Dear Dr McGarry,

RE: Novartis Newman Fellowship in Rheumatology

I am writing to congratulate you on your recent appointment as the Novartis Newman

Fellow in Rheumatology.

For over 27 years, leading Irish and multinational corporations, semi-state bodies,
voluntary organisations and individuals have sponsored high-calibre, post-doctoral
research across the humanities and sciences through the UCD Newman Fellowship
Programme. Each Newman Fellow is endowed for a two-year period to conduct a major
research project leading to publication. The Fellowships build on the complementary
strengths and needs of the University and the corporate sector.

The Newman Fellowship Programme is supported by the UCD Foundation. The role of
the Foundation is to advance the strategic goals and objectives of UCD, including the
generation of financial support for research and teaching across the university. The
UCD Foundation manages the relationship between the Newman Fellowship donors
and the university. The cornerstone of this stewardship programme is the annual
dinner for the donors, Fellows and academic mentors. As a Newman Fellow it is
mandatory for you to attend the dinner (on 25 th April 2017). Some photos of the 2016
dinner are online at: http://www.ucdfoundation.ie/funding-priorities/newman-
fellowship-programme/annual-newman-fellowship-dinner/

Please note that it is also mandatory for you to submit an Interim Report at the end
of your first year and a Final Report at the end of your second and final year. Again,
we will remind you of this as the deadlines approach, but ask that you familiarise
yourself with the attached forms now, for reference.

In recognition of the donors generosity, we will be adding this Fellowship to the

Newman Fellowship Donor Roll in the foyer of UCDs OReilly Hall. Please will you
review the entry below and let me know if you wish to make any alterations.

2017- Trudy McGarry, Rheumatology Novartis Ireland Ltd.

If you have not already initiated the student registration process, please liaise
directly with your academic mentor, Professor Doug Veale. He will be able to assist you
in identifying the most relevant degree programme for enrolment and with navigating
the UCD application process. Further details are available at:
http://www.ucd.ie/medicine/studywithus/graduateresearch/. If you have any enquiries
about the application process, please contact the School directly on: 01 716 6738 or
by email to medicine.research@ucd.ie.

Once you have received your UCD student ID and completed the student registration
process, you will need to complete an online Scholarship Authorisation Form. Your
academic mentor will initiate this process online; you will receive an automated email
via your UCD Connect email address with instructions once they have completed their
section. Please note that Newman Fellows can access their pay slips online by logging
in to http://www.ucd.ie/connect/ and choosing Employee Self Service.

There is a dedicated research account associated with your Fellowship which is

managed by your academic mentor. Guidelines on claiming eligible expenses and
relevant claim forms from this account are online at: http://www.ucd.ie/bursar/.

The UCD Foundation often has the opportunity to profile the work of the Newman
Fellows during the year both on campus and through the wider media, often in
conjunction with the donors, and therefore we do ask that you keep us informed of any
publications or press interest resulting from this Fellowship. Please remember that
you should always acknowledge both the donor and the UCD Foundation whenever
appropriate.

In the meantime, if you have any queries about any aspect of the Newman Fellowship
Programme, please do not hesitate to contact me via email on liz.mcfeely@ucd.ie or
on 01 716 1287.

Yours sincerely,

Liz McFeely
