nery equipment consists of four fixed M2 Qcaliher machine guns. two mounted in cach Ging, and an optical gun sight and an auxiliary ring- dibead gun sight. Provisions are made for 280 Eourds of ammunition for the outboard guns and F350 rounds for the inboard guns. The guns must be iged manually on the ground. All four guns fire miltancously and are electrically controlled by the mn firing switch on the control stick grip (see igure 245 ). Anmor plate protection is provided for He pilot (sew Figure 244) Guns The guns are so situated in the leading edge of the Frings that their fire passes outside of the propeller Boh guns occupy the adjacent ammunition compartment (see Figure 247). These compartments. jnely enclosed within the wing structure: Gun Sights 4. AUXILIARY GUN SIGHP—The auxiliary gun sight consists of an adjustable front bead sighit per- manently attached to the top of the firewall forward of the cockpit, and a rear ring sight which fits into a socket located on the windshield frame at the right of the rearview mirror. Stowage for the ring sight is under the right side of the instrament panel shield. 4 n Heaters ‘A Type 789-V Stewart-Wamer gun heater is installed in each gun compartment (see Figures 243, 248, and 252), The heaters are supplied with fuel-air mixture from the engine intake manifold through a system of metal pipes and synthetic hose. The fucl~ air mixture passes from the engine intake manifold to a solenoid-operated control valve mounted on the front side of the firewall. From the control valve the mixture is piped to a T fitting for distribution 10 h heater. . Armor Plate Protection ‘Armor plates protect the pilot azainst .30-caliber wunfire. Af protection is provided by two plates located behind the pilot's seat. One, 5/16 inch thick, extends from just below the bottom of the seat to a point level with the pilot's shoulders: the other, 7/16 inch thick, is attached to the top of this plate and affords protection (© the pilot's head. Forward pro- tection is provided by the 14 -inch armor plate firewall, the eng glass windshield. A’ 1/4 -inch armor plate is located immediately forward of the coolant tank on the forward end of the engine. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS of the image inereases as the switch is turned toward ON, 7.
