ME 346: Heat Transfer

Summer 2017
Instructor: B. P. Puranik

Heat transfer is a core Mechanical Engineering Science subject that deals with the quantification
of rates of thermal energy transport due to temperature differences. ME 346 is a first level course
in this subject, with an objective of introducing the basic theory and the solution techniques that
the typical engineering applications require. All three modes of heat transfer, viz., Conduction,
Radiation and Convection will be introduced. The emphasis of the course will be on problem solv-
ing on representative situations that occur in engineering applications.

Several problems have been identified on each topic from A Textbook on Heat transfer
(Fourth Edition), S. P. Sukhatme, which will be the textbook for this course. Some of these,
and problems selected from other source(s) will be discussed in class from time to time. Students
can solve additional problems from the book on their own.

Grading:
The grade division will be as follows: Five tests (12% each) and the final examination (40%). Each
of the five tests will be held on Thursday of a week. The policy regarding open notes/open book,
etc. for the tests will be announced in class.

Books:
S P Sukhatme, A Textbook on Heat Transfer, Fourth Edition, Universities Press, 2005 (Text-
book for the course).

F P Incropera, D P DeWitt, T L Bergman, A S Lavine, Principles of Heat and Mass Transfer,

Seventh Edition, International Student Version, Wiley India, 2013.
