Andrew Jackson DBQ

By Cierra

A big debate has been talked about, does Andrew Jackson deserve to be on the

twenty dollar bill? Who even is Andrew Jackson, and why is he important? Andrew

Jackson was the seventh United States president, who was born an orphan that became

a war hero after the battle of New Orleans. He tried running for president, losing to

John Quincy Adams, which he called a corrupt bargain, but ran again to claim

presidency. I think he doesnt deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill, why? He

mistreated the Natives, he didnt follow the Constitution and he acted like a tyrant

always doing his own thing, and finally, he didnt accept losing.

One reason he doesnt deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill is because he

mistreated the Native Americans. In document L, it shows the paths of the five Indian

groups that were removed. They were pushed to present day Oklahoma to be left

alone as well as gained land specifically for them. One of the groups of the Indian

Removal Act of 1830, was the Cherokee Tribe that tried to vote not to leave. This

movement was known as the Trail of Tears, which many Natives were killed by the

cold, starvation, etc.

Another reason Andrew Jackson doesnt deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill is

because hes a tyrant that overused his power. In document E, the artist shows his

opinion that Jackson was a tyrant. According to the background essay, enemies of

Jackson claimed he behaved more like an autocrat, or a king, than a democratically

elected president. This is showing others agreed he's a tyrant, as well as the Indian

Removal Act of 1830, when the Cherokee Tribe petitioned to not move, Congress approve,

but Jackson continued the act anyway. Daniel Webster replies to Jacksons Bank Veto

Message in document G, saying over every power of the government This is

showing he is over using his power for the government.

A final reason he doesn't deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill is because he

couldn't accept losing. One example of this is in the background essay, showing his

thoughts between John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay. In a deal that Jackson

supporters forever branded the corrupt bargain... This is showing he didn't accept losing

due to the corrupt bargain. This is an issue because he wanted to win only for himself,

wanting things he never got. Which causes problem for the United States, where the

economy is starting to create the beginning of the fall

Andrew Jackson mistreated the Natives, moving them further West. Jackson

acted like a tyrant, which was not good for the economy causing it to slowly crumble.

Finally, Jackson couldn't accept losing, and not getting his way, this can cause issues

along the way. So, does he really deserve to be on the twenty dollar bill?
