The Communist Manifesto
by Karl Marx & Fredrich Engels

I. BOURGEOIS AND PROLETARIANS

The modern bourgeois society that has sprouted from the ruins of feudal
society has not done away with class antagonisms. Of all the classes that
stand face to face with the bourgeoisie today, the proletariat alone is a really
revolutionary class. The French Revolution, for example, abolished feudal
property in favour of bourgeois property.

It loses its class-character.

The abolition of bourgeois individuality, bourgeois independence, and bour-

geois freedom is undoubtedly aimed at.

B. Petty-Bourgeois Socialism

The feudal aristocracy was not the only class that was ruined by the bour-
geoisie, not the only class whose conditions of existence pined and perished
in the atmosphere of modern bourgeois society. 2. CONSERVATIVE, OR

Metamorphosis
by Franz Kafka

“Gregor, Gregor”, he called, “what’s wrong?” Gregor!” At the other side

door his sister came plaintively: “Gregor? “No”, said Gregor. Gregor is
ill. “Mother, mother”, said Gregor gently, looking up at her. Gregor only
remained close to his sister now. Gregor got out.” “Gregor had almost
entirely stopped eating. How can that be Gregor?

The Shunned House
by H. P. Lovecraft

The Shunned House.

[Illustration: “That awful door in Benefit Street which I had left ajar.”]

Neighboring houses, it must be added, seemed entirely free from the nox-
ious quality.

Not till my adult years did my uncle set before me the notes and data which
he had collected concerning the shunned house. The shunned house, it
seems, was first inhabited by William Harris and his wife Rhoby Dexter,
with their children, Elkanah, born in 1755, Abigail, born in 1757, William,
Jr., born in 1759, and Ruth, born in 1761. The house, it is true, was still in
good condition; and the street had been widened and changed in name from
Back Street to Benefit Street. Rathbone was a practical man, and rented the
Benefit Street house despite William’s wish to keep it vacant. Maria had
been at the shunned house from 1769 till the removal of the family in 1783,
and had seen Mercy Dexter die. The next spring no more pale grass and
strange weeds came up in the shunned house’s terraced garden, and shortly
afterward Carrington Harris rented the place.

Theodore Roosevelt
by Theordore Roosevelt

Most men can have the same experience if they choose. The men I knew
best were the men in the clubs of social pretension and the men of cultivated
taste and easy life. The Senator was an extremely influential man. I never
coddled these men. The young men swarmed to enlist. Both houses of Con-
gress were controlled by these men. Many of them were evil men. The big
beef men bitterly opposed the law; just as the big railway men opposed the
Hepburn Act. We are the stanch upholders of every honest man, whether
business man or wage-worker.

Man-of-war requested for Chagres.
