UNIT 5 WORKING TO A PROFESSIONAL BRIEF

EXAMPLE OF A REPORT FROM UNIT 78 IN MY EVIDENCE FOR UNIT 5 ASSIGNMENT
1

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------
INTRODUCTION TO TASK: For this task I will be looking at past work and looking
at the brief that has been set for me. Then I will say how I followed it and did the
work that had been set for me and the process of working though it.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------
Below is the 1st Brief I will evidence. Unit 78

This was my scenario:

Rockstar Games have accepted your presentation and have now interviewed you
and given you the position.
Your first task on joining the team is to provide your ideas for the SPRITE
GRAPHICS, CONCEPT ART and finally the GAME PACKAGING for a new game.
You can choose the same Game Design from Unit 72 as long as you can create
ORIGINAL graphics. Graphics CANNOT be downloaded and used unaltered they

1

must be your own creation but can be based upon a Franchised IP character,
suitable for your game.
OR
You can choose an entirely different Game and graphics to design and keep it
simple

The tasks that I needed to complete are as follows:

1. Read the scenario to enable you to understand the assignment
2. Create a Sources Document and keep up-to-date throughout this
assignment.
3. Produce a detailed proposal (computer game graphics) for your client
giving a thorough account in regards to your gaming idea. You could use your
work from Unit 72 Assignment 3 Treatment as a start point for this - just add any
extra range required OR produce a new Game Proposal for your new game idea.
Consider L & E. Working towards Four graphics.
4. Produce design Ideas for your game in terms of a compulsory Mind-map,
optional mood board and compulsory concept drawings. (graphics specification)
You need detailed designs/graphics for 1 character and 1 background (or Head
up Display), and two designs for print based graphics for your game these are
the DVD cover for the game and an A3 poster. (This could be based on your
designs for Unit 72; Computer Games Design or an entirely new game - choose
wisely). Four graphic designs sized accurately.

proposal as screen shots
Proposal- Generate a concept and ideas for computer game graphics
Computer Game Graphics and Proposal
Client needs
The client would like me to produce a detailed proposal and a computer game
graphic. In regards to my game idea, I can use work from my work in unit 72
assignment 3 treatment as a starting point for this and I can add any extra range
required or produce a new game proposal for my new game idea. I have to
consider Legal and Ethical implications and create four graphics.
Audience
The audience that is going to be playing my game is going to be 18 to 25 year
olds and the reason why I have picked this is because I feel they are the kind of
people that are going to be playing. I wont go any younger as the age that my
game is for is going to be 18+ and people who are younger shouldnt be playing
it. So the ages that I have said I feel are right because I feel that young adults
are going to be the right choice and at the age where they are in college or
university.

Genre
The game would fit into the action genre. The reason for this is because the
game is going to have a rather lot of guns, bad language and fighting in it so the
only one it can really fall into is an action. It is also a war game so that also
makes it more of an action game as the mission in the game is going to be you
shooting at people and running around fast.
Market Research
The audience in video games is very important because you want to make your
game fit in with the kinds of things that they are going to want to see. So you are
going to have to tailor to their liking. If you have been making a game series like
Call of Duty 1, 2 and 3, you are going to need to make sure that if the audience
like the first one and then the second one then you are going to have to keep to
those standards. You cant make a game and the first one people really like and
then completely change the one after that because you would be taking away
something that people really like and then making something that they possibly
dont like.

This is the work from my assignment. It shows that

I have understood the brief and was able to

Image of Sources Document

The evidence above proves that I have

understood the requirement of the
brief and was able to complete this
proposal for the client. I feel I have
met ALL of the clients requirements in
this proposal.

Time management
This is my ILP, I used it to stay on track and keep on time. I filled it in after every
lesson so I could see how much time I had left. It also helped me find out what I
had to do next as well and also what I did last lesson.

Below is the 2nd brief I will evidence from Unit 33

This is my proposal from Unit 33

This was my scenario:
The BBC are looking for young animators to join their large production team and
produce, at least, a 30 second pilot for a new pre-school childrens animated
programme. As part of the planning for this assignment you will be involved in
designing storyboards and a detailed dope sheet outlining what is required for a
successful animation and then you will further develop your storyboards, dope
sheets and detailed drawing of characters etc into a fully working product.

Or
1. Read the scenario to enable you to understand the assignment
2. Create a Sources Document and keep up-to-date throughout this
assignment.
3. Research Report - Research the web, television, DVDs etc for inspiration. In
particular you should be looking at Audiences and Generation of production ideas
4. Format Report - You should also research the use of possible formats that
will be used for your animation production.
5. Initial Ideas Report - You will now need to consider different ideas for your
own animation. Outline two different scenarios for your own animation. For each
idea you need to consider the use of possible formats, generation of production
ideas and consider your audience.
6. Chosen Animation and Proposal - You need to decide on the idea you will
takeforward to actually make into an animation. You need to fully explain why
you chose this idea and go into great detail on the generation of concepts and
audience considerations.
7. Planning detailed Storyboards and Dope Sheet - Now you have your
animation idea you now need to produce a storyboard for your main character or
characters taking into account any Planning and Documentation requirements. A
detailed Dope Sheet outlining the Scenes/Shots you assist your creation is also
required. Ensure you have enough footage/scenes for a 30 second animation
plus additional time for any opening and closing credits. Needs to be detailed.
8. Design - In preparation for your animation to begin, you need to design
storyboards/detailed drawings of supporting characters, props, background, base
design etc. Collect any resources you may need card, straws, wool etc.
Below is my first page in a readable form and then the rest of the
proposal as screen shots
Chosen animation and program Proposal
Subject
The subject for my animation is going to be about friendship. The reason that I
am going to be making it about friendship ship is because 5 is the game that you
are straining to make friends so it would help to find out what its like and how to
be someones friend. Friend ship is very impotent for little kids so showing them
this doesnt just make them happy but it helps the parents as well because they
know that their kids are leering to make friends
Characters
The characters that are going to be in my animation are going to be a big white
snow monster that is the main character. Second, one is going to be a ball that is
going to be annoying the big white monster the whole time. I feel that the kids
are really going to like the monster. the reason why is because I have based him
on a character from a well-known character sully off of monsters Inc. another

6
Josh Stroud

reason why I have diced to make him the way he is, is because I wanted to make
it a little bit like a slapstick
Visualisation
When I am trying to make my film, I will need to make it so that the film would
run smooth. On the other hand, I am going to be making the film with plastic so
that would mean that it would be a lot harder to make the film run smother. I
have got to take a lot of different shots and I can only let it move little bit at a
time and if something goes wrong and it then falls over then I will need to start
over again or get him in the same spot that he was in before he fell over. It will
be very time consuming to make this.
Awareness of technical limitations
I only have a limited stock of the plasticine so I will need to use it to the best way
that I can I will also have to make sure that I dont combined any colures as I
dont have that much of a stock of them so I need to use it wisely. When making
the background I will have the choice of whether I want to make my own
background. if I want to go and print one off if I was going to pint it I could make
it look however I want to make it look but if I was going to make it then it might
not look as good then say if I was going to print it off. Because I do not have the
skill of a great artist. However, if I was going to print one off then I would have a
good-looking background but it might not be the exact thing that I want.
Therefore, I will have to pic between them
The evidence above proves that I have understood the requirement of the brief
and was able to complete this proposal for the client. I feel I have met ALL of the
clients requirements in this proposal.
