The Chief Ministers of India are the heads of their respective state governments.
There are Chief Ministers in India in every one of the twenty-nine states and even in
two Union Territories (Delhi and Puducherry).
Following elections to the state legislative assembly, the governor usually invites the
party (or coalition) with a majority of seats to form the government in the state. The
governor appoints the chief minister, whose council of ministers are collectively
responsible to the assembly.
