Thousands Attend Peoples Climate March

by Victoria Cohen - April 30, 2017

WASHINGTON - More than 200,000 people marched in protest against Donald Trumps envi-
ronmental agenda this Saturday. The Peoples Climate March, organized by a grassroots move-
ment, had the goal of raising awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and
urged the government to reform the policies put in place by President Trump.
The march started at 12:30pm, with protesters walking up Pennsylvania Avenue toward
the White House and ended at around 5:00pm with music, speeches, and art from contributors at
the Washington Monument.
The lineup included: Protectors of Justice, Creators of Sanctuary, Builders of Democracy,
Guardians of the Future, Defenders of Truth, Keepers of Faith, Reshapers of Power, and Many
Struggles One Home.

The heat of the day was an ironic symbol to complete the event, with the high being 90
degrees. Despite the scorching heat, protesters spirits were high. It is quiet hot out here, but it
only exemplifies what we are fighting against and helps our cause, one protester stated.
The protesters literally surrounded The White House chanting, Resistance is here to stay,
Welcome to your 100th day. The march was a peaceful, passionate gathering of people from all
parts of the United States and various socioeconomic backgrounds.
Many participants made signs with clever sayings or political satire focused on President
Trump. A majority of the protesters identified against Trump and his environmental policies, as
well as himself.
I believe that Donald Trump is one of, if not the, worst presidents this country has ever
seen," said one protester.

On the ground, signs lined the ceiling of the crowd, one reading, Walls dont work under wa-
ter.
The protest was not just about the environment, but also other current topics surrounding
Trumps presidency and current events; including LGBTQA issues, creation of job, and social
justice.
I am here, not only to fight protection of our planet but the protection of our civil
rights, one protester said.
The march caused a lot of traffic and road blocks, but this is nothing new for the commu-
nity who is very used to the inconveniences involved with living in the nations capital.
Many groups were involved in the march, musical groups and bands played their instru-
ments along the avenue while other protesters danced along.

It was not just everyday Americans that participate in this march, but attendees also in-
cluded Hollywood celebrities, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Kerry Washington, Jay Leto, and
Mark Ruffalo. They did not receive special treatment, instead just marched alongside their fellow

protesters. They even shared photos on social media to spread awareness of the cause and event.
The event is considered a huge success and the participants are happy at the support of
the community and big turn out for this important issue. Organizers are hopeful that through the
awareness raised by this event, citizen, companies, politicians and President Trump in particular,
will take a new stance on environmental policy and protection.
