Timelines -
Milestones
As the two chosen units
dont have milestone
reviews, I have taken these
two milestone reviews
which I completed as part of
my Unit 32 work. A
milestone review is a way of
checking the progress of
your current project and
how it going in terms of the
status of the project,
studying the schedule as
well as the tasks I have
completed. These were
useful as it helped me see if
I was working to deadlines
and what I had left to do. I completed these milestones myself whereas when you have a
client meeting, you discuss the progress with the client.
Relevant legislation
Legal and ethical considerations are very important when it comes to making videos, DVD
menus and graphics. This is the documentation I put together for Unit 78, making game
graphics. I did not need to complete any relevant legislation as part of Unit 54 and Unit 34.
These considerations should always be thought about before making anything to ensure
that you do not discriminate against anyone and your own work is copyrighted.
Legal
Copyright:
Copyright is a law which protects things such as documents, images, text, music files and
videos, these are mostly things found on a computer as it is easier to steal work especially if
its published on the web. The reason why copyright is used is because it ensures that your
work is safe and cannot be copied by anyone. Another purpose of copyright is to make sure
that a creators work is protected if it ever gets stolen. It also made sure that people got
rewarded for the things they made themselves. The law was created and put in place in
1988.
If this act wasnt put in place, there would be little anyone can do legally if their work was
stolen or claimed as their own. You can only break the copyright law if you have taken
something which was initially someone else without their permission. If the copyright isnt
with the creator themselves, it can sometimes be hard to track but using primary assets
without their permission may put you in trouble due to you being in violation of this
Victoria Holt
copyright law. The person who holds the copyright is the only person who can authorise the
reproduction of work even if the work is on an electronic device.
Currently you dont need to apply or register for this law to be put in place as it is done
automatically, this then lasts for a lifetime and an extra 70 years after the creator has died.
After the 70 years has passed the copyright is then usually handed down to the creators
heirs. If someone is commissioned to do any kind of design work, they will retain the
copyright until both parties decide otherwise. If the visual creators are employed and not
working for themselves, the employer is the one who retains the copyright.
With images you can get ones called stock photos which are photos where the copyright
owner has decided to allow the public to freely use them. These are normally found on the
internet as this is a place where a lot of useful resources are kept these days. Sometimes
strict rules are put in place with the stock photos stating where and when the photos can be
used, these rules are made by the copyright owner so it is vital that you read what the
copyright holder has specified first. Also with images you can buy the right to use a
copyrighted image if you wanted that particular image.
In terms of software packages what you have to do is purchase a licence to use that certain
package legally, this means you dont own of the rights of it but have permission from the
company to use it legally. Each of the software packages has one licence which means it can
only be used on one computer. If you were to re-use the same disk and load the software
onto another computer for a different person to use, then you would be breaking the
copyright law and so you would need to buy another licence in order to do this legally.
Multi-user packages are good for businesses and schools as a large number of people all
need to be using the same software at once. People are more likely to comply with these
laws if its a multiuser package as they wont have to buy numerous single packages for
each..

Deadlines
These are the dates/times in which work should be completed by in order to hand it in to
your client on time. There is a couple of ways, which helped me ensure that I met these
deadlines. The first way is by using my ILP, which outlined tasks for me to complete every
lesson in order make the deadline. The good thing about the ILP is that I could write session
reviews so that I could keep up to track with what I had done and what I had left to do.
Another way I
used to plan my
time out is by
creating a
timeline that
shows all the
tasks I need to
complete each day. If I did not complete the tasks then I had to catch up in my own time.
The other way I used to track my progress is by creating and adding to a Gantt chart to show
when I completed each individual task in Unit 4. This helped me see the areas that still
needed work doing or were incomplete. In my two chosen units I only used an ILP to help
stay on track because it was the easier/quickest way of seeing what I had left before the
deadline, plus a Gantt chart and timeline were not a requirement on the briefs.
Below is evidence of where I wrote about meeting deadlines in unit 4:
Resources + Sources
Victoria Holt
Throughout unit 34 and 54 I used many resources and sources to gather information and
images to use in my documentation. For my sources, I mostly used websites as it was easily
accessible and I could add them to my work for illustrated examples. Some of the website
links I used are for unit 34/54 are as below:
A sound recorder
Storyboards
Computer/YouTube
Photoshop/Flash
In the folders below is where I stored all the assets I collected and made for unit 34:

Brainstorms
A brainstorm like the one I made for unit 4, is used to get all your initial ideas down in one
place. I didnt need one for unit 34 or 54. The ideas are all about my different plot line ideas
for many advertisements. The conclusion explains which idea I chose for the advertisement.
The brainstorm is a way of developing and improving ideas before choosing the final idea.
This evidence shows that I came up with four different ideas for an advert video, before
deciding on a trainer advert.
Advertisement for a New Radio/TV Program:
If I made an advertisement for a radio program it would be for a channel like High Peak
Radio which is local to me to try and get more listeners for them. It would include a few
things such as songs that may be played every day, the radio station logo, what time the
radio is on and the radio code. Most radio adverts mostly use sound because unlike TV you
cant see anything to watch. For my advert it would start of by introducing the radio station
itself, then it would go on to show popular songs which are top of the charts, in the
background of the music the advert would show the name of the song and artist. This kind
of advert would be very easy to make because you dont have to do much research and just
need to find the top of the pops songs. The example below is an advert which is done to
advertise a radio weekend with a certain radio station.
For a TV program it is mostly to advertise a new kind of program and targets a specific
target audience. The whole idea of advertising a TV program is to increase the viewers and
then the companys sales. In a TV advert it will mostly include snippets of what is to come
and the best bits to try and attract the advert viewers attention. This would also be quite
easy because once you have made a few episodes of the TV show then you can just crop out
video clips that you want to include. The example below is an advert which ITV created to
advertise the live episode of coronation street and what kind of things happen in the
particular episode.
Some examples of these kind of adverts include
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlMbWKg3Yzo Radio Advert
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jxOSk4RYG8 TV program Advert
Advertisement for a New Brand of Trainers:
If I was to produce an advertisement for trainers, I would more than likely publish it on the
internet or on the brands own website so that it targets all the younger generation. If I were
to make a trainers advert to show on TV, then it would have to be recognisable and target
all age ranges depending on the target audience of the channel youre watching. My film
advert idea is to film different types of trainer and the when it comes to the new branded
trainer they will be advertised to be amazing and suitable for any kind of hobby/sport. This
gives the impression they have many different functions. . (name of shoe)
Made for anything/made for you would be my slogan shown at the end of my
advert. At the start Ill show different activities with different brands of trainers
at each one, and then at the end all the same activities with just the new brand
Victoria Holt
of shoe being advertised. In my advert I would show that the trainers are fit for walking for
example into college, riding a bike, running, football, dancing, netball or golf. I would aim
my trainer advert at the target audience of young teenagers mid 30s.
Mind maps
Mind maps are a quick and easy way of getting ideas
down in a visual way. This is a mind map of ideas from
unit 72, for characters, game play, sound effects,
visual style and menus, which I created before making
my game graphics and designing my world runner
game.
Proposal
This is the proposal I made covering the range on the brief, for my healthy eating animation.
It covers things like consideration of audience, generation of ideas and planning. A proposal
is something for the client with a description and explanation of how the animation will look
and the specifications so that the client can try and visualise the final product. The client can
also compare the final product to the specifications mentioned in the proposal.
Script
This is evidence of the script I made for my healthy
eating animation. Each girl on the script is a main
character in the animation. The reason I created this
script in unit 34, was to give the voiceover people an
idea of what to say.
This the evidence of the feedback results from my peers. It shows a positive response for my
finished animation, with people giving it a high rating and it fitted the given criteria.
Below show the results of the questionnaire that I created for my animation. I got 10 people
in the class to fill them out.
1. The first question asked is the animation about 30
seconds with the credits. 80% of people said that Is the animation about 30
my animation was equal to 30 seconds. The other seconds with credits?
20% said that my animation was less than, however
this is not true as my animation lasts around 32
seconds. This means no one thought my animation
was more than 30 seconds in length. I am happy
with the result of this question as it means everyone
was happy with the length and it meets the criteria. Less than More than Equal to 30 seconds
2. Question 2 was about whether or not the plot is easy to understand and why. From the
results, it seems that 100% of people answered yes, to whether the plot made sense. One
person said that it was very clear and simple; three people said the narration helps tell
the story. These are good comments as it means younger children will easily understand
what is happening in my animation, especially because of the voiceovers.
3. When I asked the 10 people whether the voiceovers and music is suitable, all 10 of them
said that they were whilst. This is a good thing as it means that the volume and clarity is
very good and does not need any amendments.
4. Question 4 was where I asked if my animation is targeted correctly to the 5 - 11 year olds
age group. When looking at my results I found 10 out of 10 people thought that it did.
When I asked why, these are some of the responses I got:
Its suitable for boys and girls
The characters look friendly
Its simple but effective
Its got suitable characters
Its easy to understand
Children often dance at a young age
5. For question 5 I asked if my animation is professional for use in the BBC and the response
was that 100% of people said that it was. This means that it is likely that the animation
will be shown on the BBC, according to my peers.

Effectiveness:
Extent to what the brief has been realised
The client gave me details for making my graphics including the name of the band, the
material which I need to make, the number of graphics I will need to produce and the
essential information I need to include. I made sure that my graphics had the logo used
throughout and the quality was of a good standard. The brief also asked me to produce 3
graphics that promote and advertise The Pixels band.
Use of appropriate methods and techniques
When creating my graphics, I had to use various techniques and skills in the process. I have
wrote about all the tools I have used in my creation diary and then given evidence of those
in my checklist with a screenshot. In my diary is where every step that I went through is
explained with screenshot evidence. I used various different tools throughout the process
and below are only a couple which I have used the most on each of my graphics. I also
made sure when using these tools that I kept a level of professionalism throughout.
In the process of making my graphics there were many tools/techniques that I used
include the magic wand tool that allowed me to highlight certain areas and remove
them. I mostly used this tool to get rid of the white backgrounds from my internet images. A
technique that I used a lot through out the production of my graphics is the layer/blending
effects where I could put a pattern overlay over text. I used another blending option called
stroke which allowed me to outline text. There is a couple of common tools I used in
Photoshop to make my graphics and these were things like the text tool, eraser/paintbrush
Victoria Holt
and line tool. The line tool allowed me to create a spine on my back cover CD graphic.
Another tool that I used was the rectangle marquee tool to highlight an area and then
remove it without deleting the whole graphic itself.
Level of professionalism achieved
When it comes to making my graphics look professional I have added extra effects to make
some of the text stand out more than others to catch the readers attention. I had to make
sure my graphics looked consistent and professional throughout so that my work
maintained a high standard. As I did a couple of quick drafts beforehand it allowed me to
get on quicker with the finalised versions of my graphics, which is another way how I kept a
level of professionalism. I think I created my graphics in a professional manner and used a
variety of skills to show that. If I wanted to make them more professional I would use a
more limited colour scheme so its not all multi-coloured. I also worked in a professional way
which meant that if I missed a session and was behind I could easily catch up in my own
time.

When I talked to the client to discuss my ideas for my TV ident in unit 32, I created a log in a
client liaison diary. The diary evidence above shows the times and details of what I had
talked to the client about.

Pre-production phases
In terms of the pre-production stages for unit 54 I used a mixture of both a proposal and
storyboards to show and explain how my finished graphics would look for the pixels. On the
storyboards there was brief details linked to the sketches whereas the proposal went
through my ideas for colour scheme, design etc in detail. In the section of my evaluation
below it talks about some pre production I did.

Below you can see the storyboards and a couple of sections from the proposal I put
together as park of the planning for my graphics:
Victoria Holt
Production phases
As part of the production phase for unit 54 I made my graphics along with a diary to show
what I did at each stage when creating my graphics in Photoshop. For the production stage
of this unit I had to make 3 graphics including a logo, cd cover and A3 poster.
16/03/17 Session 1
Aim: Login and check emails, save my ILP and use Moodle. I will then begin to create my
graphics on Photoshop and fill in a diary and checklist.
Evidence: First of all I will create some folders for each of my Graphics. In these folders is
where I will keep the different versions of the graphics as well as any individual assets that
make up the images. I will then start to save images from the
internet.
Firstly I am going to create my logo, Ill start of by collecting some images that I need from
the Internet. To find these images I simply typed in pixels logo. I decided to use the image
below without the black background and I will change the colour of each letter so that it is
multi-coloured. I have also looked up band pixel images and found a guitar image I will use
on a slant position on top of my pixel word image. Altogether I will have three items that
make up my logo. Plus, two extra images of pixels for the reflection part and overlay. I have
changed my idea slightly from my storyboard, as the falling pixels under the word are now a
reflection of the word pixels.
Victoria Holt
I will open Photoshop and open up the image, because I screenshotted the image I firstly
had to crop it down. I then dragged and dropped the cropped image on my logo canvas. I
will then use the magic wand tool to remove the background colour whilst removing the
pixel squares at the bottom of the word, at the same time.
I then used the paint bucket, paintbrush and eraser to change the colour of the letters. This
was harder than I originally thought I would be because the bucket only coloured each little
square at once. I then used the paintbrush to go over any little gaps on the letters, which I
missed. I used the eye dropper tool to click on the colour that I wanted with the paint brush
Victoria Holt
Post-production phases
As part of the post-production phase for unit 34 I made an evaluation so that I could look
through my work to see what went well and what didnt. I then had to see whether it met
the brief and if they looked professional, as well as talking about the content, genre,
narration etc.
Genre
This is something, which I did not really consider, as it was not a necessary requirement for
the client. If I were to give my animation a genre it would probably be educational or
entertainment. I would say that my animation is educational as it teaches children age 5-11
years old how to stay healthy and what is good and bad for you. They are more likely to
watch it if they enjoy it and easily understand what is going on. I gave my animation a boring
but simple name, which tells the viewer exactly what my animation is about. I think the use
of the upbeat and popular sound clips add to the genre and entertainment as it will interact
with the younger generation well. As my animation has a purpose as well as entertainment
to it, children are more likely to want to watch it.
Victoria Holt
Content
The finished animation content resembles my original idea as it continues the dance class
theme and has all the correct scenes, which were marked on my storyboards. A couple of
the scenes were tweaked towards the end because I had to add another boy character into
the storyline. This meant that instead of the planned scenes 3 + 4. What
actually happened was the boy came on stage and talked about what is
good and what is bad about what you eat. Throughout my animation,
the characters stop moving a few times, as I had a few technical
difficulties with getting their legs to move throughout. At a couple of
points, the arms of the dancer do not move how I wanted. At the end of
my animation I re-added the music back again instead of just having
dialogue and silence. At the end of the conversation between the girl and boy there is a big
gap between the dialogue and music, as I could not fix this problem however, it does not
sound too bad. Other than these slight problems, I followed my dope sheets to match my
original intentions and I am very happy with how it turned out. From my dope sheets
details, I changed the background music so that it was slightly quieter than what were I had
intended, this is so you could hear the voiceovers clearer.
As I began to put my animation together I realised I was spreading the movements out too
much over more frames than I planned for each scene. I had to do this, as there would not
be enough frames by the end of my animation. Towards the end, there is a couple of
frames, which I would have changed in order to make the dancers arms move as well as the
legs. In general, the sound clips and voiceovers were placed in the right place and very
nicely synced with the movements on stage. The general content of my animation is the
same as what was written and drawn on my dope sheets.
Victoria Holt
For the post- production stage for unit 34 I had to do an animation and on the last
assignment I had to make a questionnaire and gather results to write up a statistical review.
you can see the questionnaire and report below.

Monitor
By monitoring my progress for both unit 34 and 54, it has allowed me to keep up to date
with the work loads and meet deadlines. I have used an ILP, given to me by the client to
monitor my progress as it set out all the tasks with plenty of time to complete everything. It
also allowed me to write session reviews about what I had done/finished at the end of each
lesson. Monitoring my work was important to make sure that I keep up to date and dont
fall behind.
my graphics more eye catching. As for my time management I think I stayed on task well
and met the deadlines in good time. For the production side I think I have improved my
skills and would happily make some more advertising graphics.
Conclusion from unit 34 statistical report:
In conclusion, I am happy with the results I gathered from my questionnaire as I got a high rating
for my animation and there were not many comments for improvement. I am also happy as
everyone thought that the animation meets the assignment criteria well. Everyone thinks that
my animation is suitable for the correct target audience. I am pleased with my product and from
the results, it is clear that my peers think so too.
