Important Derivation/Modification and Numerical Portion

Q-1
Drive and explain the log mean temperature difference.
Applying this derivation in numerical given below

- A 200 API crude oil is cooled from 300 to 200oF by heating cold 60o API gasoline
from 80 to 120oF in a counter flow heat exchanger. At what fluid temperature should
U be evaluated
Also prepare all numerical which were assigned in presentation
Q-2

Ethylene glycol enters a 5 m length of 10 mm diameter, copper tube in cooling system at

velocity of 5 m/sec. what is the heat transfer rate if the average bulk fluid temperature is
20 oC and tube wall is maintained at 100 oC.
At the bulk temperature of 20 oC the fluid properties are
Kinematic viscosity = 1.92x10-5 m2/sec
Thermal conductivity = 0.249 W/m.K
Heat capacity = 2380 J/Kg.K
Density = 1116.6 Kg/m3
/ w = 9.9

Q-4
Radiation
Modify the Stefans Boltzman law to estimate the net heat exchanger between two large
parallel plates having same emmissivities.

Two parallel metal walls of a kitchen oven have temperatures T 1 = 232 oC and T3 =27 oC
and emissivities 1 = 3 = 0.30 Where subscripts 1 and 3 denote the inner and outer walls
respectively. The space between the walls is filled with a rock wool type insulation.
Assuming the insulation material to be transparent to thermal radiation. Calculate the
radiant heat transfer rate per unit area between the two walls.
(a) With no radiation shield
(b) for one radiation shield of aluminum foil having 2 = 0.09

Q-5

Example in which conduction and Convection both are occurring

Steam at 250oFflows in an insulated pipe. The pipe is mild steel and has inside
radius of 2inch and outside radius of 2.25inches.The pipe is covered with a 1
inch layer of 85% magnesia.The inside heat transfer co-efficient is 15 BTU/hr-
ft2-oF and the outside co-efficient is 2.2 BTU/hr-ft 2-oF.Determine the overall
heat transfer co-efficeint and the heat transfer rate from the stream per foot of
length,if the surrounding air temperature is 65 oF.Draw and label the shape
