Fifth grade Reading Power-Up

Power-up Remediation 2/13/2017 and 2/15/2017

MONDAY **Italicized words are to give you background and help you guide the student discussion
Introduction (3 min.):
Discuss CAUSE AND EFFECT (Cause=why something happened; Effect=what happened or the result
of something)
Key words help signal a cause and effect relationship. Have students create a list of key/signal words
(i.e. so, thus, because, as a result)

Read (5 min):
Students read Dear Mr. President independently
As students read, have them highlight/underline/circle any key words they see in the passage.
If a student finishes early, have them read through it again and look for cause and effect relationships
while they wait for the others.

Apply Strategy (10 min):

Discuss the first cause and effect relationship as a group (Grace wrote to Abraham Lincoln because
she didnt like the way he looked; as a result, he grew his beard out)
Pass out the Cause & Effect graphic organizer and have students find 3 more cause and effect
relationships in the text independently.
Support students as needed. Let us know if this is extra difficult for any particular students.

Close (2 min):
Go over the student responses for the Cause and Effect graphic organizer (have students share their
responses and correct as needed)
Review what cause and effect are and key words.

WEDNESDAY
Introduction (3 min.):
Review COMPARE AND CONTRAST (shows how 2 or more things are alike or different; key
words=both/neither, differ, like/unlike, in contrast, on the other hand, etc.)
Venn diagrams are a great way to categorize/group compare and contrast relationships

Read (5 min):
Students read Americas First People
As students read, have them underline/highlight any key words
If a student finishes early, have them read through it again and look for any compare and contrast
relationships while they wait for the others.

Apply Strategy (10 min):

Discuss what is being compared in this passage (the Eastern Woodland and Southwest Native
Americans)
On the back of their passage, have students draw a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the Eastern
Woodland and Southwest Native Americans --Find one or two differences or similarities AS A
GROUP(find the evidence in the text) and then have students finish INDEPENDENTLY
Support students as needed. Let us know if this is extra difficult for any particular students.

Close (2 min):
Go over the student responses for the Venn diagram--can students show you the evidence in the text?
