Q-1 (9 Marks)

i) Is it possible to have a pressure drop for a liquid phase reaction, as is possible for a gas
phase reaction?

In liquid-phase reactions, concentration of reactants is insignificantly affected by even relatively

large changes in total pressure.
Consequently, we can totally ignore effect of pressure drop on rate of reaction when sizing
liquid-phase chemical reactors.

However, in gas-phase reactions, concentration of reacting species is proportional to total

pressure; consequently, proper accounting for the effects of pressure drop on reaction system can,
in many instances, be a key factor in success or failure of reactor operation.

ii) What is the Damkhler number?

iii) Fill in the blanks?

1
If rate law depends on more than one species, we must relate concentrations of different
species to each other. This relationship is most easily established with aid of a stoichiometric
table-. This table presents stoichiometric relationships between reacting molecules for a -
single reaction----. This stoichiometric table presents following information:
Column 1: particular species
Column 2: number of moles of each species initially present
Column 3: change in number of moles brought about by reaction
Column 4: number of moles remaining in system at time t

2
The gas phase reaction: A+B C+D

Is carried out isothermally at 227oC in a packed bed reactor with 100 kg of catalyst. The reaction
is 1st order in A and 1st order in B. The feed is equal molar in A and B and the flow is in the
turbulent regime with FA0= 10 mol/min and CA0= 0.25 mol/dm3. What would be the conversion?

Additional information: = 9.975x10-3 kg-1 , k = 13.47, For the turbulent flow = 0 , = 0
