INTRODUCTION:

Riceisthestaplefoodfor65%ofthepopulationinIndia.Itisthelargestconsumed
caloriesourceamongthefoodgrains.Withapercapitaavailabilityof73.8kgitmeets
31%ofthetotalcalorierequirementofthepopulation.Indiaisthesecondlargest
producerofriceintheworldnexttoChina.TheallIndiaarea,production,andyieldofrice

intheyear200102was44.62millionhectares,93.08milliontonnesand2086kg/ha
respectively.InIndiapaddyoccupiesthefirstplacebothinareaandproduction.Thecrop
occupiesabout37%ofthetotalcroppedareaand44%(200102position)oftotal
productionoffoodgrainsinIndia.WestBengalistheleadingproducerofpaddyinthe
country.Itaccountsfor16.39%ofthetotalproduction,andtheotherleadingstatesare
UttarPradesh(13.38%),AndhraPradesh(12.24%),Punjab(9.47%),Orissa(7.68%)
andTamilNadu(7.38%)theremainingstatesaccountfor33.45%oftheproduction.
Indiaisalsooneoftheleadingexportersofriceintheworldmarket.India'sexportofrice
stoodat23.89lakhMTin199798.Thecorrespondingvalueofforeignexchangeearned
wastothetuneofRs.3371.00crorein199798.IndianBasmatiRicehasbeena
favoriteamonginternationalricebuyers.Followingliberalizationofinternationaltrade
afterWorldTradeAgreement,Indianricewillbecomehighlycompetitiveandhasbeen
identifiedasoneofthemajorcommoditiesforexport.Thisprovidesuswithample
opportunityfordevelopmentofricebasedvalueaddedproductsforearningmoreforeign
exchange.Apartfromricemilling,processingofricebranforoilextractionisalsoan
importantagroprocessingactivityforvalueaddition,incomeandemployment
generation.

DescriptionofRiceMillingOperation:

Paddyinitsrawformcannotbeconsumedbyhumanbeings.Itneedstobesuitably
processedforobtainingrice.Ricemillingistheprocess,whichhelpsinremovalofhulls
andbarnsfrompaddygrainstoproducepolishedrice.Riceformsthebasicprimary
processedproductobtainedfrompaddyandthisisfurtherprocessedforobtainingvarious
secondaryandtertiaryproducts.

ProcessDefinition

1.PreCleaning:Removingallimpuritiesandunfilledgrainsfrompaddy
2.Destoning:Separatingsmallstonesfrompaddy
3.Parboiling(Optional):Helpsinimprovingthenutritionalqualitybygelatinizationof
starchinsidethericegrain.Itimprovesthemillingrecoverypercentduringdeshelling
andpolishing/whiteningoperation
4.Husking:Removinghuskfrompaddy
5.HuskAspiration:Separatingthehuskfrombrownrice/unhuskedpaddy
6.PaddySeparation:Separatingtheunhuskedpaddyfrombrownrice
7.Whitening:Removingallorpartofthebranlayerandgermfrombrownrice
8.Polishing:Improvingtheappearanceofmilledricebyremovingtheremainingbran
particlesandbypolishingtheexteriorofthemilledkernel
9.LengthGrading:Separatingsmallandlargebrokensfromheadrice

StatusofRiceMillingUnitsinIndia:

Ricemillingistheoldestandthelargestagroprocessingindustryofthecountry.At
presentithasaturnoverofmorethan25,500/croreperannum.Itprocessesabout85
milliontonnesofpaddyperyearandprovidesstaplefoodgrainandothervaluable
productsrequiredbyover60%ofthepopulation.Paddygrainismilledeitherinraw
conditionorafterparboiling,mostlybysinglehullersofwhichover82,000are
registeredinthecountry.Apartfromittherearealsoalargenumberofunregistered
singlehullingunitsinthecountry.Agoodnumber(60%)ofthesearealsolinkedwith
parboilingunitsandsundryingyards.Mostofthetinyhullersofabout250300kg/hr
capacitiesareemployedforcustommillingofpaddy.Apartfromitdoublehullingunits
numberover2,600units,underrundiscshellerscumconepolishersnumbering5,000

unitsandrubberrollshellerscumfrictionpolishersnumberingover10,000unitsarealso
presentinthecountry.Furtherovertheyearstherehasbeenasteadygrowthof
improvedricemillsinthecountry.Mostofthesehavecapacitiesrangingfrom2tonnes
/hrto10tonnes/hr.

Needforimprovedricemills:

Therecoveryofwholegrainsinatraditionalricemillusingsteelhullersfordehuskingis
around5254%.Thereisexcessivelossintheformofcoarseandfinebrokens.Further
lossoflargeportionofendospermlayersduringthedehuskingoperationfurther
accentuatestheproblem.Againstit,therecoverypercentofwholegrainsinmodernrice
millsusingrubberrollshellersfordehuskingoperationisaround6264%.Thewhole
grainrecoverypercentfurtherincreasesto6668%incaseofmillingofparboiledpaddy.
Thusitcanbeseenthatthereisanoverallimprovementofrecoveryofwholegrainsby
about1014%ifoneusesrubberrollshellersforricemillingoperations.

consumedinsizeablequantitythroughouttheyear.Itisprimarilyasnackitemwhichis
veryeasytomakeevenatashortnotice.Peopleofallagegroupsenjoypreparations
madefromitandtheyareeasytodigest.Itcanbefriedwithspicesandchillytomake
hotandtastydishoritcanalsobemixedwithmilkandsugartomakesweet
preparation.

PRODUCTS

Pohaismadefrompaddyandhenceitiseasytodigest.Spicyorsweetpreparationsare
madefromitinthecategoryoffastfood.Riceissoakedinwaterandthenroastedto
makepohaandthustheproducthaslongershelflife.Thisproductcanbeproducedin
anypartofthecountryaspaddyisgrowninalmostallstates.MadhyaPradeshis
consideredasmostpreferredlocationasthePaddygrownhereisidealforPoha.

MANUFACTURINGPROCESS

Itisconventionalandverywellstandardised.Paddyiscleanedandgradedtoremove
impuritiesandthenitissoakedinhotwaterforabout45minutes.Afterdrying,itis
roastedtomakeflakes.Theseflakesarepassedthroughsievestoremoveunwanted
materialsandtoobtainflakesoffairlyevensize.Finally,theyarepacked.Duringthe
process,yieldofevensizedflakesisabout6065%,whereasprocesslossand
wastagesaccountfor5%.Balance30%isHusk,whichisusedintheRoaster.

RawMaterial

Theallimportantmaterialispaddyofthedesiredquality.Itisgrowninamplequantityin
thestatebutitisadvisabletohavesomefirmsupplyarrangementsbeforehandto
ensuretimelysupplyduringleanperiod.Gunnybagswillberequiredforpackingof
finishedgoods.

PRESENTPROPOSAL

TheGovernmenthasintroduced"CustomMillingwhichmeansmillingofpaddy,not
belongingtothemiller,intoriceinhisricemillonpaymentofmillingchargesincashor

inkindthesuccessofanyIndustrydependsprimarilyintotwofactors.Oneisavailability
ofRawmaterialandsecondlytheassuredmarketfortheFinishedGoodsproduced.The
introductionofCustomMillinghavehelpedRiceMillingIndustryinboththisaspectasthe
paddyisprovidedbyGovernmentwhichismilledintoRicebytheRiceMillersandis
deliveredbacktotheGovernmentforaconsiderationoffixmillingcharges.ThustheRice
MillsarenowadaysprosperingthroughGovernmentPolicy.

CONCLUSIONANDRECOMMENDATION

ThepromotersofhavechosenIndustrialarealocatedatRichhaiIndustrialArea,whichis
centralplaceforrawmaterialavailabilityandfinishedgoodssale.Thesiteissituated
neartonationalhighwayensuringnotransportationbottleneck.Theproductproposedto
bemanufacturedissoldwithinJabalpurandnearbyareasandarehavinggreatdemand.
TheInvestmentinPlant&machinerywillqualifyforCapitalSubsidyundercreditlinked
capitalsubsidyscheme.Withtheirwideexperienceinbusinessandgoodrelationshipwith
variousGovernmentDepartmentsandIndustries,theywillbeinpositiontoinstall&run
theProposedIndustryefficientlyandthuswillbeabletoincreaseoverallprofitabilityof
group.
