight. When these
individuals get tired, they are replaced by others and they
retreat back for energetic recovery. Flight formations during
migrations are characteristic of each species in part and it
represents an optimal model for shifting.
The nomadic ants not only that they do not construct
their heaps, but they move in an organized manner, the
movement is accomplished by a permanent control. The mode
of arrangement and travel of the “black stream” or of the
formation of marching in the African nomadic ant species
Darylus orientalis is downright astonishingly. 3 The formation
currently under way presents a vanguard and a rearguard
ensuring the orientation and security of the march, and on the
side parts flank patrols shift with very well defined tasks. If
experimentally one flank patrol is totally captured, then
immediately a state of agitation and restlessness in the
respective area appear, and in a short time one new patrol is
organized which it is sent on a mission. The biosemiotic
dialogue functions perfectly within the group that behaves as a
superorganism.
The association in packs of wolves, of jackals, hyenas,
etc. determines the formation of a unitary group that can ensure
the success in feeding and in defense. The association and
mutual aid allow each partner a particular state of freedom, but
it imposes too a certain functional and organizational
hierarchy, highly efficient, ensuring the unity of the whole. In
such situations between partners may appear too a certain
3

80
competition, but that does not exceed the limits imposed by the
whole.
In some social animals (termites, ants, bees, wasps) the
association and mutual aid lead to the physiological and
ecological division of labor, division that attracts too, a
morphfunctional differentiation of individuals and the
formation of castes or at least of the phenomenon of polyetism,
although individuals are not physically united. Thus, in
termites different functional castes are being formed that
ensure the proper functioning of the whole. Castes have the
value of true organs of the superorganism. Soldiers ensure the
defence of the termitarium against the intruders as the
crustacean pincers ensure the protection of the wearer. What
would represent in ants the individuals which are the so-called
reservoirs of fresh juices (such as would be the mellipherous
ants, of the species Myrmecocystus chortideorum or fodder
ants) 4 , if not some “organs” using at the fresh storage of fresh
juice with which the ants are feeding. Here a parallel can be
done with the specialization of individuals in the colonies of
syphonophores. In the case of castes, we can grasp the
biological concrete materialization of the principle of
physiological division of labor imposed by the phenomenon of
association of individuals.
Polyetism (which involves the execution by individuals
of some activities placed at intervals within the respective
group) appears as a fine addition to the physiological process
of division of labor. It is not necessary any more a
morphofunctional differentiation of individuals, but the
performance in a certain order of some activities within the
group. Usually, there is a certain algorithm in which the
respective activities are performed, although sometimes it can
4
Halifman, I., Cited opera, p. 184-185
81
return, depending on the necessities, to the taking again of a
certain circuit.
We draw the attention that we can not afford to
interpret the association and the mutual aid of individuals in a
simplistic mode. The hill of ants is not a crowd of individuals
living together and neither a sum of fellows performing the
same function. The hill of ants becomes, by the association of
individuals, a superorganism which has functional and
ecological valences indefinitely more complex than individuals
taken isolated.
This fantastic saltation appeared in the evolution of life
is the result of the association and mutual aid of the same
species and their living together.
The association of individuals and their living together
is also at the basis of the anthropogenesis process. Here we can
point out, in an even spectaculous mode, the simultaneous or
concomitant function of two extremely important factors in the
evolutionary process: the association of individuals and the
mutual aid of individuals in the struggle for existence.
The human being becomes human being only within the
human society. The human child at birth is not a human being,
he can become truly human being only in the human social
environment, accordingly, only in the conditions of the
association and the mutual aid of people. At the building of
Homo sapiens sapiens and of the human society contribute also
positively the competition between individuals. This can
manifest in various forms: It may look like a sporting
competition, of a scientific Olympiad, of mathematics, of
physics, of the competition to education of the colleagues in a
class, etc.. All these having positive effects both for individuals
and for society. The competition can take also the aspect of the
struggle for arming, a competition that can reach to paroxysm
82
in the development of weapons of mass destruction or of some
biological weapons.
The social life imposes the principle of labor division;
there may be the matter of the principle of physiological
division of labor, as we saw in the case of insects, and not only,
or the principle of social labor in the case of human being. As
we mentioned before, in some social insects (termites, ants,
bees, etc.), the social life imposes a division of labor. It can
determine a morphofunctional differentiation of individuals
and the emergence of castes, or it may take place only a
differentiation in what concerns the the implementation of
certain works, leading to the phenomenon of polyetism. In the
case of emergence of castes would be the matter of the imprint
of the division of physiological labor, the individuals belonging
to some castes getting the value of some organs of the
superorganism.
In the case of human society, a division of social labor
is being realized, not a physiological labor. In this situation,
organic modifications do not appear. Even if they were and
persist some castes, in the case of human populations (eg in
India), there had not and would not take place a
morphofunctional differentiation of human individuals. Surely
here the name of caste has only a metaphorical value. But the
division of social labor was the basis of the anthropogenesis
process and it represents a constancy of the evolution of human
society.
In a developed and civilized human society the problem
of ensuring the social division of labor is a State issue, which
finds expression in the training of specialists within the process
of training and education.
The coherence of ensuring this division of social labor
ensures the perfect functionality of the respective State.
83
We can demonstrate in our days, that the division of
social labor is an attribute of human society, when there is a
spectacular migration of the labor force. Migration is caused
just by the accent emphasized in some States by providing
experts in all fields. The hemorrhage of specialists in some
countries proves the lack of preoccupations in the respective
countries, or the powerlessness of the leaderships of the States
to understand this requirement of social life and to ensure the
operation of this principle.
We do not propose ourselves to solve some issues in
our essay, but we want to emphasize the significance, not only
biological, but also social, of the process of association and
mutual aid of organisms.
It is surprising the fact that, although the theory of
evolution founded by Darwin 150 years ago put its mark on the
biological and philosophical thinking, it had not succeded to
discover the significance of this major factor of evolution - the
association and the mutual aid of organisms.
84
It seems that the transition from Protozoans to
Metazoans could not be achieved but by the association of
unicellular individuals (by non separation) and the formation of
colonies. In the evolution of colonies it is always started from
homonomous forms and it is being reached to heteronomous
colonies with highly differentiated individuals as a result of the
physiological process of labor division.
Some taxonomists tried to explain the transition from
the unicellular organisms to multicellular organisms through
some colonial forms.
A. Lameer (1933), A. Remane (1950) and Radu
Codreanu (1963) gave a hypothesis that in the transition from
Protozoans to Metazoans an important role would have had the
colonial choanoflagellates.
Starting from homonomous colonies of Proterospongia
choanjuncta or Sphaeroeca type by morphofunctional
differentiation of cells would have reached to the colonies of
Proterospongia haeckeli type and by more pronounced
differentiation could have appeared colonial structures similar
to the stage phagocytella (parenchymula) in the onthogenesis
of primitive metazoans (Sponges, Cnidaria, Plathelminthes)
(Fig. 40).
By ordering the cells on two layers could have appeared
in the evolution similar formations to planuloid larvae from the
groups above mentioned. These formations have been named
planuloid metazoans. Hence, depending on the mode of life
different evolutive directions could have differentiated.
85
THE ROLE OF ASSOCIATION IN
MACROEVOLUTION
86
of some higher taxa (kingdoms) might have be given just by
the different nature of mitochondria.
What is more interesting and worthy of consideration is
the fact that some groups of organisms have not even
mitochondria. This means that these groups Archaeprotista
and Microspora never achieved this kind of symbiosis.
The presence of chloroplasts (plastids) in some groups
of organisms (the kingdom Plantae) explains us the separation
of evolutionary direction depending on the presence of some
Prokaryotes containing porphyrinic pigments,which functioned
as protoplastids.
The fact that mitochondria are differentiated by their
structure and functionality, we can follow the separation of
some groups of Protista.
We can speak of the so-called group
Discomitochondria, presenting mitochondria with crystals in
the form of discs. Here belong to the kingdoms:
Discomitochondria (Flagellates, Zooflagellates)
Granuloreticulosa, Rhizopoda, Rhodophyta, Gamophyta etc.
(Fig. 41).
Mitchondria with tubular crystals are being found in the
phylums: Ciliophora, Dinomastigota, Apicomplexa and
Chlorophyta and from here the link with the Phylum Plantae
Mitochondria with flattened crystals are being found in
the kingdoms: Haplospora, Paramyxa, Cryptomonadina and
Haptomonadina.
In support of the idea that the phenomenon of
symbiosis had a major importance in the formation of some
higher taxa, we can nominate a number of kingdoms showing
heterokonts (flagella with a particular structure). The presence
of the flagella, their structure and even the position they
87
occupy at the level of the body have important taxonomic
significance.
We discussed the significance of the phenomenon of
symbiosis in the structure and function of the digestive tract in
some animals. Among Mammals, Paricopitats are ruminant
herbivores. These have the stomach with a similar structure,
particular, determined by the celulosolitic microbiota contained
in the rumen. Is this not a higher taxon which is differentiated
from the non-ruminant herbivores (Imparicopitata) which have
another kind of functional structure of the digestive tract,
depending on the compositon of the celulosolitic microbiota
and by the ecological conditions in which they function?
Sure!. The Ruminants and Nonruminants among the
herbivorous mammals can be considered two different groups,
two higher taxa that have evolved according to the digestive
microbiota with which these animals have established
symbiotic relationships.

CONCLUSIONS
89
mutual aid among the individuals of a species or of some
different species and their significance in the process of
evolution.
Starting from Anton de Bary (1879), who introduced
the term of symbiosis, understanding by that the existence of
some beings that live together forming a unitary organism,
we are trying to achieve the modern interpretation of this
biological phenomenon and to demonstrate that the
phenomenon of association and mutual aid represent a major
factor of evolution. We have revised the contribution of some
great biologists to the elucidation of the importance that
presents the association and the mutual aid of organisms as a
major factor of evolution. In this sense we put into discussion
the endosymbiotic hypothesis formulated and substantiated by
Lynn Margulis and the consideration of symbiosis as a factor
of evolution.
We have analyzed the stages of symbiotic integration of
organisms and the biological significance and the evolution of
this biological phenomenon.
Anton de Bary (1879) understood by symbiosis the life
together of some different organisms by physical contact or
one inside the other, indifferently whether the association is
conducted in harmony or it appears even a tendency of
parasitism. Symbiosis or the association and the living together
of some organisms is a permanent relationship. The association
of organisms and their living together impose structural,
biochemical and physiological modifications of partners and it
can lead to the emergence of cells, tissues, new organs or even
new species or new higher taxa .
The association of individuals functions on the basis
of the principle of physiological division of labor, being the
expression of the mutualism of partners.
90
By symbiosis we understand, in the current expression,
the living together and the mutual aid of some individuals of
different species. We can not but not to grasp that in nature it
occurs the association and mutual aid too of some individuals
belonging to the same species. The association of individuals
of the same species is not achieved by the union of some
dispersed individuals into the environment (although there may
be also such a situation, see the case of Dictyostelium
mucuroides), but by the non-separation of the unicellular
individuals (cells) resulting from mitotic divisions.
The association of individuals belonging to the same
species can lead to the formation of colonies of the unicellular
species or to the edification of pluricellular organisms.
We agree with Lynn Margulis (1998) and with Jan
Sapp (1994) that the phenomenon of association and mutual
aid is a major factor of evolution.
Life together (the association and the living together)
imposes certain conditions and confers advantages to partners,
either the association of individuals is of different species or of
same species:
- the union of two or several cells (unicellular
individuals);
- the selection pressure ensures a harmonious
development of partners;
- it is being achieved the physiological division of
labor;
- the associated partners are dependent on each
others;
- cohabitation is permanent .
- To understand the association and the mutual aid as
a factor of evolution it is necessary to elucidate
some aspects:
91
- We do not separate the phenomenon of association
from that of mutual aid because the association is
being achieved onlyin that „end”;
- We might equate the term of association with that
of symbiosis, but this term is devoted especialy for
the association of individuals belonging to different
species.
In this situation we should divide the term symbiosis
into two:
- Interspecific symbiosis;
- Intraspecific symbiosis.
There might use the term of association that we
synonimized thus:
92
We accepte the theories which consider that the primordial
atmosphere of the Earth was anoxic (reducing). This means
that all the primordial Prokaryotes were anaerobic.
Prokaryotes experienced a continous emergence and
suffered a radical ecological transformations, giving birth to
producers, consumers and decomposers. In this way, the bio-
geo-chemical circuit appeared, which has spread to the
planetary level. This was generated by life, but it became in
time an essential condition for maintaining the life on Earth.
The autotrophic Prokaryotes were represented by the
photosynthetizing bacteria, containing porphyrinic pigments
and chemosynthetizing bacteria, which used as energetic
support different mineral suports, in the same manner as the
chemosynthetizing bacteria from our times. The
photosynthetizing Prokaryotes were using as donors of
Hydrogen, H2S, CH4+, NH3 etc.. An anaerobic photosynthesis
was being achieved. By major genetic modifications the early
photosynthetizing organisms occur, capable to use the water as
hydrogen donor. As a result of functioning and spreading of
photosynthetizing bacteria that were using water as hydrogen
donor, it started to accumulate an increased amount of oxygen
in the atmosphere and water. 5
The gradual accumulation of oxygen on Earth led to the
emergence of the first natural ecological impact. The
provoked ecological impact by the accumulation of oxygen on
Earth caused the extinction of many Prokaryotic organisms,
perhaps the greatest extinction since the beginning of
5
When it reached 1% of the total amount of today, ozone was formed,
protective screen against ultraviolet rays, and multicellular beings could
occur, ever more and more perfected; when oxygen reached 10% of the
total percentage of today (by about 450 milion years ago) the first vascular
plants appeared and the expansion of animals to dry land has begun.
93
biological time, because all the beings were anaerobic. This
impact also caused the appearance by mutations and genetic
recombinations of the first aerobic organisms. The aerobic
prokaryotic organisms, the true protomitochondria were able
to offer the answer to life at the great natural ecological impact
provoked by the accumulation of oxygen. Many anaerobic
Prokaryotes have continued their existence on Earth refuging
theselves in environments devoid of oxygen (in the ocean
depths, in some caves, in the fossil water contained in certain
geological strata, etc.), others have entered the symbiosis,
while others have become parasite.
The aerobic Prokaryotes were considered as being
protomitochondria. They have become capable to use the
oxygen to obtain energy necessary to vital processes. These
species were few. Even if they were differentiated by certain
structural peculiarities they were, however, few. What
happened with many other species of anaerobic Prokaryotes? It
seems that nature has chosen the most suitable way to save the
situation. The prokaryotic cells have sought their shelter for
survival. The best shelters, it seems, were the large amoeboid
Prokaryotes, which were incorporating by phagocytosis other
smaller Prrokaryotes. Certainly, many of them were digested,
but some were continuing to live together with the host, living
an endosymbiotic life. In the situation in which a large
amoeboid prokaryotic and protomitochondia were penetrating,
the whole colony were surviving to the assault of oxygen.
Penetrated into the host, the endosymbiotic Prokaryotes started
to specialize for certain functions and became cellular organits.
Thus, by endosymbiosis there has passed from Prokaryotes to
Eukaryotes. Endosymbiosis represented the crane of life which
raised the life from one evolutive level to other. This
evolutionary strategy had a double function: to save the life
94
from the natural ecological impact caused by the accumulation
of oxygen on Earth and to achieve an emergence by a more
complex cellular organization, capable to cope with the
challenges of the environment and to favour the biological
progress.
Over two billion years, life on Earth was represented by
unicellular organisms. By the emergence of Eukaryotes, the
unicellular organisms were located on two different levels of
evolution: Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. The endosymbiosis
phenomenon (of association and mutual aid) has determined
the division of organisms in two large superkingdoms:
Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. The vital phenomenon was not
and it is not limited in evolution. For new evolutionary leaps
new strategies were asking. We are going to find, in our
analysis, that the basic support for new emergences was also
the crane of life, also the association and mutual aid of cells
(unicellular individuals). The association and mutual aid of
individuals was performed on two different ways: the
association and the mutual aid of interspecific individuals and
the association and the mutual aid of intraspecific individuals.
The association and the mutual aid of individuals has
become a major evolutionary factor both in microevolution and
macroevolution. Without fear of error we could affirm that
the association and the mutual aid of individuals is a major
factor in macroevolution.
The association and mutual aid of individuasls follow
from the beginning two ways: interspecific and intraspecific.
The interspecific association also called interspecific
symbiosis, or simply - symbiosis may be in various forms
more or less known. In all the cases, the principle of
physiological division of labor act and the living together
allows the formation of a unitary whole. We can mention some
95
among the types of interspecific symbiosis: complex
symbiosis (of the type Myxotricha paradoxa, Paramaecium
aurelia etc.);
- Lichens;
- Mycorrhiza;
- Fungi of ambrosia;
- Digestive symbioses;
- Ecological symbioses.
The intraspecific association, which we could call it
too intraspecific symbiosis or intrafamilial symbiosis,
presents two evolutionary strategies: the formation of colonies
and the formation of pluricellular beings.
The intraspecific association is controlled by the same
principles such as that interspecific:
- division of physiological labor;
- morphofunctional differentiation;
- formation of a unitary whole.
We nominalize in what follows, several types of
interspecific associations, without pretension of comprising all
of them:
● Associations which have led to the formation of
unicellular organisms - homonomous colonies;
- heteronomous colonies;
● Associations which have led to the emergence of
pluricellular organisms:
- formation of organs ;
- formation of colonies from
pluricellular individuals ;
● Association without physical union:
- colonies;
- flocks;
- packs of predators;
96
- shoals;
- termitaria;
- hills of ants;
- swamps;
● Association by migration;
● Association for reproduction (nuptial flies);
● The association of prehuman and human forms:
- emergence of human society;
- humanization of the child;
- emergence of articulated language;
- emergence and development of human
culture;
- abstract thinking;
- spirit.
We draw the attention that Homo sapiens would not
have crystallized as a species without the association of
individuals, so without carrying out of a social life. Social life
has led to the social division of labor. Social life, accordingly
the association of prehuman beings and their mutual aid has
favored the emergence of the articulated language, making
tools, development of human culture, the emergence of human
thinkingt and of spirit.
We present below a scheme by which we wish to
emphasize the significance of the association and mutual aid in
the evolution of life.
